Join us for a Twitterview with Adobe Connect Evangelist Peter Ryce!

Over the past several months, we’ve had a lot of great conversations with many of you via social channels discussing all aspects of Adobe Connect. We’re excited to continue that ad hoc conversation, of course, but also thought it would be a great time to set up our first Twitterview so we have a focused set of time you can ask and we can answer any and all questions about the product. For those unfamiliar with a Twitterview, it gives you a chance (in real time and over Twitter) to be the interviewer and us to be the interviewee. Join in and you’ll be entered for a chance to win a $50 Amazon gift certificate (North America residents only)! You simply need a Twitter account…and some creativity to point your best questions, including the #AdobeConnect hashtag, @AdobeConnect in 140 characters or less. ;-)

You’re officially invited to join us on Twitter Thursday, May 12, from 10:00 – 10:30 a.m. PST, when our Adobe Connect evangelist and resident expert, Peter Ryce, will host the session. Peter is responsible for Adobe Connect customer education and outreach.  He’s a true expert on the product with a background in several areas like product management, channel support, sales training, and product marketing. He also works to ensure that our own employees best incorporate Adobe Connect into their day-to-day work lives.

So, have you been up at night wondering how to incorporate a Twitter feed into you next Adobe Connect webinar, if it’s possible to attend a web meeting on-the-go from your favorite smartphone or tablet, whether it’s best for you to deploy the product on premise or as a hosted or managed service, or why Peter claims Adobe Connect is the most extensible web conferencing solution and why exactly that’s important? Now’s your chance.

Again, join us on Twitter Thursday 5/12 from 10 – 10:30 a.m. PST and be sure to include the #AdobeConnect hashtag when you tweet @AdobeConnect to get our attention. Also, feel free to ask questions right now in comments to this post or at our Twitter handle with the aforementioned hashtag; we’ll line up answers to them and include as part of the Twitterview.  Again, all Twitterview participants who ask a question and include the hashtag will be entered into a random drawing for a $50 Amazon gift card (North America residents only). So, if you’ve ever had an Adobe Connect question to ask, send it our way!

Our only other request: if you know of others at your company, agency or institution who may want to ask something burning or just follow the Twitter stream to catch a new idea, please feel free to extend our very open invitation.

Cheers!

Adobe Connect Mobile 1.5 for Android Now Available: Tablet Optimization, Two-way Video and More

I’m excited to announce the availability of Adobe Connect Mobile 1.5 for Android smartphones and tablets. This follows the original version of our application for Android, which we made available in October 2010 and discussed in this post. We appreciated all the feedback to version 1.0 and have worked to extend and improve the application further in this latest version. We encourage you to download the free Adobe Connect Mobile 1.5 app from the Android Market today (more on that later).

With this version, the first optimized for Android tablets and with enhancements to be enjoyed on Android smartphones as well, Adobe Connect Mobile gives the mobile user complete confidence to attend meetings from anywhere. With an updated user interface, mobile users will feel more like full meeting participants, and can interact in many of the same ways as someone on a desktop system.

The new release provides an entirely updated interface, which in part includes the following new views and features:

Two-way Video
• Participate in multi-point video conferencing and add your own upstream video broadcast to the conversation.

Meeting Overview and Focus View Options

• In Meeting Overview, watch all the activities happening in the meeting at once.
• Tap or navigate to focus in on any one meeting activity like the slide presentation or screen share.
• Focus on an activity to enter your input in Chat, Private Chat, and Polls.
• While in Focus View, instant notifications help you stay current with off-screen activities that may need your attention, like new or private chat messages. Tap to focus on new activities directly from these notifications.

Check out this video to see me demo some of the new features, including those I’ve described above.

Adobe Connect Mobile 1.5 is available here in the Android Market for users whose devices meet the minimum system prerequisites. Adobe AIR 2.6 for Android (or later) is required, as is Android 2.2/FroYo (or later). A list of mobile devices that meet the AIR system requirements can be found here.

Remember, we also have an Adobe Connect Mobile application for Apple iOS devices; you can find version 1.0.5 on iTunes Preview here. The app will be updated to version 1.5 soon, so please stay tuned to us on this blog and Twitter.

For more information on the Adobe Connect Mobile client, as well as user commentary, visit our Adobe Connect Mobile User Forum on connectusers.com.

As always, we’re interested in hearing from you—in comments, on our mobile user forum, and on Twitter @AdobeConnect.

Cheers,
Randah McKinnie, Principal Product Manager

More Leads At Lower Cost

There are a number of different reasons we’re seeing more marketing organizations choose webinars for their lead generation activities.  Certainly cost is one of the biggest factors when compared to in-person events, but customers also tell us that they are able to reach a larger, more geographically diverse audience with an online event.  It also makes it easier to secure speakers when activities like travel aren’t necessary.

Moving an event online though makes it more difficult for a speaker to really engage with his or her audience.  You lose the two-way eye contact and you can’t read the body language of the participants.  For these reasons, it becomes absolutely critical to leverage rich media and provide interaction during the event to ensure everyone stays connected and engaged.

In the video below, I walk through some of product features that make Adobe Connect the best technology platform for delivering marketing webinars and measuring your success.

What Makes for a Great Learning Experience?

Is it the content, the environment, the instructor or facilitator, your peers, expert speakers, best practices, a sense of community, opportunities to network, is it what you actually learn & take away, or what you end up applying after the fact? When you think of powerful learning experiences, what do you remember most?

Often it’s not just one thing, but rather a harmony of many components, all working well together, often by design. Learning is a sophisticated experience that requires sophisticated design in order to be effective. This is particularly true when we design for virtual learning environments. It’s easy to gauge engagement when you can see your learner’s eyes sitting before you in a classroom. It’s not so easy when your learners are spread out globally across multiple time zones, all participating virtually in a synchronous event.

Last week we presented at ASTD’s TechKnowledge 2011 conference. Our presentation Foundations of Leadership: A Blended-Learning Approach to Building A Leadership Pipeline highlighted some of our best practices for driving engagement in virtual learning. The virtual learning component of our Foundations of Leadership program is administered entirely leveraging the superior instructional capability of Adobe Connect. We’d like to share a summary of best practices from our presentation, which focus on operational excellence from both program and virtual-learning-experience perspectives.

Practice Makes Perfect. When you’re scheduling across multiple time zones, it’s a good idea to perform a few dry-runs prior to your scheduled event to ensure everything works properly, your partners on the ground locally (if you have them) are prepared, and to get a general sense of timing and flow. Spend your run-though focusing on transitions between technology and presentation content to ensure things look/act the way you imagined them. Think about a contingency plan in case you experience any difficulty with your presentation. Will you have a back-up deck preloaded separately or will you be ready to screen share locally? Think about learning continuity and for critical content ask, “What will I do if…?”

Strength in Numbers. Have a team help you administer/execute the session. We’ve found this to be extremely helpful to ensuring a quality learning experience. Giving your instructor/facilitator the room to focus on delivering the content and staying on time/target ensures your learners won’t miss anything critical, but it also lessens the cognitive load for having your facilitator simultaneously manage learner collaboration with content presentation. Having a dedicated chat monitor/moderator can streamline Q&A time as well. Teach your chat monitor how to consolidate questions/themes so your time spent answering questions and discussing is optimized. Where possible, also think about enlisting a dedicated technical representative to help troubleshoot basic user issues behind the scenes.

Subject Matter Networks. When you’re delivering global virtual learning, you can’t expect to have all the answers. At conception, consider forming a diverse cross-functional advisory council to help you drive momentum and get consensus on critical decision points along the way. This is a great way to build community around your project, grow credibility & buy-in, build program evangelists and provide status updates while you drive to execution. Try to get local representation from each location you plan to serve with your program and most importantly, make participation in the council accessible, which may mean late nights, early mornings and/or duplicate meetings to serve your colleagues overseas.

Baby Steps are Big Steps. You may not be an expert at delivering virtual learning now, but practice and practice again. Start by leveraging Adobe Connect for virtual collaboration with your team, and where possible, try first with a simple peer-to-peer experience with a colleague who’s also eager to learn the solution as well. Getting comfortable with the power & nuances of the platform will give you the confidence to build up to delivering virtual learning globally. Consider a hybrid approach to your weekly team meetings as a way to build capability and confidence in your team as you transition to the instructional capabilities of Adobe Connect.

I Approve This Message. Ships don’t sail themselves. Building a world-class development program requires world-class sponsorship. Ensuring executive sponsorship for your program sends a message to all potential participants (and their managers) that learning is not only important, but valued, by your company’s senior leadership. Hopefully you know the micro-celebrities that have huge political capital across your organization – ask them to sponsor your initiative at conception. Work on your elevator pitch once you’ve honed your idea into something that has clear momentum with your team. Focus on critical business objectives and explain how your learning initiative will help address them.

We’d love to learn about successes—and challenges—around delivering virtual learning, too! What are your best practices and tips for driving learner engagement and delivering an effective virtual learning experience? Let us know in comments.

The Enterprise 2.0 Conference is a forum for business and IT leaders to focus on building more agile and productive business cultures through the use of tools and technologies. Adobe is pleased to be a Gold Sponsor of the Enterprise 2.0 Conference , which is being held November 2-5, 2009. “Unlocking the business value of Enterprise 2.0″ is the theme of this year’s inaugural San Francisco version of the conference. In his keynote address on November 3rd, Rob Tarkoff, Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Business Productivity Solutions group at Adobe Systems, will talk about the Customer-Driven Enterprise and what the future of customer interactions will look like. Adobe will also be making some exciting announcements at the show. I’ll be there and hope you will too!
In addition to the keynote, Adobe has a booth in the joint VoiceCon/Enterprise 2.0 Expo Pavillion on Tuesday, November 3rd and Wednesday, November 4th from noon til 5pm. We’ll have Connect Pro and Adobe Livecycle ES product experts and demo stations. Be sure to stop by booth #722 to discuss with us our solutions and to see them in action. Clay Shirky to Speak at the Adobe Learning Summit Nov 9 ’09

Don’t miss the chance to attend the Adobe Learning Summit in San Jose this November 9th, 2009. As a long time elearning professional I’m particularly excited about our guest keynote speaker, Clay Shirky.
I recently had the honor to discuss with Mr. Shirky some of the collaborative technology topics that I believe are of interest to us as learning and collaboration professionals. In preparation for his address, we discussed impressions and questions I’ve heard from elearning professionals and have experienced myself. For example, we have all been talking up ‘web 2.0′, blogs, wikis, RSS feeds and the like for years now, and have even started to see some great examples of how these have accelerated knowledge transfer within and across groups. But how does that really apply to us as learning professionals? Should we embrace these technologies just because we hear they are the latest and greatest? How can we determine whether they might work for our purposes, and if so, where should we get started? And finally, if we do provide the tools for a more social and collaborative learning environment, how do we know the users will embrace them? Is there a way to seed the community, or drive motivation to help our communities evolve and provide valuable knowledge transfer – or more – for our organizations?
With those questions in mind, and with an extensive knowledge of and passion for learning and technology, I am certain Mr Shirky’s talk will be memorable for those of us lucky enough to be there to hear him speak. Join us for this exciting keynote speech to kick off a value-packed day, created just for learning professionals at the Adobe Learning Summit.
Clay Shirky’s Biography:
Clay Shirky is a writer, educator, and consultant on the social and economic effects of Internet technologies. In his new book, “Here Comes Everybody”, Clay explores how organizations and industries are being upended by open networks, collaboration, and user appropriation of content production and dissemination. In this highly engaging keynote presentation, Mr. Shirky will explore these trends in light of how they impact our efforts as learning professionals.

Announcing the Adobe Learning Summit – Nov 9th

We recently announced details for the Adobe Learning Summit coming to San Jose November 9th. This is an annual event where we share ideas and successes from our customers and partners, our vision for eLearning as well as roadmaps for products and solutions for eLearning professionals. The summit features around two dozen sessions from Adobe customers like Xerox, Intel, Franklin Covey, Thomson Reuters, San Diego State University, Constellation Wines, and the Florida Department of Law Enforcement along with several Adobe Product Managers and other experts in Adobe eLearning tools and solutions.
I’m personally very excited to welcome Clay Shirky as our keynote speaker. Clay is a professor at NYU and a prominent writer, educator, and consultant on the social and economic effects of Internet technologies (you might see him quoted a lot right now in the general press regarding Twitter and the impact within Iran). In his new book, “Here Comes Everybody”, Clay explores how organizations are being upended by open networks, collaboration, and the ease of content production and dissemination afforded to individuals due to the internet. I recently finished his book and recommend it to anyone interested in eLearning or collaboration; very applicable to anyone with an interest in knowledge sharing. I can’t remember the last time I had three pages of notes from a book I ostensibly read for “fun”.
Additional information can be found here: http://www.adobe.com/go/als. Hope to see you there.

See Obama Live in Connect Pro

We’ve gotten a lot of good feedback on our earlier post about Sec. of State Hillary Clinton and US President Barack Obama using Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro for public-facing web events. Several recordings of these sessions are available on the US Department of State’s YouTube and Facebook accounts (never knew your US Federal bureaucracies were so with it, eh?) that you can check out.

http://www.facebook.com/pages/CoNx-See-the-World/26365096875
President Obama even has a live event scheduled on Connect Pro for next week on June 4th, live from Egypt in which he will deliver a speech on the future of Muslim/U.S. relations:

The US Department of State uses one of our partners, ConnectSolutions, to manage their implementation (aka managed services), and seem to be using the product with great effect.
