Acroread

2D GPU acceleration would be nice to have (using OpenGL->GLX) because sometimes pdf pages with Commenting and Drawing Markup baloon boxes are scrolling very sloooow. Especially there where are plenty of them on one page.
In such situations I can sometimes loose control over scrolling up down and computer scrolls many pages far away I want. Stopping it is impossible because machine is not responding. I can only wait doing nothing and waiting till scrolling will stop and then I can go back to right page.

Search box does not allow to type in non US-ASCII characters. So I can not search for words with non US-ASCII characters. In Polish pl keymap they are accessible by pressing R_ALT and character key on keyboard.

Temporary workaround for AR8:
If I open any text editor and type in such non US-ASCII word then copy-paste it to search box then it works.

So it looks AR8 only blocks keyboard input. AR8 should use OS keymap settings to allow typing all characters I need.

CPU load 100% more frequent than v7.08
The CPU load is up to 100% within every 10 minutes, even I run the acroread command only without open any files. While in v7.08, this phenomenon took place only I open the acroread for a whole day.

I upgraded from Acrobat Reader v7 to Acrobat Reader v8.
Even if Acrobat is launched empty, there is a process (ld-linux.so.2) that starts to use 100% after a few seconds/minutes.

The CPU usage is generally between 40 and 60 while the rest goes to the X server (100% CPU distributed over X and ld-linux.so.2)

I can also confirm a 100% CPU load from the process ld-linux.so.2.
The problem occurs when Acrobat Reader has an document open likewise when it run without any document open. It make's no difference when the Reader is minimised or maximised, always after ca. 5-10 minutes 100% cpu load.

As a workaround you can install the lsb package (apt-get install lsb), it decreased the CPU load on my machine to acceptable level.

Correction:
Installing the lsb package makes acrobat process use 100% CPU instead of ld-linux.so.2 after a while. :-\

I couldn't create this link, because the ld-lsb.so.2 did not exist. Then I installed the lsb package from debian where the link was already set, but the 100% load issue did not change :(
Any suggestions?

PS.: I Use a xinerama config with the ATI fglrx driver.

I don't have ld-lsb.so.3 on my system and I can't use apt-get because my repositories are broken and do not want to try to fix it as this is my professional/job computer. I am going to try this adobe version at home to check if happens the same.

I recently updated my system and problem is now fixed. This was not AR8 fault but my system. Please close this bug in Adobe reporting tool. I reported it several times so you will have few bugs closed at once :-).

The English and French version of Adobe Reader 8.1.1 on Solaris work correctly, but this is not the case of the german version. The application is still in English.

Any idea why ?

since I upgraded to acroread 8.x on my ArchLinux I have a problem that might be related to the 100% CPU usage problem reported above. However, it's not that much about CPU but memory usage: sometimes it happens that the reader begins to eat up memory and does not stop until it has filled my 512 Megs if I don't kill it before.
I'm not sure if it's truly a problem of acroread, it might also be konqueror, since it happens only when the reader is embedded in a konqueror window. That's how to reproduce it:

• open two konqueror windows (or split one in two)
  
• in each window open a pdf document
  
• click the "back" button on one of the two windows

Some additional info:
- creating a symlink ld-lsb.so.3 in /lib as described above, does not solve the problem. The only difference is that now the process is named 'acroread' instead of ld-linux.so.2.

- that's how acroread gets called by konqueror (from the output of 'ps'):

/opt/acrobat/Reader/intellinux/bin/acroread --display :0.0 -progressPipe 3 -exitPipe 4

I'm having problems on different sites opening pdf statements- it just won't open a majority of them and crashes my browser sometimes; I use opera for security. I'm a novice at the terminology but this is the best way I know to describe my problem. Opera 9.24 is the version I'm using. Thanks!

I am just trying to do a simple convert of a pdf to ps so I can print it in AIX and I get the following error and no ps doc? FOllowing is the commmand I am running.

On my Red Hat Enterprise 4 based system, acroread 8.1.1 crashes when I do Edit->Preferences. The command line contains: "acroread: cairo-ft-font.c:679: _cairo_ft_unscaled_font_set_scale: Assertion `error == 0' failed."

I confirm the 100% CPU load on Linux with 8.1.1. It is done immediately by the acroread process with or without a PDF file loaded.
We hare on Redhat EL 4.
When I do a strace on the acroread process it seems that it is asking for current time (gettimeofday) continusously (with other operations). Here is the reccurent output of strace:

I have exactly the same problem with ld-linux.so.2. I am running Gentoo linux on amd64. I get this problem when I close a tab with a pdf document in epiphany web browser

Until yesterday we were plagued with the 100% CPU problem as well. After trying various methods to debug the problem (strace, ACRODEBUG,...) we may have found a way to get rid of it: in the debug file (/tmp/efsmessages) one can see that acroread tries to connect to Adobe via http after startup. However, since we are behind a http proxy and that proxy was not configured in acroread's preferences, the connections failed. Soon afterwards (2-5 minutes later) acroread consumes 100% CPU and strace continuously shows the lines MS posted above. We now provide the correct proxy in acroread's settings and voila! acroread behaves nicely: it's been running for hours now without having any problems whatsoever. We tested this on several different machines. Can anyone confirm that this works for him/her as well?

We are also behind a proxy and the workaround posted by Kay seems to work. Even if after this we revert the configuration to "direct connection to internet" (the /ProxyName and /ProxyPort still exist in preferences file and it seems to be sufficient).

Complement: in fact you can put any name as the proxy name it has the same effect.

I can confirm the 100% issue on debian etch. But not the ideas how to get rid of it. Yes, I am testing behind a proxy but not the correct proxy nor another string resolves this issue.

I had an issue with the libgtkembedmoz.so location. I installed xulrunner, and uncommented out the indicated area by step 11. Yet, I still had the error dialog box, Unables to locate.... on a 64 bit machine.

But looking at the wrapper script, Acroread-8.1.1, the if statements that follow the global config file will override the settings entered into mozilla_config.

I moved the if statement to just before:

export ADOBE_USER_PREFERENCES

This made the global config file the last match and therefore the default for the system.

This change has allowed me to install the reader software on an NFS share that is both 32bit and 64bit RHEL compatibible.

I have the same problem as reported by Simon on November 3rd. The ld-linux.so.2 eats so much memory. I would like to add that the system becomes nitidly slow - for instance when typing in txt editors. It begins using about 20 MB memory and this number can increase a lot after sometime with acroread opened.

I'm using acroread under Debian Etch. It works fine except that scrolling through some documents is quite slow while it's normal under Windows . I tried do disable some features (smoothing...) but didn't change anything.

Fonts do not display properly on Ubuntu Gutsy 7.10. Fonts like "Times New Roman" get replaced by "Adobe Sans MM" instead of using the system fonts.

This may be related to the fact that xorg.conf in Gutsy no longer has font directories specified.

I also can confirm the issue with ld-linux.so.2 eating up the cpu.
I am NOT behind a proxy, but I am behind a NAT.
I am using Fedora Core 8 on an old Pentium III.
Another issue is that It seems that I can't scroll the documents using keys (up/down arrows, page-up/page-down), but only by "moving" the scroll bar or by turning the wheel on my mouse. Is this also a known issue?
Although I am Italian, my LANG is en_US.UTF-8, and I am using an US-international keymap (aka us-acentos).

Problem : acroread v8.1.1 and Fedora Core 6 (kernel 2.6.22.14-72.fc6) has CPU 100% usage.

I can confirm that selecting Edit->Preferences->Internet and choosing "Manual Proxy Configuration" with proxy URL and port number for my company network fixes the problem.

It seems that the problem of ld-linuz.so.2 eating up the cpu disappears when the option "allow fast web view" is not ticked in Internet preferences (there are no proxy issues for me, I am not using a proxy, but I am using a NAT).
The up/down and page up/down keys work when viewing local files, but do not work when Reader is within Firefox (2.0.0.10), so I can only use the mouse to scroll a document.
Any clues?

We have encountered issues where using Acrobat Reader 8.1.1 for Linux to search an .idx file produced by Acrobat 8 under Windows missing both hits and entire terms that were matched searching the same index using Acrobat Reader under Windows!

I will attempt to distill down a test case, but is this an issue others have reported?

All should at least be aware that the search feature of Reader 8.1.1 for Linux may not return expected hits.

I am not able to read any .pdf file sent to me currently. I get a message that says that "document is untagged and must be prepared for reading. While the document is being analyzed, your assistive technology will not be able to interact with this application." THEN MS sends a box that "Adobe Reader 8.1 has encountered a problem and needs to close......" - but doesn't give 'more info' on it.
This has happened with ANY .pdf I try to read!

Cut&Paste only works once with Acroread 8.1.2 under Linux.

After you selected some text, copy it, then paste -> you can't copy any other selected text. The copy buffer still holds the old text ...

I am using 8.1.2(zh-CN) on Debian etch. I confirm that ld-linuz.so.2 eating up the cpu disappears when the option "allow fast web view" is not ticked in Internet preferences (by Aldo Muzzi).

When I try to read a file with version 8.1.1, I get a message saying there is a problem with adobe reader and requesting that I close and try again. I've tried to uninstall but it doesn't recognise the patch and I've tried to install 8.1.2 but it won't uninstall the previous version either. Consequently, I cannot now rely on adobe reader despite success with previous versions.

1.It eats up the memory unless i kill it, at one point it took 1.2 gb when I had a 5mb pdf open. This is very common it happens so often that i am reall getting annoyed at it.
2.sometimes the mozilla plugin doesn't work, a blank page just show up. I think the fix is to restart the browser, but i aint sure.

i hope the issues i have highlighted get fixed, i truly like adobe reader.

64-bit firefox, via nspluginwrapper on Fedora 8. Have no proxy configured. Fast web view is disabled.

ld-linux.so.2 still *sometimes* uses CPU and memory after loading a PDF inside Firefox.

Seeing some comments above about lsb, I realized I had the x86_64 redhat-lsb installed, but not the i386 version, which includes /lib/ld-lsb.so.3. After loading redhat-lsb@i386, I have so far have not experienced the problem again, although I've only loaded three or four PDFs so far.

A followup to my last comment -- as another poster said, using ld-lsb just shifts the problem from ld-linux.so.2 to acroread.

So, despite no proxy and fast web view turned off, I am still experiencing this problem.

I download the trial version of Adobe Acrobat 8.1.2. I found it to be not user friendly, but now it will not uninstall. I get the error 1326 message and it does not uninstall.

I have tried to uninstall it using Windows Program uninstall and it will not work.

I am using Windows 2000. Since installing AR 8.1.2, Firefox will not launch AR when I click on a link on an internet page that wants to open a .pdf document. Works fine with Internet Explorer, but not Firefox. How do I get Firefox to open AR 8.1.2?

I have not been able to print since upgrading my reader to 8.1.1 and what is worse none of the fixes work and reader 8 won't uninstall and won't let 8.1.2 uninstall it to upgrade. What do I do??? I have XP home and this is only an issue with PDF files all others print.

CPU Usage up to 100% on Windows Systems with AR8.1.2

We have some converted pdf dokuments (from eps), which causes a high cpu usage on Windows XP/Vista systems. Same dokument causes AR8.1.2 crashes on other Windows XP Systems. Same documents can be opened with AR7.x

We found that this issue comes while using Adobe Distiller 7.0.9 or ghostscript (with multiple devices setting) but not with Adobe Distiller 8.1

Can you please point out the changes/issues from Distiller 7.0.9 to 8.1 an Reader 7.x to 8.x

ice-dove (aka firefox) keeps ld-linux open even after the web page is closed, this is probably due to ice-dove. goes away when closing ice-dove.
konqueror nicely closes ld-linux when one pdf is viewed embedded at a time. With 2 open the above problem occurs. The ownership of ld-linux moves from konqueror to the kde-init process after the second pdf is closed and the meomory eating starts.

Ownership of ld-linux.so.2 shifts to init after closing the tab, and then it begins taking all the memory there is unless killed before.

If you need any more info, please say so. This bug has existed for over 6 months as far as I can tell, and you have yet to take a stand towards it. Is there work being done, or is it just ignored?

I am also behind a proxy, but circumventing it through a VPN has not really brought any improvement. Also, the PDFs are shown, and everything works as expected until I close the tab with acroread.
