42 Finalists Announced – 2015 Adobe Design Achievement Awards

Adobe is proud and excited to announce the finalists for the 2015 Adobe Design Achievement Awards. For 15 years, the ADAA has showcased top new talent and launched careers from around the world – recognizing over 15,000 aspiring creative professionals and empowering the student community to present and celebrate their best work.
Industry heavy hitters – including Adobe’s Executive Creative Director, AJ Joseph – reviewed over 600 semi-finalists from 37 countries and 171 institutions to distinguish 42 finalists across 13 categories:

“I remember my first big break when I got something into the NewMedia Invision Awards, and it really launched my career. Just the chance to present a talented man or woman with that same opportunity is rewarding and inspiring, because it makes you appreciate your own journey more.”

– Bradley G Munkowitz – Designer + Director @ GMUNK

“I typically look for the narrative – ‘what’s the story?’. But, we also have to look beyond and ask if there’s a strong theoretical underpinning – a craft. There has to be a real attention to detail, and there also has to be heart.”

– Nathan Moody – Co-Founder and Design Director of STIMULΛNT

Every student who submits an entry into the Adobe Design Achievement Awards (ADAA) contest is eligible to apply for creative mentorship from an industry professional.

Adobe Education has partnered with ico-D, International Council of Design to develop the Adobe ico-D Mentorship Program and seek out the most dynamic creative experts to serve as mentors for students merging into the professional arena. Mentors provide selected students with portfolio development, career guidance or opportunity for future collaborations, regardless of whether the students’ projects are selected for placement in the ADAA contest.

In 2014, the program received 374 applications from students living in 44 countries around the world. Student Boris Pramatarov was mentored by Jay Taylor, illustrator and Course Director for Fine Art and Illustration at Coventry University in the United Kingdom.

Originally from Bulgaria, Boris is currently pursuing his Master’s Degree at Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten in Ghent, Belgium. Through dialogue and collaboration with mentor Jay Taylor, Boris produced a series of illustrations themed on man versus beast. As a result of this shared creative process, Boris’ detailed compositions evolved into introspective graphic explorations of his innermost fears, serving to overcome while furthering his career.

“My mentorship experience helped me learn how to turn my passion into a career. I was exposed to many websites and competitions, and my mentor gave me advice for finding clients. The whole process showed me new horizons that I had never thought about.”

– Boris Pramatarov, student of Adobe ico-D Mentorship Program.

The 2015 Adobe ico-D Mentorship program is currently accepting student applications for mentorship or portfolio review. Selected students will be paired with a design professional of similar creative discipline.

The deadline to apply for mentorship is June 19, 2015. Applications may be submitted through the Adobe Design Achievement Awards contest website upon completion of a single contest entry. For more information on the Adobe Ico-D Mentorship Program visit: www.adobeawards.com/us/mentors.

ADAA Honoree Robert Long Continues to Impress

Adobe Design Achievement Awards (ADAA) 2013 finalist Robert Long illustrates our world in subtle and unexpected ways.  Robert’s illustrations blend an authentic natural style with an enlarged hyper-realism, sharing the creatures of our world from his unique perspective.

The ADAA judges were impressed by Robert’s illustrations of insects in 2013, and he continues to impress the critics.

Robert recently won the Edible Community’s Eddy Award for Critics Choice Best Imagery of the Baja, Arizona honey bee. Scientists and farmers in Baja have been studying the population decline of bees and butterflies, and working towards solutions for pollination to help preserve the insects, and our food sources.

Robert commented, “I aim to inspire curiosity in the intricacies of the natural world, and by extension, promote nature conservation.”

Robert added that his ADAA experience has extended his creative network around the globe.

Robert’s most recent illustration commissions have been for magazines; including the April cover for Arizona Alumni Magazine and the Edible Baja Arizona Magazine. Robert has also illustrated for Biosphere2 and aquaculture, with work for a science center next on the horizon.

“When I’m not peering through a magnifying glass, I stay inspired by visiting international natural history museums and aquaria.  A natural curiosity pushes me along, often to places I didn’t expect to be.”

Adobe congratulates Robert for his continued success, and applauds his support for nature conservation through the beauty of his illustrations. We wish all of the students in the ADAA unexpected inspiration and curiosity while building their creative careers.

ADAA Grand Prize Winner Nicolas Ménard on Staying Inspired

Adobe Design Achievement Awards (ADAA) 2014 Grand Prize Winner Nicolas Ménard has been busy these past few months building his career, freelancing, and finding time to create personal projects.

Nicolas was honored by the ADAA judges in 2014 with a Grand Prize in Traditional Media for his illustrated book Elsewhere and his animation short Somewhere won the category of Animation. Both projects were inspired by his early experience of leaving his home in Montreal to study at the Royal College of Art in London. Nicolas is now represented by Nexus Productions in London.

Experimental personal projects have helped Nicolas remain inspired across both his personal and professional work. Nicolas creates indie animated shorts and maintains an online portfolio, in addition to his professional projects. “I’m freelancing in London as an illustrator and animation director, and I work on animation commercials. Between jobs, I keep screen printing and working on personal short films and other projects. I figured out that this seems like the best way to stay inspired.”

How has Nicolas juggled the demands of work and personal projects since graduation? “That’s been the hardest part to figure out after studies: How do I find a balance between personal work and commercial work? And how will that make me happy?  I’ve found that having gaps between jobs allows me time for research and experimentation. This way, I can ensure that my artistic production keeps flourishing.”

We wish Nicolas, and all of the students participating in the ADAA community, to enjoy building and pursuing creative careers while staying inspired along the way. View work by Nicolas Ménard in the ADAA Gallery.

Adobe Design Achievement Awards Winners Go Far

Donica Ida and Bing Zhang are at the beginning of promising careers six months after they each took home an Adobe Design Achievement Award (ADAA) at Adobe MAX.

Donica was completing her MFA at the School of Visual Arts in New York when she submitted her Interactive Media Grand Prize winning piece, “North” to the ADAA contest. The ADAA experience changed her perception of the creative world. “The opportunity to meet and spend time with the other finalists was my favorite part of the experience. Sharing our insecurities about our respective future careers and our mutual excitement for inspired lectures at Adobe MAX made the creative world seem much smaller and less daunting.”

Donica has completed her internship with Pentagram and is now working as a full-time freelance Senior Visual Designer at Critical Mass. Her recent illustrative work explores the theme of life journeys.

Donica added, “I think it’s important for creatives to look at projects from other disciplines, and push themselves towards experimenting with varied mediums. Different experiences and design vantage points, can only lead to a broader source for inspiration and unexpected creative delivery.”

Bing Zhang was studying at California State University Long Beach, when he was honored by the 2014 ADAA judges for his digital publishing entry “Crossroads, A World War II Story”, a narrative piece to view World War II history from numerous perspectives. Bing intentionally creates through many mediums, including web design and photography.

Bing Zhang is currently employed by Walt Disney Studios, working on projects that challenge and inspire him through motion graphics design and post-production.

Bing noted, “Being at Adobe MAX was very fortunate for me. Despite the short period of time, I made good friends whom I am still in contact with. They really inspired me to do more. They remind me that I am a creative individual and I still have my vision to share. And my current employer has noticed, so we had a small celebration as well.”

We look forward to watching the successful careers of Donica, Bing, and all ADAA honorees of the extended creative community for many years to come.
