I solved this on Debian 5/Squeeze. After installing the AdobeReader_enu-8.1.3-1.i486.tar.gz into /usr/local/bin. The default directory is /opt.

I know that acroread is in Squeeze, but it suffers the same problem as the OP.

Additionally, the .deb provided by Adobe does not properly handle the –distdir switch to place the installed files into a directory other than /opt.

Here are the steps:
su root
cat > /etc/ld.so.conf.d/Adobe.conf
/usr/local/bin/Adobe/Reader8/Reader/intellinux/lib
^D
ldconfig
verify the fix: ldconfig -p | grep -i adobe

I have:
1) tried to remove adobe with remove programs and it didn’t work.
2) I bought a third party program remover which did not work.
3) I deleted the entire Adobe Directory in Program Files and it didn’t work. (good bye Photoshop)
4) I deleted all of the Adobe keys in the Registry and it didn’t work.

YOU HAVE A PROBLEM HERE.

Is there a fix?

(BTW, I had the same problem on my office machine that runs Vista — at the same time. Is it a ploy to get us to upgrade? My paranoid side wants to know…)

However, when scrolling, the text of the form disappears. I have plenty of memory, etc. Using latest version of Reader – 8.1.2, on Vista Premium. No other programs are running when this occurs. Any ideas why the text disappears?

the splash screen showed and a window entitled “License Agreement” appeared with nothing on the window, then the program stuck. Does any one know what’s wrong with it?

As soon as I open any PDF file the process starts in bg and is using 100% of one CPU core. Memory usage increases about 1-2MB per second.

It errors out and says it canot uninstall Adobe 8. It also will not let me uninstall manually.
