FLVPlayback skins with Captionate captioning support
Providing captions in Flash just got easier. Adobe is making skins for the FLVPlayback component available for use. The skins were crated by Michael Jordan and are being provided by Adobe for developers to use.
To use these skins:
- Download the caption skin MXP file
- Run the MXP file to install the extension
- once installed, you simply select a skin from the 'Select Skin' dialog that is displayed when changing the FLVPlayback skin in Flash 8, as shown in the image below.

- the FLV file that you display in your movie must have caption data to display. These skins are designed to work with FLV files that have captioned added by Captionate.
Please let us know how these skins work for you - we'd love to point to examples!
Update: We've uploaded a new version of the skins with the following issues addressed:
- The updated skins now support the FLVPlayback Custom UI Controls, with a CaptionsButton symbol to the FLVPlayback Custom UI.fla library.
- bug fixed where the skins cause the FLVPlayback component to throw an “Invalid contentPath” error when the FLVPlayback component instance appeared after the first frame of the swf and the contentPath url was set in the components panel.

Can't get these skin. IE and Safari both just give me a page with strange text characters. Any other link? Thanks

Great stuff, but we really really need a simple to use duration flag for captions and events so people can fwd and rwd clips and have the right data show up.
In the meantime I'd really like to know how to send external XML caption and event data to the caption area of this skin - so I can manually deal with fwd and rwd.
Thanks

When using this component the flv file path is hard coded into the swf. This means you can't have the path dynamically filled in by the html of the page that is displaying the flash.... or can you?
When you add flash video in Dreamweaver to a page using one of the standard components it uses a variable in the html called 'streamName' which allows you to change what video is being displayed. I was hoping for something similar.

Adonweb,
Are you uploading the skin swf file along with the main swf and flv file when you move the files to your web server? You'll need to if not...

Nike,
These skins do allow you to reference an external DFXP caption data file. Is that what you are looking for? If so, you'll find information in the Flash help system on this after the extension is installed.
