After receiving hundreds of requests from users of Adobe Reader to release a version on Solaris x86 platform, here's something all of you have been waiting to hear - yes, the decision to add this support has been taken and we're planning to add Solaris x86 to our supported platforms list in the next release of Adobe Reader which might happen in 2009.

This was, of course, not a straightforward decision - there are lots of dependencies that we need to deal with, including third-party dependencies, platform limitations, internal and external dependencies and resource constraints. These constraints are not always apparent but have to be dealt with when a huge product like the Reader needs to be ported to a new platform.

As always, we're keen on understanding the needs of the users of our product and to do as much as we possibly can. We would like to thank each one of you for persevering, and would request you to continue to provide us with valuable feedback about any and every aspect of the product to help us make it even better! And of course, thanks for your patience!

On behalf of The Unix Reader Team

Great news!
Maybe I should just be thankful but any chance this package could be made available through IPS as well as the standard PKG format?

Many thanks for supporting this platform, I look forward to running it on my Ultra 20 :)

Appreciate your support & decision to release.

I do look forward to that day we'll have AcroRead on Solaris x86. When you do provide a reader, I will assemble a group of members in the OpenSolaris community and we'll wash JohnnyL's car at the Adobe building in downtown San Jose.

In the meantime, do you think it would be possible that our community could get an unsupported version? 2009 seems like a long ways out...I imagine an unsupported beta of the future release would be well accepted by the OpenSolaris community at large, IMO.

I'm serious about the car wash, JohnnyL is very fond of car washes...OTOH, I'm not very fond of car washes even for my own car, so I'm not running down to wash his car until we have something. :-)

I am thankful that you posted this info, it is encouraging. I use a SPARC system and it has a reader today, albeit quite old. I hope you will update the SPARC version at the same time also. Tell JohnnyL if he doesn't upgrade the SPARC version we'll wash his car, but we won't clean the windows or interior. :-)

This is great news. It's been many, many years since Adobe left Solaris on the x86/x64 platforms on the shelf.

Btw, surely it was *thousands* of people, not just hundreds, who have been asking you for this?

I hope there'll be a preview available on labs.adobe.com too.

It would be even more awesome if you could put out a "development release" of the existing Adobe Reader for Solaris x86 with the stated expectation that it won't get any support until the "real" release comes in 2009. Should be just a recompile.. How bad can it be compared to what's out there now?

Pretty Please?

--->> Adobe, *thank you* for listening. Green light, indeed.
I'm running OpenSolaris both on SPARC and x86/x64, but the lack of a native Reader Version >= 4.x has been a significant limitation on x86. I'm relieved this milestone of an initial official announcement could be reached.

And congrats to the OpenSolaris community, which seems to be growing exponentially.

Adobe Reader 8.1.1 doesn't function well: I can read PDF-pages, but I can't print them. A new try to install failed and the message was that an older version couldnot be removed. When I tried to remove the program with the standard uninstall-possibilities of Windows XP I received the message that the program couldnot open the patchpack (or package?) and that I should ask you if the Adobe Reader contains a valid Windows XP Installer-Pactchpack(age?). Wat can I do and how can you help.

I had this issue on a 2-core machine. Starting one Acrobat (in Firefox) would hog one core 100%. Starting another instance would hog the other to 100%. This is on SuSE Linux Enterprise 10.1.

I tried the proxy fix and it worked. I'm behind a corporate intranet so the proxy is a plausible cause for this (how I don't know, that's your task now, Adobe).

Thanks for the tip!

I can replicate this issue quite easily when using Reader as a Firefox plugin, just by surfing to random PDF files on the Internet. Sometimes the problem manifests and sometimes it does not. CPU usage stays constantly high on one core (though not 100%) and memory use increases until the acroread process is killed.

I have a Direct connection (no proxy) configured.

System details:

Fedora 8, Quad-Core
Kernel 2.6.24.4-64.fc8
Firefox 2.0.0.13 x86_64
Adobe Reader 8.1.2 rpm
nspluginwrapper 0.9.91.5

Cheers,
Raman

You need look at the acrobat code that is trying to access pmupsw.adobe.com. Acroread gets into an infinite loop when it can't access this site. I ran wireshark and it chokes right after requesting this site ip from dns.

sorry for cross commenting, i found this after posting comment to "Known Issues with Reader 8.1.2" i think this is correct place.

We have this issues 100% CPU usage and up to 200MB memory usage for 100Kb pdf dokument:

on Windows Systems with AR8.1.2

We have some converted pdf dokuments (from eps), which causes a high cpu usage on Windows XP/Vista systems. Same dokument causes AR8.1.2 crashes on other Windows XP Systems. Same documents can be opened with AR7.x

We found that this issue comes while using Adobe Distiller 7.0.9 or ghostscript (with multiple devices setting) but not with Adobe Distiller 8.1

Can you please point out the changes/issues from Distiller 7.0.9 to 8.1 an Reader 7.x to 8.x

thanks in advance

I have the same problem here on two machines, both fedora 8 on core 2 duos (e6600, 7100). I have to kill it using signal 9 to get rid of it. I managed to reproduce it also on centos 5.1 (redhat enterprise 5.1). Acroread is started as a firefox plugin and stays in the process list even after finishing firefox. It is really annoying and I am close to remove acroread if this problem is not getting fixed soon. I do not see why Adobe cannot reproduce the problem. Get a maschine up and running (use xen or kvm for testing if you bother setting up a system freshly) on fedora 8, install firefox and your acroread by yum. That is done in less than 15 minutes.

The purpose of this page is to provide a platform for all users of Adobe Reader for Unix to submit Feature Requests for future versions of the Reader. We know you have great ideas that you'd like to see implemented in the reader, and we want to hear from you!

Because it's not a perfect world, it's not always possible to implement each and every feature request, but we do look at each item very seriously and try our best to implement the same.

So if you have a great idea or feature that you'd like to see implemented in the Adobe Reader for Unix Platforms, go ahead and post a comment on this page. We will add your idea to this list after review. Once again, thanks for your continues feedback - that's what keeps us going!

I would like to see features to help diagnose problems and provide information that is currently difficult to obtain:

1. better reporting for errors
or just potential problems with fonts, drawing off the page, etc. Something like the "ghostscript" messages panel in
gsview would be useful when a document fails to render as expected.

2. tools to give information about a selection (font, etc.)

Sometimes an "unexpected" font appears on the document properties list, so it would be nice to select a font on the list and have all the glyphs in the document from that font highlighted. In other cases, you need to match some text and it would be useful to select it and be able to see which font is used.

Please add 2D GPU acceleration like in AR8 for win. You can do this in Linux using OpenGL/GLX API. OpenGL 2.0 is able to use vertex/pixel shaders on Radeon and Geforce cards so come on.

AdobeReader_enu-8.1.2-1.i486.tar.bz2
This .i486. extension suggest you build AR8 binaries with optimization for this ancient CPU family. This slowdowns AR8 (which is really slow). Please use "-march=i686" gcc parameter to build AR8 for i686 platform which means AR8 will work faster because the use of MMX and other i686 CPU class features. By adding "-march=i686" AR8 binaries will work with any Intel CPU since Pentium3 and AMD K6 family up to latests.

I would love to see the following feature.

Imagine there being another panel for "document views" (much like for bookmarks) which starts out with a single view which just shows a miniature version of what you see in the main window. Now imagine that with a click of a button the currently active view gets cloned, and the duplicate becomes active. Clicking on an inactive view would make it active, and put the main window to that position in the document.

What this would allow is while reading a document to save a few spots in it to which one could quickly jump. When reading something on paper it's easy to find such spots (e.g., bibliography section of a paper or a particular figure). I suspect such ability to easily jump between places would be very helpful for on-screen reading.

(Tobias on

Reloading the file automatically may not always a good idea. In the case of LaTeX typesetting, which was the original motivation for the feature request, the file changes during a long time interval. The PDFTeX processor takes some time to process long documents, all the while writing to the PDF file. With LaTeX almost always several runs of the processor are needed to resolve page references in the document. If AR would reload immediately upon detecting a last-modified change, it might be too early and the PDF may be in an inconsistent, or corrupt, state.
So, please allow to only reload upon request.
This might be a command-line option:
acroread -reload file.pdf
os simply
acroread file.pdf
to reload if the file is already loaded.

(Mike R. on
May 15, 2008 10:20 PM)

You provide a version of acroread for Solaris on Sparc, but have not done so for Solaris X86 since 4.05 was released.

There are currently more downloads of Solaris for X86 than there are for Sparc, although they are close in number. Also, X86 system are far more likely to be used for desktops than a Sparc system would be, as most Sparc systems are servers and not workstations. Although a server may be serving SunRay desktops.

Compiling for X86 would simply be a matter of recompiling what you have on Sparc, since Solaris is source compatible between platforms. If there is a concern about 32-bit versus 64-bit on X86 simply provide a 32-bit and it will run on any X86 system.

THe development tools are available for free and the OS starting with Solaris 10 is available for free. Solaris X86 support multi-boot of other OSes via GRUB, so a sible X86 system could be used to develop and test acroread on Solaris, Linux, and Windows if you need to conserve system costs.

With Solaris Express we now have Evince, but it still does not have all features of acroread. Star Office can provide PDF files for it's documents, but it is not the same as having distiller with all it's features. But if you wait much longer both Distiller and Acroread may become irrelevant if they are not made available on all platforms these other tools are.

Can we *please*, pretty *please* have an Adobe Acrobat reader for (Open)Solaris on x86?! Please.

Solaris x86 is my current desktop platform and preferred development environment. The lack of a genuine, fully functional PDF reader is a constant, daily headache. And since Adobe already ships Acrobat for SPARC, a copy of the source code should simply compile and link on an x86 platform if the code is reasonably well written.

Please - even an unsupported beta would work for me.

A current version for Solaris X86 / X64 would be outstanding. Largefile support would also be advantageous, though I shudder to think that we might see larger than 2GB PDF's...

Multi-threadding, (if it's not already there), would be awesome. If there was any way to get the reader to render using a user-selectable number of threads, it would greatly help the performance of the reader on heavily multi-threaded systems.

Thanks for taking the time to listen. :)

A version for Solaris x86 has been on the top of my wishlist along side continued Flashplayer 9 support (which has been great BTW). I'm curious given the fairly modest porting effort (mostly a recompile with some other minor tasks) has the estimate for test and support for a Solaris x86 version been that high?

The results of keeping that page was that we were able to tackle and fix issues faster, and you were able to report any new issues quickly.

This page attempts to do the same thing, for Reader 8.1.2. This page will be updated regularly with new Known Issues in this release. Note that a "Known Issue" listed on this page is one that has been confirmed to be a bug in this release by Adobe testers and has been logged in our internal bug tracking system. These issues are our highest priority and we try to fix them by the next patch or major release.

So please keep your feedback coming in as it has been so far and help us improve this product! You can post your feedback either on this page or on the User-to-user forums and we'll see to it that we resolve your issue.

Acroread 8.1.2 cannot print multiple copies
There's a bug in Adobe Reader 8.1.2 (reported here) wherein printing to multiple copies to any printer doesn't work.

Some 3D files throw "3D Parsing Error" on trying to enable 3D on Solaris
This issue is present on Solaris Reader and is file specific. On trying to enable 3D on some 3D files on Solaris the Reader returns an alert saying "3D Parsing Error" and the 3D image is shown blank.

Acroread 8.x doesn't properly support Unix Style Copy/Paste
This issue has been reported by multiple users at on the User-to-user forums. The Primary selection clipboard text is not updated on second selection and the paste returns the first item that was selected. This is a known bug in Adobe Reader 8.x and will be fixed in the next release.

Acroread locks up when going to Edit -> Preferences | Reviewing
This issue has been reported by users here. The issue is reproducible on opensuse 10.3, Ubuntu 6.10 and RHEL5. The hang/lock-up happens on second or third iteration of opening the Edit -> Preferences -> Reviewing tab.

Hi, thanks for doing a great job.

What I'd like to see in the next release (I wouldn't mind if it happens sooner ;)) is proper Linux clipboard experience. I don't know if it matters that I'm using KDE (on Debian unstable), so to everybody: if you're using something other than KDE and don't have any problems with clipboard actions in Adobe Reader, please let me know.

The clipboard experience with Adobe Reader using KDE is frustrating - sometimes works, sometimes not. But when I say it sometimes works, it just means that it *will* work at times, but then the next time you try to use it (without restarting Adobe Reader) it *won't* work. So it would be more correct saying that it doesn't give the proper experience.
The worst thing is that is seems (at least to me) unpredictable. It usually works the first time I use it after starting Adobe Reader, but not always. If it works the first time, the second time it usually doesn't. I have to clear the clipboard content and then - also, only sometimes - it works for one more time.
The mess is even greater when I try right button > copy routine inside Adobe Reader (for example, sometimes, after a lot of copying - and clearing the clipboard content - I somehow get content in the clipboard that I have copied several copies before).

The clipboard experience is a must. A nice touch would be if Adobe could use KDE's default cursor. Again, I don't know if this is only related to KDE, but inside Adobe Reader I have this ugly big white cursor, and everywhere else (and not just KDE applications) uses my default slick black cursor. Actually, I see my default cursor when I open the 'Open' (file) dialog inside Adobe Reader.

Once again, thanks for doing a great job and if you need any more input form me, please let me know.

Dom

The first thing that happens when I boot up my new Vista PC is that I receive a message "Acrotray has stopped working". I was hoping the upgrade from 8.1.1 to 8.1.2 would fix this, but it has not.

I recently upgraded to Reader 8 (free version with Windows XP). Now when a website tries to access it, I get a 2-3 minute pause then an error message along the lines of "cannot find patch, make sure it exists". I click ok and reader comes up, I x it out and the website continues as normal. I've tried to uninstall and re-install but get the same message.
Can anyone help, so I don't have to go thru the manual uninstallation?

Adobe Reader 8.1.2 has a new "feature" that pops a dialog box with the message "This document is trying to print. Do you want to allow this?". Previously, the process would just print without interruption. This dialog is an impediment to workflow. I know this fixes a security issue... but we need to disable it for a web application we use (e.g. trust it for a specific domain). Is this possible?

Large File Support is missing; when opening PDFs >2GiB, AR simply barfs that the file is too large. I know that AR is a 32 bit app; but LFS doesn't need proper 64bit, only 64bit for offsets and some adaptions (fseek/fseeko etc.) that are known for more then a decade.

Adobe Reader 8.1.2 has a new "feature" that pops a dialog box with the message "This document is trying to print. Do you want to allow this?"

This issue really needs to be addressed. We use Adobe Reader to automatically print documents in a web application. The users are not very happy having to click twice to get the document to print.

You need to add support to trust domains, or an option to disable the warning (not very secure, I'd go for the first option).

Another option is to add the possibility to trust signed documents to print. But the option to trust domains seems simpler.

Adobe Reader 8.1.2 seems to have broken the javascript eval functions that we have coded within our Livecycle forms. Code that was working fine for Reader 8.1.1 is now failing causing the rest of the script within the same function to be skipped. This is a critial error for our application!

(Jim on
Mar 6, 2008 3:22 AM)

As stated in an earlier post:
Adobe Reader 8.1.2 has a new "feature" that pops a dialog box with the message "This document is trying to print. Do you want to allow this?"

This is real inconvenient. We have several applications that automatically print documents. Is this supposed to be a new security feature? There should be a way documented to optionally turn off new "features" like this. That way we can decide ourselves if this type of printing is a security risk or not instead of having the decision made for us.

We also affected by the 'This document is trying to print' and need a proper solution. As another poster has suggested can some form of trusted domain be provided for?

We have a web application used by our customers to create documentation for shipments and it creates PDF files with a little javascript to automatically print them out. This makes web generation of high quality documents a doddle.

It's not practical for use to get our clients to use the javscript work around I've seen (a .js file with a function that does the silent print and call it from the PDF file) on our customers PCs.

We're getting a steady stream of complaints as our clients upgrade to Acrobat Reader 8.1.2.

Adobe Reader 8.1.2 has problems opening files. It will open some; others it will open if saved to the laptop but not over the internet; and still others it will not open in any case. We can use other computers with earlier versions of Adobe Reader and all of these files open fine, with no delay. We have cleared up IE caching, uninstalled and reinstalled the Reader with no success. Is the solution as simple as installing an older version, or does Adobe have a fix on the horizon. Thanks.

The following Javascript generates an exception on 8.1.2, but works fine on 8.1.1 and previous versions:

for(var i in this.info)

this.info appears to be evaluating to an empty string rather than an object with properties when used with a for/in statement.

I have a simple pdf file that contains document open JavaScript that demonstrates the issue. I can send the sample to aid identification of the bug if I can get a place to send it.

On versions of reader before 8.1.2, a text field in the sample will be populated with information. On reader 8.1.2, an exception occurs and nothing is put in the text field. The exception occurs when the above line of code is encountered.

Hi
In Acroread for Linux 8.1.2, Edit->Preferences->Full Screen->Full Screen Appearance->Background Color does not work.
Background is black and cannot be changed. On some documents that we receive from customers this prevents us from using 8.1.2 as the images come out completely black; with V. 7 everything is fine.
Thanks

Adobe's Acrobat Reader Update 8.1.2 has too many issues for it to be a viable option:

Massive download: It downloades an enormous update of many MBs: updates are supposed to be small and unintrusive; don't make the process hard.

System Restart: Why does a document reader force me to restart my system? Heck, MS Office updates don't ask me to restart my system, then why should Adobe? That's just not right. Remember Adobe, system restarts are for critical or error events, not for a document reader. Don't mess with users' systems.

Cannot shutdown: The reader update forces a reboot, but then won't let the system shutdown. All Windows XP boxes I've tried this on hung when shutting down and required a hard power off. On top of making it hard and unviable, Adobe's making it unstable too.

"Acroread 8.x doesn't properly support Unix Style Copy/Paste."

This is a fucking bug because you cannot use a dictionary (stardict, babylon type..) to select and found words.

And solution might be simple for the programmer, AR8 remembers always the first selection.

I'm really disappointed I can't load Adobe Reader 8.1.2, nor can I reinstal version 7.

I've tried the tips shown in this forum, which I'm grateful for, but I'm giving up now.

Foxit Reader is freeware which seems to be almost as good as AR 7, I got it at http://www.foxitsoftware.com/

I hope Adobe will solve the problem, because I really liked AR7 and I look forward to an even better AR8, but I don't have the luxury of another day to waste day trying to instal it, nor do I have the patience. I also didn't like being forced into an upgrade without any message telling me the new version was available.

I run Windows XP Pro, and use Norton Internet Security 2008. I suspect there's some setting in one of those programs that I could tweak, but I'm not a programmer and I don't want to crash my entire system.

The following error pops up in setroubleshooter when opening a PDF form with Adobe Reader 8.1.2 on a Fedora 8 system with SELinux in enforcing mode. It looks like an Adobe Reader issue. If Reader is opened again the alert will not appear until you toggle form highlighting on/off and restart Reader.

Summary:

SELinux is preventing ld-linux.so.2 from changing the access protection of
memory on the heap.

Detailed Description:

The ld-linux.so.2 application attempted to change the access protection of
memory on the heap (e.g., allocated using malloc). This is a potential security
problem. Applications should not be doing this. Applications are sometimes coded
incorrectly and request this permission. The SELinux Memory Protection Tests
(http://people.redhat.com/drepper/selinux-mem.html) web page explains how to
remove this requirement. If ld-linux.so.2 does not work and you need it to work,
you can configure SELinux temporarily to allow this access until the application
is fixed. Please file a bug report
(http://bugzilla.redhat.com/bugzilla/enter_bug.cgi) against this package.

Allowing Access:

If you want ld-linux.so.2 to continue, you must turn on the allow_execheap
boolean. Note: This boolean will affect all applications on the system.

The following command will allow this access:

setsebool -P allow_execheap=1

I found the solution to a problem. With Acrobat 8.12, the stand-alone reader seems to work OK, but the plug-in has some sort of memory leak when using Firefox (I'm using FF3.0B5 with FC9). You'll know it is happening if you click on a pdf in Firefox, the browser goes to another page (as if it is loading the pdf), then says "Done" in the lower status bar.

http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.59b507ae

If a terminal is opened and top is used to look at processes, you'll find that ld-linux.so2 is using 30-50% of CPU time. If one uses the back button, then tries to load another pdf, another instance of ld-linux.so2 opens and uses another 30-40% of CPU time. At this point, the computer is pretty unresponsive, but if the ld-linux.so2 processes are killed (kill -9 pid) everything returns to normal.

I tried this with Acrobat Reader 7.0.9.1 from Adobe's web site, and pretty much the same thing happens but the process that hogs the CPU is acroread.

So, my workaround was to keep acorread 7.0.9.1 installed, but delete the browser plugin (nppdf.so) as root from the plugin directory (/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins). Then make sure that evince is used by FF (edit -> preferences -> applications, then select Document Viewer as PDF preference). This workaround will allow viewing of pdfs from FF using evince, but if you need acroread the pdf link can be right clicked on, saved to the computer, and viewed with acroread. In my limited testing, acroread used as a stand-alone app doesn't cause this problem, but YMMV.

General Issues

Problems running on Solaris 10: There were issues with Adobe Reader 8.1.1 on the default installation of Solaris 10 due to GTK version. This has been fixed in 8.1.2 Reader which does not require users to upgrade GTK to 2.6.

Launch problem on Solaris 9: On some Solaris 9 machines Acroread 8.1.1 did not launch and hung on startup. This has been fixed in Reader 8.1.2

Font caching Issues: Various font caching issues are fixed in Reader 8.1.2, including the issue of fonts that were configured using fontconfig not being picked up by the Reader to render documents (reported by Novell here).

Reader freezes for 40 seconds on startup: This was also related to font caching (originally reported here) and has been fixed in Reader 8.1.2

Unable to find the HTML rendering library (libgtkembedmoz): This issue was reported by many users who did not have the libgtkmozembed library installed properly (discussed in the Adobe Reader 8.1.1 FAQs, point 2). Some fixes have been made in Reader 8.1.2 to ensure that the alert for the missing library is not shown on every startup to enhance the user experience.

Problem with Dual-screen setup (Xinerama mode): Issue number 4 listed on the Known Issues page for Reader 8.1.1 (also reported here). This has been fixed in Reader 8.1.2

Firefox plugin problem on SELinux Enabled systems: On SELinux enabled systems nppdf.so did not load with Reader 8.1.1 (originally reported here). This has been fixed in Reader 8.1.2.

Document ordering and fullscreen mode: Issue reported here has been fixed in Reader 8.1.2

Font KozGoProVI-Medium.otf is missing in Japanese Reader: Reported here, this issue is fixed in Reader 8.1.2

Not able to play multimedia with RealPlayer 10 on Linux under some conditions:8.1.2 Reader has better support for playing multimedia using the latest release of RealPlayer on Linux.

Printing Related Issues

Incorrect orientation: Issues with printing PDF files containing portrait and landscape pages (reported here) have been fixed in Reader 8.1.2. Choosing "Auto Rotate and Center" will now print the pages in their inherent orientation.

Red wash on printing with HP CLJ 2605: A workaround for this has been added in the preferences ($HOME/.adobe/Acrobat/8.0/Preferences/reader_prefs), namely "brokenCRDs". This value is set to "false" by default and can be modified to "true" if one faces the red background issue.

Scaling issues: Problems with -shrink/-expand options in the command line (Issue #1 listed on the Known Issues page for Reader 8.1.1) as well as with "Custom" printing in the dialog (reported here) have been fixed in Reader 8.1.2

Incorrect preview on Ubuntu Fiesty: The default page size for a printer (and not US Letter) is used to draw the print preview.

Reader does not remember last chosen printer across sessions: Last chosen printer is now remembered between different sessions of the Reader in 8.1.2 release.

Cannot pipe PDF as input to acroread: PDF contents can be read from stdin when using the -toPostScript option

Hardcoding of printer command: Earlier the printer command was hardcoded in the reader binary (reported here). This has been fixed in Reader 8.1.2 to pick up the command from the PATH environment variable.

Hello,

If anyone at adobe is listening, please provide us with a current version of acrobat reader for opensolaris/solaris x86.

At the very least you should explain the technical reasons behind the unavailability of acroread on solaris x86.

I know people have been pissed at adobe due to this for several years now !

This is great news. Thanks for keeping Adobe Reader current on these platforms ... but when will there be a version for Solaris on x86? I've been waiting for years ....

(Peter on
Feb 7, 2008 6:21 AM)

I agree with Jeff, I too have been waiting for years for the Solaris X86 version. Support X86 Unix (Linux) exists, support for Solaris (SPARC) exists. The effort required to have Solaris X86 as a supported platform should be minimal. And with virtual machines, you don't even have to buy a new compile server :-)

Hello,

thanks for making Adobe Reader 8.1.2 available for Linux.

If a hyperlink in a PDF file points to an external application, is it
possible to launch this application from Adobe Reader, as it is the
case since a long time with other PDF viewers on Linux (as xpdf for instance)?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Please release Reader for Solaris x86. As previous posters have noted, you have a Solaris SPARC version and Linux x86 version. A Solaris x86 version should be very simple to produce.

The most missing feature for me is "2D GPU acceleration". I have Athlon64 3000+ and I'm sure AR8 could be faster. There are some interfaces, APIs which may be useful for this purpose: OpenGL/GLX 2.1.2 or XRender acceleration. Nvidia, AMD (ATI) and Intel have very speedy OpenGL on Linux platform so why not use this GPU powerhouse for AR8 turbo mode. Adobe Flash Player 9,0,115 for Linux already uses OpenGL/GLX for video acceleration so this Linux API looks to be familiar to Adobe.

Also compiling AR8 binaries for i686 platform or higher could increase speed. The present AR8 i486 platform is a little bit funny and archaic when an user imagines how ill must be person trying to use AR8 on genuine Intel 486 CPU with few Megabytes of RAM.
Most Linux distributions are compiled nowadays for i686 so AR8 should also be on this level. This is not very hard to do: just add -march=i686 parameter to other gcc compilation options.

Can we get this release compiled with GTK 2.4
so that it will actually run on the Solaris 10
distribution? Please?

Yes. Adobe Reader 8.1.2 should work with GTK 2.4 on Solaris 10. Look out for the release announcement, now just a few days away.

The JS fragment:
With Adobe Reader 8.1.1 the fragment fails when run in a page-open /PO event, unless the PDF is forms-enabled.
2D GPU acceleration would be nice to have (using OpenGL->GLX) because sometimes pdf pages with Commenting and Drawing Markup baloon boxes are scrolling very sloooow. Especially there where are plenty of them on one page.
In such situations I can sometimes loose control over scrolling up down and computer scrolls many pages far away I want. Stopping it is impossible because machine is not responding. I can only wait doing nothing and waiting till scrolling will stop and then I can go back to right page.

Search box does not allow to type in non US-ASCII characters. So I can not search for words with non US-ASCII characters. In Polish pl keymap they are accessible by pressing R_ALT and character key on keyboard.

Temporary workaround for AR8:
If I open any text editor and type in such non US-ASCII word then copy-paste it to search box then it works.

So it looks AR8 only blocks keyboard input. AR8 should use OS keymap settings to allow typing all characters I need.

Hi, Thanks for pointing out the problem. We have taken a note of it. We will try to fix it in the next release. -Shalini

the rest of adobe should take note - love the fact that you let users know they have been heard and that the issues are being worked on. Can you give us an update on the ps cs3 printing issue??? :)

CPU load 100% more frequent than v7.08
The CPU load is up to 100% within every 10 minutes, even I run the acroread command only without open any files. While in v7.08, this phenomenon took place only I open the acroread for a whole day.
Debian testing, gnome
zh_CN.GBK or en.US

I FULLY confirm Tangbo statement.

I upgraded from Acrobat Reader v7 to Acrobat Reader v8.
Even if Acrobat is launched empty, there is a process (ld-linux.so.2) that starts to use 100% after a few seconds/minutes.

I am using a Debian based distribution (KNOPPIX).

Hi TangBo/OnOffPT

ld-linux.so.2 is the loader for acroread on non LSB distributions , like yours. You will see this process running if u do a ps on your system . We understand that high CPU usage when no operation is being performed is a big user concern. In order to investigate , could you please let us know the following

1. State of the acroread window(maximized/minimized)
2. CPU usage when the window is minimized (present as a taskbar button) .
3. The machine configuration (RAM,CPU Mhz etc.)

Best regards
Sanika

Dear Sir,

I also had problems with the above and noticed that the problem occurs when closing the Adobe reader 8 in firefox (when used as a plugin).

The CPU usage is generally between 40 and 60 while the rest goes to the X server (100% CPU distributed over X and ld-linux.so.2)
Configuration : 2GB RAM, intel core2duo, Mandriva 2007.1 x86_64

With kind regards
Klaas
