Buzzword: Looking Ahead
Posted by Lisa Underkoffler at 7:31 AM
ᅠThe Web is a wonderful place; it never stops. Buzzword continues to do frequent releases. The challenge is to keep up with the many and varied requests we receive. The team truly likes to hear from our users - your comments and ideas keep us focused on what's important and give us new points of view.
ᅠ
Buzzword has come a long way since we first launched the Preview. And there's still a lot we want to do. Here's a look at some of the features that are on the drawing board - some are ideas that came from many of you (thank you!)
ᅠ
More writing tools:
* As one user wrote to us, "Named styles, named styles, named styles." This is one of the most frequently requested features and it is high on our enhancement list
* Tools to track changes made by each co-author
* Justified text, in addition to left, right and centered text
* Import and export of Open Document format (ODT)
* More fonts (please see the posting on why there is a small number of fonts in Buzzword)
* Table enhancements - merged cells, more formatting options
ᅠ
Organizing your documents:
* Folders for grouping and organizing your documents
* Tagging documents for search
* Search within the organizerᅠ
And more:
* Spell check dictionaries for languages other than US English
* An off-line version of Buzzword
* and many, many more smaller enhancements
ᅠ
The Buzzword team has been releasing new features on a regular basis since our debut last summer. Our users get the benefit of new functionality as it's ready. Each time you sign in to Buzzword, the latest and greatest is there - no installations, no upgrades, it just works.ᅠ
Please, keep the dialog going. Tell us what you need and what you think would make Buzzword a better solution for your work. The Buzzword forum is open!

Yes, that would be brilliant!
Also, what about exporting of .doc format? So I could email such files to those who need to who would find that easier (i.e. because they are 'afraid' of new things) than opening this site?

Silly me - for some reason I didn't see it in the export list the first time!

Me again. Yes I know. You should merge them.
Columns would be a great feature, as I personally use them a lot on 'offlline' editors like Word.

May of us who live in the world of print cataloging world and who are now working with Adobe Scene7 embrace the notion of color correctness via Flex running in Flash.
color management seems to missing completely from Adobe Kuler - can Adobe Buzzword be made to 'simulate how it might print' without 1st saving as PDF, embedding an icc output intent profile - or if it does this, perhaps I am missing something ?

I'm so glad "named styles" are high on your list. That is certainly my biggest wishlist item for Buzzword. Once we have that, I am really looking forward to implementing a Buzzword-to-InDesign-and-InCopy workflow.

Styles are very important, obviously.
There is an opportunity here to not only define a user-extensible set of styles but to work out a standard style sheet that people can use in their offline word processors as well to give good interop with Buzzword.
Buzzword seems to have some good structural features as far as they go (where are the headings?) if you could map those onto styles on export then it would improve the chances of being able to interoperate with other word processors and make it easy for people to get in to Buzzword progressively. For example you could draft a paper with several authors then export to ODT-plus-styles and someone could add references using Zotero etc.
I have linked to an old post of mine where I tried to talk to Google about this issue: http://ptsefton.com/blog/2006/03/21/writely,__meet_the_ice_template/
One other nice feature would be an AtomPub client so you can push to a blog - and can you fix the HTML export please? It doesn't nest list elements correctly.

Ability to intercept errors in the runtime would be a great feature to bug the Flash Player team to implement in version 10. It's essential to the stability of Buzzword, actually, not to mention every other Flex application. Every so often I get a debugger dialog with a critical error -- my cursor disappears but Buzzword keeps on chugging, only now I can't see what I'm clicking! Yes, I'm a Flex developer, so I know the challenges you guys are facing -- I'm having them too! :) Please bug Adobe to fix FP-444. Thanks!
