We got approval on the latest version of Adobe Ideas today, and immediately pushed it live. This version responds to a lot of the most common requests we’ve been hearing, like make all of the tool settings easily available, make the app universal, and allow more layers. For a full list, check out the iTunes page or search Adobe Ideas in iTunes.

So, what about Layers?? We’re trying out a new approach to adding functionality in the app without making it overly complex. Additional draw layers can now be added by purchasing an optional feature. For $4.99 (US price) you can use up to 10 drawing layers + a photo layer for each of your ideas. If you don’t purchase, you still get all of the other features in the app, including 1 draw layer and 1 photo layer. Personally, I think that in-app purchase of advanced features like this will be a great way to keep the app free for a broad audience and make more functionality available for people who want it and are willing to pay for it.

I really like this update, and iI with the in-app purchase thing… but wait, it’s not an update: it’s a new app. I mean, i didn’t see Adobe Ideas 1.1 as an update, i searched and downloaded it and, of course, all my Ideas are on the old version of the app (that is still on the iPhone)

    • By david macy - 3:55 PM on November 8, 2010   Reply

      Hi Marco,
      Here’s the scoop:
When we built the 1.0 version, we made separate apps for iPhone and iPad. We probably should not have done that, but that’s another story.
Version 1.1 is a Universal App, meaning that it can run on iPhone or iPad (and iPod Touch btw). We couldn’t provide it as an update to both of the existing versions, so we had to choose one. We decided to make 1.1 as an update to the 1.0 iPad version and that’s why it doesn’t show as an update on your iPhone.

So, what about all of your old content? For now, keep it. We’re working on another update that will allow you to migrate the content from the old 1.0 iPhone app into the new app.

All a bit messy, but hopefully that makes sense!

When will text input be available?

    • By david macy - 8:38 PM on November 8, 2010   Reply

Charles, can you talk a bit more about what you’re looking to do with text? For example, do you need font selection and typography controls or just simple text input for notes?

      • By Tobias - 1:52 PM on November 9, 2010   Reply

Both. Maybe simple text input for notes inside the basic app and font selection and typography controls as an in-app purchase.

I also would love the addition of text – and I would like to be able to use different fonts…. The app Strip Designer allows users to install and add fonts from partner websites, like Blambot…. Could be another in app purchase feature!

A basic font would be good to start. I just need to be able to resize it. Thanks in advance.

My only wish for a next release will be a simple text tool to do slight annotations (I’m using it to do roughs for print design, and avoiding to retype an adress is a basic example)…
For my own use, basic text would be perfect.

Anyway, great job ! Truly one of my favorites apps on iPad ! Thanks.

Arpan – yes, it’s in the 1.1 version of the app… you can send an idea via email or ‘save it to an album’ in your Photos app.

I was telling a friend of mine that I wish Adobe used in-app purchases in things like Photoshop, so that people can get the base functionality, and then pay for the features they need and don’t need. That aside, I’ve been waiting for these updates and I’m happy Adobe is charging, so that I know there is a business incentive to keep up the great work!

    • By david macy - 6:56 AM on November 11, 2010   Reply

If you have both your iPad and iPhone on the same iTunes account, you do not have to pay twice. There are two way to get Layers onto the second device and neither one will charge you:
      1. Go to the Settings screen and tap the button Recover My Purchase.
      2. Go through the same process you would normally do to buy Layers. If you’ve already paid on your iTunes account, at the end of the purchase process the store will display a message that says you’ve already purchased the feature.

Very very good App! Excellent jobs, you guys! I would like to mention a question about purchasing the advanced feature ‘Draw Layers’ – when I buy apps at Apple Apps Store through iTunes, each license of every individual app is covering for up to FIVE devices with the same iTunes account (share / download the same apps with up to FIVE devices using the same iTunes account). In my case, I have four iPads at home (one for each family member – me, my wife and two kids). Three iPads share the same account of mine (not the one for my wife) and in those three iPads, all the installed apps are identically the same in which I pay for one license for each single app only. So, will it be the same that I only have to pay for one license for the ‘Draw Layers’ and three of my iPads (with same iTunes account) can enjoy the advanced feature (in other words, how many devices does the license cover?)? Thank you very much.

Sorry for my poor English since I am not a native English speaker. Thanks a lot.

      Hi Andrew,
You can purchase Layers once and use it on all five of the devices connected to the same iTunes account. Install the 1.1 version of Adobe Ideas on each device, then go ahead and make the purchase through one of them. After that, go into the settings screen in Adobe Ideas on the other devices and tap Recover My Purchase.

enjoy and please share your ideas.

    Hi .
I’ve been looking for a note taking and mind mapping tool like this for a long time.
As I like freehand note taking and drawing this the best tool I faund.
But, if you put these few features in Ideas, I’m prepared to pay extra:
    - selecting and moving (copy/paste,scaling , rotate ?) objects
(we got kind of grouping with layers …), this would help a lot with organizing
    inside bigger notes
    - add hyperlinks to object or group of objects ( to external URL, other note, local file ?)
this would be killer app for me since this would make Ideas my dream app for
mind mapping and note taking, it would combine two worlds, freehand sketching and
linking my ideas to outside world ( outside my note ). This would gain much more than
adding possibility of importing/adding/recording multimedia files like pictures and audio
files which can be found in other note/idea apps. There is no freehand semi-vector drawing
app with possibility of adding hyperlinks (this feature is very rare anyway).

        • By squirrell - 12:06 PM on November 18, 2010   Reply

I would say an object is a distinct area of colour or a line within a single layer – does that make sense?

    • By David Macy - 8:06 AM on November 18, 2010   Reply

The Hyperlinks idea is very interesting Edvard. Tell me a bit more about how you imagine it would work. How would you set a hyperlink? How would you tap on it (and distinguish that tap from a drawing stroke) When you tap would it launch Safari or show browser content inside of Adobe Ideas?

  • By Edvard Pohl - 2:43 PM on November 18, 2010   Reply

    Hi.

This is what I’d like to see regarding hyperlinks in this already great app :

    Hyperlinks
Hyperlinks in notes are active only when in “read” mode ( or when hyperlinks
layer is active). But their greatest value will be when that note gets exported
and opened as pdf in Adobe Acrobat for iPad :)
( and how cool tool would it be to have Acrobat+Ideas app on iPad ? )

    Hyperlink types:
To another note, zoomed to some “tag” in a note.
To some PDF document in iPad . To note or bookmark in that pdf document.
To URL which is opened in Safari.
To any other registered object which can be opened with registered app for that type of object/file.  ( that is fantasy, I know, but that is how it should be :) )

Hyperlinks could be attached to :

A – Objects. Hyperlink sensitive area is at least double than
width of line. So clicking on a word will surely work ..
This is good only for hand written text, plane areas should
be solved with hyperlink planes or solution B ?
“Hyperlink area view” displays all hyperlink sensitive areas
in different color (glowing?). In this mode touching on link activate link
edit menu over link. Not usable without object grouping option.
Using more-than-two fingers gestures to get in “hylink area view/edit”
    mode would be nice.
    Definitions ( in case A )
Simple object – stroke ( which gets deleted in one undelete )
Object – one or group of simple objects , strokes
Grouping methods – select tool ? , object pick tool ?

B – Planes on “hyperlinks layer”. This layer is intended for
placing invisible square or elliptical planes over existing note and adding
different types of hyperlinks to them. Hyperplanes are of course editable
and visible only when this layer is “active”.

C – Text. Not that nice, but the simplest solution.

I’ll be more than happy to brainstorm this further if that helps implementing
    hyperlinks in Ideas ..

More draw layers was a great idea, but when will more photo layers be added?

  • By Kyle DeHaven - 2:17 PM on November 22, 2010   Reply

It would be great to be able to edit pdf files.

Multipage pdf files would be fantastic, but probably unrealistic. I understand this is probably more an issue of ipad file system (or lack thereof), but possibly a workaround by interfacing with dropbox or some other app that the pdf’s can be found in for editing. T

he intention is review of architectural drawings, with both graphic and text markups. We are currently using this app for this purpose, but have been having issues with the ipad rescaling jpegs that pass through the photo library, loosing both quality and scale. It seems like non-native formats like pdf would solve this issue, since the ipad will not know how to “optimize” them. Definitely willing to pay for this increased functionality. If you guys are considering something like an acrobat mobile app, a background adobe file system app could be very helpful to interface directly with shared storage spaces (either adobe hosted, dropbox, link thru to ftp, whatever).

it would also be great to have the ability to move files in and out of ideas with layers, but i think getting files in will require a back door solution for the near future.

Or I could be way off on how all this works, in which case just read the part about opening/editing/sharing pdf files.

    Thanks.

A great start to this app. Have purchased the layers option and it works nicely. Was a little disappointed to still only have one image layer though.

Here’s what I think is definitely missing and would love to see:

    - Resize/Rotate image (it would be amazing to take a screenshot of a website in Safari, and import into Ideas – except the orientation and size is incorrect and I can’t change that!)
    - Multiple image layers
    - Add text (needs colour and size parameters at least)

Over and above that it would awesome to have

    - Delete object (e.g. delete a line by touching it – better than undoing everything you did after drawing that line/placing that object)
    - Erase parts of image
    - Annotations (saved as PDF annotations)

I don’t currently have an iPad but I’m considering getting one. But what I need to know first, can this app open files at all? Like pdf or ai files? I’m a graphic designer and I work from my iMac at home, but sometimes I need something more portable, but not the performance or price of a Macbook.

But if I have a pdf of a logo, I need to be able to open it up to show the client, and then quickly make simple edits. Or, I’m visiting family for the weekend, I don’t want to pack up my 27″ computer and haul it with me two hours away. But I still need to be able to work. Is there anyway to do this, or should I just buy a laptop?

Alternatively, is there any chance there will Illustrator app anytime? Honestly, that’s what I really need.

    • By David Macy - 8:51 AM on November 29, 2010   Reply

      Hi Kelsey,
Adobe Ideas will not allow you to make edits to an Illustrator file. The closest you can get is to export the Illustrator file as a png and place that into the photo layer in Adobe Ideas. Then you can mark up on top of the png, but you can’t edit anchor points or change colors or any other edits to the original Illustrator content. I don’t know of any other apps for iPad that can do what you’re looking for , so I’d say that your best bet for bringing your Illustrator work on the road is a laptop. Hope that helps.

Hi, my app crashes when I try to show/hide (or do anything within the layers menu). I have bought the extra Layers option, and is frankly a bit dissapointing.

Also, why does the pdf-export/mail option transform strokes/lines into fills? This severely limits Ideas compatibility with Illustrator and Flash. If the strokes where maintained as strokes in the export (like Quills, which sadly lacks the import image function), Adobe Ideas would perhaps be the best vector drawing/tracing app there is. Any updates would be greatly appreciated.

    • By david macy - 8:47 AM on January 6, 2011   Reply

      Mark,
What version of iOS are you running? We haven’t heard of other people having the crashing problem. You may want to try deleting the app and reinstalling it (you will not be charged again as long as you use the same iTunes account).
As for strokes vs. filled paths, we chose to make the drawing tool in Adobe Ideas work like the Blob Brush tool that is in Illustrator CS4 and CS5 because it is more intuitive than other vector drawing tools. I say this mainly because of the way it interacts with the eraser. You’ll notice if you draw with a large brush size, you can go back with the eraser and erase along edges of the shape. This is not the case with tools like the pencil or pen tool in Illustator, which can be very frustrating because of the fact that the path you draw is somewhat independent of the appearance that you actually see.

  • By Mark Dunner - 4:10 PM on January 6, 2011   Reply

I will try reinstalling Ideas, though I am on the latest OS on a recently purchased iPad.
Oh, if I upgrade to CS 4 or 5 the imported pdf will be retained as a stroke (I am currently only on CS3). I haven’t used the Blob brush yet, but from googling it, it looks as if it still a stroke but appearing as joined paths.

    • By David Macy - 9:32 AM on January 11, 2011   Reply

Hi Mark, I didn’t mean to say that CS4 or 5 would keep strokes when opening Adobe Ideas files. What I meant is that the drawing tool in Adobe Ideas works like the Blob Brush in CS4 or 5 – meaning it automatically expands to create filled shapes instead of strokes. The reason this is useful (and intuitive) for drawing is that you can immediately work with the eraser and it will do what you expect it to do. I hope that makes sense.

Layers are a big disappointment and almost worthless.
Layers need to be scalable and separately movable
What’s the matter at Adobe’s end on this?
The main purpose of layers is to make big sketches
that can be reduced to small intricate ones, placed anywhere
by independent translations. It’s simpler than the lasso tool
and more versatile. Charging $5 for the layers without basic
features of layers might please the programmers who don’t do
graphics, but it’s a terrible waste for those who do.

Interesting perspective John. I agree that this is one possible use of layers, but I don’t think it is the main one. Anyway, you’ll be happy to know that layer transformations are on the way (and you won’t have to pay for the feature again to get them).

I recently loaded Ideas 1.1, and after playing with it for a few days I bought the layers feature. I really like what I’m seeing so far. I am looking for a tool that would allow relatively quick sketches of landscape designs (just rough ideas…sections of a plan, not the whole plan) I can show to perspective clients to shorten iterations in the design process.

A few features I’d really like to see…

    1. Text. Don’t need anything fancy.
    2. Zoom indicator … Something that displays the zoom level ( e.g. 25%) up in the corner somewhere.
    3. Ability to delete a previous step without needing to delete all steps performed after the offending step.
    4. Ability to change order of layers.
    5. Simple file management – even if it is just something similar to how app icons are arranged on the iPad screen, including the ability of making folders by dragging one file over another.

Great app, look forward to future improvements.

Love this app, its the one really simple but decent app for designers.

I’ve recently upgraded from the iPad to an iPad 2, and reinstalled Adobe Ideas, and don’t have Layers. Do I have to pay for this again? Please tell me I don’t.

    • By David Macy - 7:04 AM on March 28, 2011   Reply

Apple keeps a record of your purchase. You should be able to go into settings in Adobe Ideas and tap Restore My Purchase. If that doesn’t show up, then just go through the normal purchase process – once it accesses the iTunes store, it will show that you have already purchased.

With the latest app update this is now possible. Brilliant.

        Thank you.

Just to piggy back on my earlier post about suggested upgrades.

My reason for wanting a zoom indicator is so that I can draw consistently sized objects when I draw them while zoomed in. So, if I want to draw circles representing 5 gallon plants, and I need to zoom up close to draw them, I want something that helps me to draw them all the same size without having to zoom back out to check.

I thought of another, more effective way to give me what I’d like to see – a background grid. Why not allow the option of choosing a background grid pattern for one of the layers? In the layers tool simply provide a check box to choose a grid layer. If a grid layer is chosen, then provide some options such as grid type (quad, orthogonal…), grid spacing, and color/opacity. A background grid (or foreground if I choose to move the payer to the top) would help me bang out a roughly scaled drawing, and create appropriately scaled objects within the drawing no matter the zoom level I choose. It would even lessen my need for text capability, because I would be much more consistent with text size if I have a grid background as a reference.

Grid + file management = happy me

Excellent app, however I really need text input. Most of the ideas I have need some kind of text annotation and it’s terrible to have to hand-write (touch?) a paragraph worth of text. Very surprised text input is not included, definitely a must for future updates.

to add on to the question about having to repurchase the layers add on, if I purchased it on my iPad, do I have to pay again on my iPhone?

    • By David Macy - 9:05 PM on April 2, 2011   Reply

No, your purchase applies to any iDevice you have on the same iTunes account.

Good but with a few tweaks this could be the best app on the iPad. Come on please add multiple photo layers. And more merging features. So many people would buy it!!!!!!

After playing a bit more with this app creating rough sketches of landscape design ideas, there is another upgrade I really wish this app had. I would love to have a symbol library. I would like to create a number of independent sketches (a cluster of five 3-gallon shrubs, a specimen tree, etc) and have the ability to quickly import these “symbols” into another sketch, with the ability of placing, sizing and rotating the symbol within the new sketch. This would allow me to create very quick and good looking design ideas to prospective clients (assuming I’ve spent the time to build up an assortment of symbols).

I would probably want to import many symbols into the same sketch with the ability to place each of them independently, so either the number of available layers would need to increase dramatically (to the point of making layer management an issue), or an “import” layer could be created that allows temporary landing of imported sketches until placement, size and orientation have been established at which time the sketch is transferred to another layer of choice (and thereby clearing the “import” layer for the next import). File management would be a must to manage a potentially large number of symbols files. I mentioned a background grid layer previously – perhaps this grid layer could also serve as the “import” layer to assist import symbol landing, placement and transfer to another layer.

Here is how I would envision my work flow.

    1. Create an image file representing the plot plan (property lines, outline of house and other structures). Import this to my new sketch as the photo layer.
    2. With the grid layer turned on, create a base layer sketch to outline landscape and hardscape design using a light, thin translucent line.
    3. Start importing symbols from my “library” to represent shrubs and trees over baseline sketch. Import symbol into grid layer, drag to appropriate location, size and rotate as necessary. Select “transfer to another layer” button, then select appropriate layer, and complete transfer. Repeat for all symbols.
    4. Draw additional details such as turf areas, pathways, mulched areas.
    5. Arrange layer order as necessary.
    6. Turn off the grid layer, turn off baseline sketch.
    7. Show to client.
    8. Win job.
    9. Write glowing reviews of Adobe Ideas

    Hey,

I would like to know, before I buy this app, if it can import PDFs… I am an architect and in our office we export a lot in PDF. When I travel I get my iPad along in order to be able to sketch over layouts they send me to review… I didn’t find an answer about this topic.
So, can I open a PDF layout just the way I open a pic from photos and just sketch on it?

    Thanks,
    MP

    • By David Macy - 7:32 PM on May 15, 2011   Reply

Paul, Adobe Ideas doesn’t import PDF, so you’ll have to get the file into an image format in the photo library before you can import it. Sorry.

    Hey David,

Thank you for your answer. Any plans for that in the near future?

Adobe ideas is great tool, so, I bought extra layer in ver 1.1. (600yen).
It is installed in 1st iPad.

Yesterday, I bought iPad2 and synced with iTunes, all contents of adobe ideas was
copied. But the function of extra layer was not available in iPad2!

I have a plan to give my old iPad to other person.

Do I have to buy extra layer again?

    • By David Macy - 9:01 PM on May 17, 2011   Reply

Go into the settings screen an tap “Restore my purchase” (sorry I don’t know the Japanese translation). As long as you use the same iTunes account it will allow you to have Layers without paying again.

I,m looking forward to other extentions, such as copy&paste :-)

On the product management front, great work David Macy. Nice to see such quick and honest responses without any spin. This gives me lots of confidence that the product will continue to evolve in the right directions.

the case may I cancel it?

Paolo, I think you may have posted this question to the wrong blog. This blog is about Adobe Ideas, not iStudiez Pro.

Does anyone know how to make the image, which is imported into the Adobe Ideas photo layer, fill the whole of the white space available? I can only ever get the imported image to fill the centre portion of the white space, about one sixth of the area. I have tried very large to very small pixel counts but the resultant image stays the same size when imported.

    • By David Macy - 8:06 AM on July 18, 2011   Reply

You can use the Move tool (the 4 pointed arrow that is hidden under the hand tool) to resize the layer.

        David

Thanks very much for response, I will try that.

I am very impressed with the ease of use and simplicity of Adobe Ideas.

I have been trying to promote it with my employers for replacing field work tasks, normally done by hand sketching on paper plans, due to the speed and features available.

Lastly I would encourage you to maintain the simplicity of the concept as that is the appeal for me, any further features can be accomodated by Illustrator etc.

I’ve just started using the Adobe Ideas app and I’m essentially trying to get any kind of numerical colour value out of it. Whether CMYK or RGB. Does anyone know how to do this? I’ve taken a photo, selected the part of it that I want to use colour-wise but I don’t know how to translate this into something I can use in other apps without, e.g., emailing it to myself and bringing it up in Photoshop. Thanks for any help.

The biggest feature gap is clean text – my finger writing is horrible and I use it to quickly draw and communicate ideas – I’m no trained artist – but look at what prezi has done – it’s a perfect model for adobe ideas – a few simple choices to do in layer or separate layer annotations or even regular art text,

from there if it could be an OCR from other images or websites or just my finger writing then the text feature could be less intrusive to the use.

People would pay for font options! I could beta test it with 10 users in no time in my group!

Pleas e,please, please!!!!! I may even quite using email and just use Ideas solely to communicate!!!!!

1 – purchased from iTunes for $5.99 thinking that was the “premium version” with 10 layers included. Additional layers were not included. This should be clarified to avoid confusion.

2 – A user guide PDF would be VERY helpful.

3 – Some sort of highlight area showing the eraser size would be helpful.

I’d so much rather be drawing and talking about drawing. Gotta say instead though, I’m with JackD. Adobe Ideas on my iPad says I need to buy the app the Layers feature is for before I can buy the feature. Regrant failed. iTunes says I already bought it. Do I need to “Gift” myself with another app? Nah. Don’t think so. Obviously I already bought it or I wouldn’t have a Buy Layers button.
Common Adobe folks. Help make this about IDEAS and not tedious commercial nonsense.

Where is this update for ANDROID 4.0? For $10 for the app I would hope that you could at least upgrade the use of layering. This app is practically useless until it has layering capability. Please let someone know.

I recently bought Photoshop Touch for Android and have been pleased. I was looking for something like Sketchpad Pro but with a larger canvas so I looked into Ideas. I was ready to buy until I saw the price tag, complaints and lack of layers support.

Can you please give us an ETA or at least confirmation that additional layers will be available? Maybe release a tablet version? I’d buy it today if I knew an update was in the works.

I’ve got a quad core tablet and every drawing program is crippled for the lowest common denominator. For a $10 app, this is far too limited. I expect more from Adobe.

I have been using layers in adobe ideas 1.1 for a longggg time and just got an new iPad 3rd generation. When I go to my older work to change some things it won’t let me use my layers. First it tells me I have to buy layers and then it says I don’t own the app. So I went to settings to recover my purchase and it says I don’t own it. I love this app – what is going on? How do I get my layers back?

  • By Kathyanne White - 5:27 PM on March 18, 2012   Reply

Oops a I said 1.1 I really have 1.2 and I just tried deleting it and putting it back on my iPad and it still wants me to buy layer, then says I don’t own it buy it, but it won’t let me buy it because it is installed- guess I don’t get to use adobe ideas tonight.

  • By Sparky - 7:26 AM on April 2, 2012   Reply

I would really love it if you brought back the opacity feature where you could control the opacity denseness while it was on the layer. So one could completly cover a picture with a solid color and then reduce the density of the color to see the picture behind it. This was one of my main reasons for loving Adobe Ideas and I believe many other usrers would agree.

This app is my choice for sketching mindmaps, but these couple things are really needed to this app work efficiently

The most important thing this app needs is
-Lasso tool -> moving, scaling, rotating, objects. This is a must!!! (helps organizing bigger notes like complex mindmaps)

-Zoom indicator, displays the zoom level % plus opt. grid on/off
    -wrist protection
-text input with just couple nice fonts (like ereaders have), that can be adjusted with lasso tool (scaling, moving, rotating)

Using Adobe Ideas on iPad and like it alot, allows us to pick a color and easily paint a new yard over older dead grass from a photo, while we are seeing our prespective new client. But there is a major drawback, we need to be able to pick up the texture with the color. Can anyone tell me if there is any way to pick up the texture of picture, not just the color? We really need to get texture with the color or the product is pretty useless. We need the simplicy and speed of Ideas, but without the texture we may be back to square one.
