Adobe has released its latest version of the PDF iFilter, version 9, that will work on 64 Bit Platforms. It is a free update that will give end users and administrators the ability to search and index PDF documents using Microsoft Indexing clients on 64-bit platforms. You can download it here. More after the break…
For those of you on 32-bit platforms, there is no need to look for an independent 32-bit PDF iFilter. The latest version of PDF iFilter 32–bit is always bundled with Acrobat and Reader and gets installed automatically with installation of any of the above software.
It has been tested for the following platforms and applications.
| Environment | Operating System | Application |
|---|---|---|
| Desktop | Windows XP x64 SP2 | * Windows Desktop Search 3 and 4 * Windows Indexing Service |
| Windows Vista x64 SP1 | * Windows Search 4 | |
| Server | Windows Server 2003 x64 Edition R2 SP2 | * Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 * Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 * Windows Desktop Search 3 |
| Windows Server 2008 x64 SP1 | * Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 * Microsoft SQL Server 2005 * Windows Search 4 |
We look forward to your feedback.

Aman,
What about preview handling as per Acrobat reader for Outlook and Windows Explorer on x64 systems? Does this update help?
thanks
s.
[Spence - No, this update is not related to preview handling. We still have work to do to get preview handling complete on x64 systems. If you have Reader 9 (or Acrobat 9) installed, you'll see previews on x64 systems in some cases (e.g. in Outlook on XP x64) and probably not in other cases (e.g. in Outlook or Win Explorer on Vista x64). It's something that we're still working on. Thanks - Dave]
good thing
Is there any support for Windows IA64Bit (Itanium). I see that there is a support for x64 but I couldn't find anything for IA64 support.
What is the solution for IA64 Windows?
Regards
Aman,
I've just purchased a new PC running Vista 64-bit. After installing the latest Adobe Reader (9.0), I was disappointed to see the error "Registered IFilter is not found" in Vista's indexing service for pdf and other Adobe files.
Note I tried a fresh install of Vista (formatted drive) followed by installing Adobe Reader 9.0 and the same "Registered IFilter is not found" error is there.
Then I found your blog!
This is good news - BUT, why isn't it simply bundled with Adobe Reader 9.0? There are a huge number of PCs out there running 64-bit OS's these days.
Also, can we simply install the 64-bit filter over the 32-bit filter that is installed automatically with Reader? Or do we need to manually unregister the 32-bit filter first?
Will future Adobe Reader updates break the 64-bit filter by again installing the 32-bit filter?
Thanks,
Steve
[Steve -
* We are hoping to bundle 64-bit iFilter with Reader and Acrobat in the future. However, in the interest of getting the plug-in into user's hands as quickly as possible, we decided to release it as a stand-alone plug-in in the short-term.
* On a 64-bit system, Reader 9's 32-iFilter should not have been registered. So you should be able to simply install 64-bit iFilter over 32-bit iFilter and it should work fine.

I just bought a new laptop that has Windows Vista instead of Windows XP. My laptop also runs on 64-bit my PC ran on 32-bit. I am trying to watch TV, look at videos and/or listen to music and I cannot do any of this. Everytime I try to download flash player/adobe and it says you cannot operate on a 64-bit. I mwould love to see something to help get your program working on my laptop. What do you suggest?
[Shannon - Sorry, you'll need to check with the Flash team. This is a different group than mine. - Dave]
What is this:
"After installing the PDF iFilter, it is recommended that you set your system PATH environment variable to the "bin" folder of the "Ifilter" installation."
Last time i modified the enviroment path to get a program to work was...hmm, maybe 1997? At least it wasn't this millenium, that's for sure.
And what do you mean with RECOMMENDED? Will it stop working if you don't do it or what exactly is the difference?
Overall it seems very unstable, i can find results in some of my documents but in others i don't find anything.
[Erik - We tried to contact you to get more info, but you left us an invalid email address. Regardless, you need to set ‘PATH’ environment variable to make it work with repositories like SQL server, SharePoint and Exchange server. iFilter with default windows indexing services like WDS works fine without setting this PATH. - Aman]
I am integrating the PDF IFilter with Sharepoint Server. I wanted to ask whether the IFilter also performs OCR of PDFs containing scanned documents and provides that as text to the Sharepoint indexing service?
Adobe Reader performs a decent OCR of a scanned document when I do a Select All and Copy.
[Jehanzep - No, PDF iFilter does not OCR. You'll need to do that separately with Acrobat or another tool. - Dave]
I'm trying to find the Standard Acrobat 9 software for my 64- bit platform computer. I currently do not have adobe on my computer. Help!!!!
Marsha
[Marsha - Acrobat 9, including Acrobat Standard, supports WinXP 64, WinVista 64 and Win2003 64. See
here for more details. - Dave]
What about the rest of Acrobat Reader? When will be ported to native 64 bit?
[Vic - Reader today supports 64-bit systems. - Dave]
This is good news - my only question comment is that it's a shame that the 32-bit standalone version is not available too - I would just like the ability to install the ifilter on its own without the need for acrobat to be installed as well. It the version 9 32 bit version available like this?
Also are there many differences between earlier ifilter versions and this one (namely 7)
Cheers
[iFilter 9 32-bit is included with Adobe Acrobat 9 and the free Adobe Reader 9. You automatically get iFilter 9 32-bit when you install Reader 9. Is there any specific reason why you would want it to be a separate installer?
iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms will enable searching within documents with PDF Version 1.7. Also it will enable searching within PDF Portfolios that were introduced in Acrobat 9. - Aman]
In your document "configuring_pdf_ifilter_for_ms_sharepoint_2007.pdf"
downloaded from http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4025 you navigate me in point 2.b. to path in registry:
\\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Office Server\12.0\Search\Applications\{site GUID}\Gather\Portal_Content\Extensions\ExtensionList
But on my SBS2008 no this path exist. There is not "Office Server" key, there is not "Portal_Content" to find in registry.
So I am not able to configure SharePoint to correctly search PDF files.
[Vladimir - You might try to do it via Search administration page for the server. In the same document, we have a note at the end of point no 2:
“Note: This can also be achieved via SharePoint Server Search Administration page by adding ‘pdf’ to list of File Types in Search Administration->File Types. This would automatically add an entry for ‘pdf’ filetype as mentioned above in step 1” - Aman]
Greetings,
I also have Vista x64 and can not preview pdf docs within explorer or outlook 2007. Please let me know if/when a fix is available.
I don't understand alot of what is written here. I have a Dell xps20 w/ Vista 64 and cannot load reader due to a %Appdata%\ not found error 1606 message. I would just like step by step to get reader installed and working on my pc. I have downloaded the ifilter - sorry if I seem dense, but this is really not my area of expertise so help would be greatly appreciated!
[Selene - It sounds like your question isn't really with iFilter. Instead it sounds like you're having issues installing Reader 9 on Vista 64. Your best bet would be to contact Adobe Support (if you or your company have an Adobe Support Contract) or to post your question on the Reader Forum.
It sounds like maybe your Application Data folder is in a non-standard location (like maybe a network drive) and therefore installation is failing. There are two additional articles here and here which are related to what you're talking about, but they're pretty technical and a lot depends on how your system is set up. I think it's easiest to turn to Support or the Forum. Good luck - Dave
Is the 64-bit IFilter affected by CVE-2009-0658 vulnerability? I've tried to search for info on this but have'nt found a single pice of information
Is version 9 of the iFilter written to use multi threading? Or still only one thread?
[iFilter 9 is not multi threaded. However it will run in a thread safe manner even on a multi threaded system so that multiple threads can access it simultaneously without any failure. It just won’t take advantage of multi threading itself. - Aman]
Does version 9 support MSSQL 2008 64-bit and Windows SQL Server 64-bit? Thanks.
[iFilter 9 for 64-bit platforms has been tested with MS SQL Server 2005. Ideally, it should work with MS SQL Server 2008, but we haven’t tested with it. - Aman]
how do I fix
error 1606. could not access network location % APPDATA%.\.
[Terri - Does this have to do with iFilter or Acrobat/Reader? See my answer to Selene's question above. - Dave]
Hello,
Do you have to install Acrobat 9 on the server to utilize the 64-bit PDF Ifilter? Or is it completely a standalone install similar to IFilter 6.0?
[Julian - It's a completely stand-alone install. - Dave]
error 1606. could not access network location % APPDATA%.\.
Reader worked fine one day and got this message the next. I tried to upgrade to 8.1 but still get the same message. Tried to uninstall and I get the same. Any ideas> How/where do I check paths, pointers, etc for properties or register?
[Rhonda - See my answer to Selene's question above. - Dave]
Do you happen to have any instructions for installing the 32bit ifilter (included in Reader v9) for Windows SharePoint Service v3.0? Microsoft has a doc that references this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927675 but it's not updated for v9 of the reader with ifilter built in. I tried these steps with the latest version yet the contents of my PDFs are not indext properly on SharePoint
Does PDF iFilter 9 for 64-bit multi-threaded?
[Julian - This question was answered above. See Martin's March 26 post and Aman's reply. - Dave]
What is error 1606? I'm trying to install Adobe on my new Toshiba laptop but it won't let me complete the install. It gets to the end and then says error 1606. Can you help me?
Bug: After installing this IFilter, Adobe Reader is set as default PDF-reader.
I have installed the 64-bit pdf ifilter. I verified that the file type has been added correctly. But I still cannot index pdf files. Does the server need to be restarted to complete the installation?
If we want to install ifilter on Server 2003, we don't really need adobe reader for anything.
when installing adobe reader on server 03, will the indexing service automatically use the new version of ifilter if we already have version 6 running for that?
The reason I'd like a stand-alone installer for the 32-bit IFilter is so I can install it on a Sharepoint server without having to install Reader or another large application that isn't necessary.
Just recently when I try to go to certain website, I get a message saying that adobe 8.1 is not working and then I recieve "error 1606. Could not access network location %APPDATA%\" message. What can I do to resolve this problem?
[Jason - See my answer to Selene's question above. - Dave]
when i start download flash player in my laptop using the install_flash player it's can't completely....an i receive "error opening file for writing:
c:window/system32/macromed/flash/NPSWFS32.dll"
an came with 3 choices (abort, retry and ignore)..
what should i do???why the error appear???.
[Ali - Please see the Flash Support information on Adobe.Com. This is a different group then my Acrobat group. - Dave]
How is the licensing policy of this utility? Can it be installed in customer machine as part of our product installation?
[Mohammad - If you want to redistribute and install iFilter with your product, you need to sign a short Adobe distribution agreement. I'll have someone contact you. Thanks! - Dave]
Thanks for the comments Dave. I have not got any information further on the Adobe distribution agreement from your team. Can you ask someone to get in touch with me at the earliest?
How about the costing for the redistribution? Is it freely redistributable with the agreement or is there some costing for the same?
I have installed Adobe 9 and can now preview PDF attachments in Outlook 2007. Should I also be able to search the attachments if I have created "searchable" PDF files? I have created several PDF files with my scanner using both the "searchable" and "non-searchable" option, but neither attachment shows up during an Outlook search. DOC, PPT, and XLS attachments show up just fine.
[John - To confirm if your PDF is searchable, use "Find" in Acrobat. If Acrobat can find a word, then it's searchable. However, if you want Windows or Outlook to search PDF files, like they can search Office files, you'll need to make sure that you have the PDF iFilter plug-in installed. On 32-bit Windows, it's installed automatically with Reader/Acrobat 9. On 64-bit Windows, you'll need to download it for free from Adobe here. If you need more help, please contact Acrobat Support here. You can post in the Forum (see lower-right corner of page) or contact Support (see upper-right corner of page). - Dave]
ERROR1606.Could not access network location%APPDATA%\.yeah people have this problem for better than a year so how about fixin' it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi, I have Vista 32 bit laptop... I was trying to install my new Wireless HP printer and I get this message:
Error 1606 could not access network location %APPDATA%
Is there an authoritative guide to what security and copy protection settings will and will not work with MOSS 2007 search and .pdf IFilters?
It seems that there are very many common references about the fact that IFilters exist of varying quality re: the installation and that they allow the parsing of .pdf documents in general but no clear definition of what content creators and publishers of documents can and cannot do for securing the document and still allowing a consistently searchable state including correct settings based on version of the Adobe product.
Thanks in advance - as you may be able to tell we are getting inconsistent results in search with secured .pdf's with both correctly installed 32 bit and 64 bit Ifilters on separate MOSS farms. I am hoping to find a 'These settings within a document's properties will work, these settings will not' type of answer that will make the search of .pdf's predictable with properly installed and configured current IFilters. (password security? certificate security? Acrobat Version?, etc. and granular settings under that which will secure a document for public consuption and allow successful predictable MOSS Search results.)
[Ed - I'm not exactly sure what result you're trying to achieve. It sounds like you want access to the document to be restricted, but you want MOSS Search to be able to search the entire contents of the document. This seems contradictory to me, but I'm probably not understanding your use case completely.
I *believe* (although I'll see if another team member wants to add more details) that the Adobe PDF iFilter respects the security settings that the document author sets in Advanced > Security > Encrypt with Password. So if the document author specifies that text can be copied from the document, PDF iFilter can extract text from that document. If the document author specifies that text cannot be copied from the document, PDF iFilter cannot extract text from that document. If the document author has specified an Open Password for the document, then by definition PDF iFilter cannot extract text from this document. Extracting out metadata is different and can also be specified in this same Encrypt dialog. I'll see if anyone else can add some more color to this or provide any links/references. - Dave]
[Ed - I got the following update from the iFilter Team - Dave
1. If the security policy of a PDF document doesn’t allow text to be copied/extracted, then we abide by that and iFilter doesn’t extract text from the document.
2. Text will not be extracted if a document has either Open password set or permission password set to restrict text copying.
3. However, metadata is always searchable irrespective of whether document permissions allow metadata extraction or not. There is a bug logged for this issue.]
I keep getting an error message...Error 1606 Could not access local network. What does this mean? And I can not get any of my pdf files open at all. My Adobe 8.1 stopped working and I tried to reinstall it and it does not work, someone help me please!
[Regina - See my answer to Selene's question above. - Dave]
Hi,
can anyone please tell if Adobe IFilter 9.0 support searches for metadata xmp of PDF?
[Manasi - Yes, it does. - Dave]
Hi
I am not able to full-text index PDF documents.
Configuration:
Windows Server 2008 x64 SP1
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007
Microsoft SQL Server 2008
I have followed all the steps and still no results.
Any idea what can cause this? No errors reported in the logs.
Hi,
Will Adobe IFilter 9.0 also support indexing and searching of PDFs of next versions that may be released ahead?
Require this information urgently..
Thanks in advance..
Manasi
Hi Dave,
Thanks for your reply. I needed more clarification on searches for xmp metadata support by Adobe IFilter 9.0. As far as I know, Adobe IFilter doesn't support xmp metadata searches. That's why we need to go for vendors like IFilterShop and PDFlib. Does Adobe IFilter 9.0 have this new feature of xmp? Can you provide me with some reference links?
Thanks in advance...Awaiting your reply
Manasi
[Mansai,
I checked with the PDF iFilter team. Here's some more clarification:
1. You asked: "Will Adobe IFilter 9.0 also support indexing and searching of PDFs of next versions that may be released ahead?" They answered: "PDF iFilter 9 will still be able to extract text from a next version PDF, but the newly added features in future versions won’t be supported by earlier version of iFilter."
2. You asked: "I needed more clarification on searches for xmp metadata support by Adobe IFilter 9.0." They answered: "iFIlter 9 (both 32 & 64 bit) does not support XMP metadata. It's something we're considering for the future." Turns out, I was wrong about this one.
Thanks.
Dave]
Refer below link for steps..
have not tried yet but do give it a chance :-)

Hi,
Even I am unable to do full text search on PDFs after installing Adobe Reader 9.0 ( having IFilter 9.0) and also have configured it with WSS 3.0. Any idea, why is this happening? Please guide for resolution.
thanx..
Thanks a lot Dave. Then another question arises that if Adobe IFilter 9.0 wont support added features in future, then will Adobe provide any kind of support policy regarding this? Will Adobe provide any facility to migrate IFilter 9.0 to next versions?
Thanks in advance..
[Manasi - If new "content types" are added to PDF, and if the current PDF iFilter can't index these new content types, then we would consider supporting these new content types in a future release of PDF iFilter. - Dave]
Hi
I am also not able to full-text index PDF documents.
Windows Server 2008 x64 SP1
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007
Microsoft SQL Server 2008
No errors reported in the logs.
Thanks for any help,
Pete
I cannot change or add any thing to my computer because of this error: Error 1606. Could not access network location APPDATA%\. I have searched it out and tried what has been suggested, but nothing has worked. Will you please take the time to give me step by step istructions so I can fix this problem. I am disabled and sit home all the time and this computer helps pass the time. I do most of my buying over the internet too and this problem hinders me.
Thanking you in advance for our cooperation concerning this hateful problem.

Hello:
I am having a problem with 1606 as well and like Ms Sandy am very fustrated because this problem will not let me downoload anything and will not let me get all of my updates that are recommemded to be updated when the time comes. I have tried to update the 9.0 version of adobe reader and have been unsucessful with that as well. The problem is still there I have tried to uninstall the 8.1.2 version of the reader and cannot uninstall it either. I am having a very hard time trying to find any answers. Do I have a virus problem? I am still learning how to use my computer for more things except ordering merchandise. Can you please help me?!
[Emma - Please see my comments to Selene above on March 6, 2009. - Dave]
Dear Dave, I have read all these threads and your answers, especially the one to Selena with all the other links, and I still CAN NOT load in Adobe 9. I have Vista 32 bit system that successfully has loaded Adobe 8 and Microsoft office. I understand from the threads that Adobe 9, with a Vista 32 bit system, does NOT need additional filter downloads, SO WHY CAN I NOT LOAD THIS IN. I get the Error message 1606 could not access network location %APPDATA%. It seems to me to be ADOBE'S PROBLEM and not a problem with my registry or else I would have had the same problem with Adobe 8. Why can't we get a straight answer. Now I can't even use Adobe 8 because it will take me to the page that says I can download a more current version. Please get your internal problems resolved and help out the rest of us. I await your response.
[Janet - I'm not an expert in this area. But my understanding is that this issue appears sporadically on some machines, given other external factors. I think your best bet is to contact Adobe Support, so they can gather all the appropriate details about your machine and offer the best solution. - Dave]
When will Adobe come out with a PDF IFilter for 64-bit machines that will be multi-threaded? I have a large number of PDF's that I index with Microsoft Indexing Service, and I find this iFilter to be quite slow. Notice the comparison posted on MSDN:
http://blogs.msdn.com/opal/archive/2009/03/10/pdf-ifilter-battle-second-round.aspx
I would even be willing to pay for one, since I am already considering purchasing an alternative...
Thanks
I am trying to setup the ifilter on the following; win 2008 server enterprise edition, sql server 2008 express edition, windows indexing service. i have installed the reader 9.0 with no success. what is the recommended install for my setup? is it simply install reader 9? what needs to be present in the registry? exactly which folder with the reader install should i point my path var? i can't find the bin dir for the reader install. lots of questions, please help?
I've seen nothing about redistribution of the Adobe IFilter anywhere except the question Mohammad asked above. Where can I go to learn about redistributing the Adobe IFilter so my product can index PDFs without using a larger library like PDFBox?
[Mcaden - I'll have someone contact you about distribution. - Dave]
Not working for me either. The Adobe iFilter is not nearly as stable as the Foxit 64-bit iFilter.
We have not been able to search PDFs for years, ever since we upgraded to a 64-bit system.
SQL Server and sharepoint should ship with this functionality built-in otherwise just move on to the XPS format! Goodbye PDF, good riddens with the silly PDF format.
I am way too frustrated after messing with this for so many years. It is easier to just write off adobe all together.
Well, Since Adobe is side-stepping the issue of no thumbnails in 64bit windows, when everyone can easily see that the preview handler is not registering correctly (which is an Adobe problem, not WINDOWS), then i guess everyone will have to stop using Acrobat, and find a better alternative. After all, everyone else is moving to 64bit, and there are a lot of GOOD alternatives.
Error 1606 could not access network location %appdata%\. What is this error? How do I correct it as is being identified as a internal problem. have installed adobe PDL iFilter 9 shredder? unable to download internet from sites for my job.(Vista Home Premium)
Is there any support for Windows IA64Bit (Itanium)?
We have tested iFilter only on platforms mentioned in the blog above. This platform was not tested.
-Aman
Running Windows 2008 R2 with the ifilter 9 64bit. Since installing and indexing, we are seeing a bunch of temp folders on the root of the drive we're indexing folders on. These temp folders start with A9R (ie A9R944-9ad9e2) and each contain a single pdf file (some duplicates of other folders). Any ideas on why this would happen?
