Remember the "good" old days when you used to get your news from dead trees? The news print rubbing off on your fingers. The little pile of rubber bands which you’d collect over the weeks. Thank goodness for the "interweb" thingy. Now I can fire up my RSS reader (I’m a big fan of Newsgator since I can log in from any browser and see a consistent record of which articles I have and haven’t read) and the news comes pouring in. But that begs the question "Where is the best Acrobat news hiding?" (Besides, of course, your trusty Shredding The Document home for all things Acrobat.) More after the break…

I thought it would be fun to start to accumulate a list of Acrobat and PDF focused blogs which are doing good works. I’ve focused currently on non-Adobe blogs, although there a bunch created by my Acrobat colleagues (like Rick, Joel, Ali, Lori, Stephen and all the folks at AcrobatUsers.Com) which are definitely worth following.

Anyways, here’s a few to get you started:

AcroFacts by Donna Baker. Authoress of "Acrobat How-Tos", "Acrobat in the Office" and numerous other Acro-centric publications.

4xPDF by Rowan and Karl. Rowan and Karl have been doing PDF and document solutions for some time and there’s some good content here. One recent post of note is their well-thought out piece on Adobe Reader.

Planet PDF and PDFZone – OK, not blogs per se. But still good sources of info about PDF related products, services and news.

Which are your favorites? Where do you go for news and information about Acrobat and PDF?

Please leave us a comment and share your favorite links.

Thanks!

"Adobe Reinvents Digital Docs" – Edward F. Moltzen of CRN wrote a nice review of Acrobat 9. The article concludes with the following: "Acrobat 9 Pro could possibly be the single, most powerful product that’s ever been delivered in the world’s efforts to take the office digital…The Test Center seldom gives five stars for technical merit to any product, but Acrobat 9 Pro is one that deserves it.”

"Adobe Acrobat 9 brings multimedia to PDFs" – Paul Lima at Six-Figure Freelancer Blog posted a review of Acrobat 9 focusing on our new support for Flash video and our introduction of PDF Portfolios.

"Hands on with Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended: The ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of High-Tech 3-D Collaboration" – David Heller at MCADCafé provided a review which covered PDF Portfolios, 3D and Flash, Adobe Presenter, and collaborating via Acrobat.Com. MCADCafe is targeted at technical markets like users of MCAD (mechanical computer-aided design) software.

"Product Review by GP Solo Magazine" – David Masters and Jeffrey Allen each review the Windows and Mac version (respectively) of Acrobat, with a particular focus on the legal market.
What other good Acrobat articles have you found recently?

Thanks,

A few new collections of PDF Portfolios were posted recently on Acrobatusers.com and Adobe.com. The first is a gallery of business oriented portfolios and the second is a set of casual games for both kids and grownups. More after the break…

The business oriented portfolios demonstrate some creative branding and presentation, but the games are more appropriate for this time of year. (full disclosure: This post took longer to write than it should have. I felt the need to experience some of the games before writing about them). Because they all play offline inside Adobe Reader 9, the games are excellent for those times during the holidays when you’re looking for a distraction and find yourself without an Internet connection.

Here are just a few scenarios you might find yourself in this holiday season where entertainment like this could be helpful:

You just made it through security in time to find out your flight is 2 hours delayed

You discover the in-flight entertainment is back to back episodes of Charles in Charge and you’re stuck in the middle seat

You’re 4 hours from grandma’s and the kids have been asking if you’re there yet for the last 2

It’s in between the gifts and the meals when you realize Uncle Charlie’s dialup connection isn’t going to cut it

Enjoy and Happy Holidays from all of us on the Acrobat team!!

Chris French
Acrobat Product Manager

Hint: Right click on any of the games while they’re running and choose “Full Screen Multimedia” to get the full effect.

Adobe has released its latest version of the PDF iFilter, version 9, that will work on 64 Bit Platforms. It is a free update that will give end users and administrators the ability to search and index PDF documents using Microsoft Indexing clients on 64-bit platforms. You can download it here. More after the break…

For those of you on 32-bit platforms, there is no need to look for an independent 32-bit PDF iFilter. The latest version of PDF iFilter 32–bit is always bundled with Acrobat and Reader and gets installed automatically with installation of any of the above software.

It has been tested for the following platforms and applications.
