I was recently asked this question, "Tim, You showed us that you didn't need AutoCAD on your computer to get 2D DWG files into Acrobat 8 Professional, but what about AutoCAD 3D models into Acrobat 3D version 8?" Well, you are in luck, just like Just like Beckham at a Spice Girls Concert! We got you covered here, just sit back relax and let your ol’ buddy Tim kicks this one out for you.

I get asked this question alot, and I have to say it is very easy to get your Revit models into Acrobat 3D version 8. The question you have to ask yourself; do I need the BIM data, or is this just for review and mark up! Whoa, Tim, now you’re getting technical on us! Well, just sit back relax and let your ol’ buddy Tim step you through the process.

I was at one of the largest oil field tool provider today and things were going pretty good. We where discussing Acrobat 8 Professional, Acrobat 3D Version 8 and a little LiveCycle Policy Server, when a one of the ladies from the document group asked what I thought was a very simple questions…..How do you change the text style in a Text Box? Well I piped up and said…..

Hello all, on this page you will find videos of the tips and tricks and demos shown in this blog. Select to see more on the videos.
How many times have you gotten a DWG file from some where and needed to view, collaborate, mark up, or print it and didn't have AutoCAD or a proprietary viewer du jour to do it with. Well Acrobat 8 Professional and Acrobat 3D version 8 handles that for you by creating a feature rich PDF without having AutoCAD on your system.

You're probably saying to yourself; "ok Tim, you've gone off the deep end on this one. Eating your own dog food and being green go together in many ways, but for Acrobat in the AEC and EPC community, it's not totally obvious." I love it when I get to mess with you all a little. But this will become so apparent after I explain.

Hey all, are you in the Washington DC area? Come by and see me (Tim Huff) and Jonathan Bowman at the FIATECH Tech Conf.

What is FIATECH? Well it is "The Power of Collaboration!" or put into words it is... "FIATECH provides the focus needed to leapfrog ahead with practical new technologies to support FIAPP (Fully Integrated and Automated Project Processes). As a non-profit research, development and deployment (RD&D) consortium, FIATECH offers the collaborative vehicle to fully maximize expertise, attract and leverage scarce RD&D dollars, and reduce risks."
Why is Adobe at FIATECH? That's easy, we want to support the workflows that you all are dealing with. Being members of FIATECH, CII, and others will not only help you by getting more industry specific information into PDF files, but help us be part of the standard creation and there fore be at the fore frount of the spec delivery. Yes that is all marketing speak for "I really dig getting PDF in these workflows and love to geek out on new standards." I admit it, I love to be on the cutting edge, I'm a bleeding edge junkie! Stay tuned for reports from me and Jonathan (See his blog here) on FIATECH.

Sorry, but, I get asked this question almost every day! How do I create a custom stamp in Acrobat 8 Professional or Acrobat 3D Version 8?
How do I add my user name and date like in the standard stamps in Acrobat, or better put, How do I create a custom dynamic stamp.
Well, that is the million dollar question today. I was recently at one of the largest EPC firms and that question came up in every group I talked to. I feel your pain, and understand, this is a feature that we need to add to Acrobat 8 Professional and Acrobat 3d version 8 (Hopefully we can get it spec’d for Acrobat 9).
Hello all, I wanted to introduce you to a new webinar series I am doing called called Adobe Acrobat for AEC / EPC Online eSeminar Series. BIM and 3D How, Who, Are ya, or will ya?
Ok so that is a strange bit to start off with but, I was just sitting here watching a little FA Cup British Soccer with my kids and I just starting to wonder about BIM, IFC, 3D...Being a Mechanical Engineer, my work history has been 100% 3D, I see no benefit to 2D design and drafting. But I drank the 3D kool-aid in College in the early 80's using Bosch and Lomb 2D and 3D wireframe design as I did my summer internships at a large HVAC manufacture. I've used or deisgned almost every 3D Design package on the planet. Let me see; Bosch and Lomb, CADDS, Pro-E, Medusa, Think3, 3Di, IronCAD, AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop, Architectural Desktop, Inventor (I was product manager for Inventor for some years), SolidWorks (I was the field marketing manger for a few years there as well), Catia, UGS, SolidEdge, Alibre, I even wrote my own 3D Parametric modeler on the ACIS kernel for fun. So I feel that 3D is the best way to design and help eliminate errors. Our industry is just getting rolling into 3D, and along for the ride comes a few standards like BIM. I want to throw this out to you.
1-Are you using a 3D system and if so what and why>
2-Are you using a standard like BIM and why?
3-How do you see BIM and other standards moving forward?
I'm asking this because we are starting to look at Acrobat 9 and I would like to see where your heads are in respect to these areas.
Whelp, that's it for today, I guess I'll get the boys and go to the park and kick the ball around a bit.

Steps to adjust Acrobat Line Merge settings for PDF creation from AutoCAD
I've was recently reading on a few competitors web sites that Acrobat can not do Lines Merge and Lines Overwrite when publishing PDF from AutoCAD. Well this is false and we've put together step by step instructions on how this setting can be adjusted for PDF being created from AutoCAD using Acrobat 8 Professional, there is a link to a sample DWG file and the resulting variations in PDF output depending on what setting is chosen (Lines Merge or Lines Overwrite). This isn't currently documented as part of the Acrobat 8 Pro help files, so we're providing this a tip and trick for all of you out there, enjoy.
Read on for the instructions.
