Adobe to Acquire Virtual Ubiquity
Posted by Tad Staley at 7:29 AM
We’ve got some exciting news to share today. At Adobe’s annual MAX conference this morning, it will be announced that Adobe Systems has signed a definitive agreement to acquire Virtual Ubiquity. The acquisition is expected to close by the end of the year.
What does this mean for you?
In the short run, it actually doesn’t change much. You will access Buzzword and your documents as you always have, though we now have a cool alternative (described below). Longer term, we’ll certainly be looking to take advantage of the Adobe products and platform. but for the remainder of this year we’re going to continue fleshing out our features, listening to your feedback and making sure we’re on the right track.
What does this mean for us?
We’ve been having a lot of fun re-visioning word processing on a new platform. And we benefited from being a small, nimble, self-directed entity to get our vision off the ground. However, we also recognize that in order to tackle this crowded and chaotic new market, we need to work with an established software firm to get the kind of stability and market exposure needed to effectively launch Buzzword.
Adobe was an obvious choice - not only because we built Buzzword on their great Flash platform, but because Buzzword fits so well into the Adobe heritage, which is all about great design and documents that matter. We think we can truly make a difference with Adobe, and help them in a variety of ways. Adobe has some exciting plans for the future, and Buzzword is poised to play an important role in their increasing presence in the area of web applications and collaboration. For more information on the acquisition, check the Adobe site to view the press release and the FAQ.
Buzzword.com
Coincident with this announcement, but not really related to the acquisition, we have also secured the use of the domain name buzzword.com. The current address will continue to work, but we’re delighted to now have rights to our own name on the web. As of this morning, if you go to buzzword.com, you’ll go to the same Buzzword site as if you had used the old name.
Spread the Word!
This announcement certainly signals a long and prosperous future for Buzzword. Now that Buzzword is becoming part of the Adobe family, you can be even more confident of the security and reliability of your documents over the long haul. If you have friends and collaborators with whom you want to work on documents, send them to buzzword.com. As mentioned in a previous blog post, we’ve opened up our new account process so anyone interested will be able to get an account.
Thanks
Above all, thanks to all of you for your great support and goodwill throughout these past several months. We have enjoyed - and intend to continue - the productive and good-natured dialog we’ve developed with you via email or on our forum.
