The 2014 Adobe Design Achievement Awards (ADAA) Motion Graphics category was won by a team of three students from Savannah College of Art and Design. Team members Peter Clark, Yeojin Shin, and Daniel Uribe impressed the ADAA judges with their experimental video, Memory Stream. The team earned the judges’ interest by pursuing creative techniques they had not tried before; including stop-motion photography, claymation, laser-step printing, frame-by-frame animation, and hand-drawn film animation, to deliver their exceptional finished piece.
The group from Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) attended the ADAA ceremony held in Los Angeles during the Adobe MAX creativity conference. Group member Peter Clark commented, “It was amazing to attend the ADAA ceremony, and see the level of craft that other young artists and designers have achieved. I saw their drive to create unique projects in context with contemporary techniques, and it pushed me to further experiment with my own work.”
Peter added, “Hopefully the ADAA experience will lead to future collaborations with the talented designers that I met through the ADAA community.”
Since then, Peter has continued pushing boundaries and experimenting with fellow emerging artists. One of his recent iterations is called Primordial, created in collaboration with Jason Kerr and Chriss Bjerre. Primordial is a tandem project, with each contributing artist purposefully designing their segments to sequentially build a single story of rich visuals. Peter provided the animation and sound design for the piece. The video was inspired by the concept of pathways and mutations for survival among microscopic life and organisms. ADAA winning team member Daniel Uribe is planning to graduate soon. During his senior year, Daniel has been working with fellow SCAD student, Chris Salvador. Their co-directorial piece, Interlude, is a film that interprets linear and abstract time, with its connection to life. Interlude explores the notion of time defined by the relationship between math, science, as well as memories and nostalgia.
The SCAD team members will continue working on experimental or tandem projects as a way to discover new techniques and perspectives. After graduation, Daniel will begin his 6-month internship at BUCK NYC, along with his ADAA team member, Yeojin Shin. The two will likely collaborate again on future projects while in New York.
