Acrobat-Swiss Army Knife of Software

Many times I refer to Acrobat as a Swiss Army Knife? Why? Like a Swiss Army Knife you need to have it with you always, it can help you in emergencies, and is a tool you can use daily. I use Acrobat daily in my work, even prior to joining Adobe. Many times it has been my life saver as I needed to edit a PDF file that no one could find the original document. Enter Acrobat, as my emergency rescue, I just export the PDF to Word and begin editing.

In state and local government, I find they use Acrobat the way we sometimes use a Swiss Army knife. We get out the knife blade or in Acrobat’s case the Create PDF blade and we forget there are other tools in Acrobat. In our post today I would like to explore some of the other uses of Acrobat or its other blades.

Lessons We Can Learn from the Big Game

This weekend was, of course, a huge event–so if you didn’t hear, the groundhog predicted an early spring this year!

But there was also another big event this weekend as well that you may have watched with several billion of your closest friends. Whatever team you rooted for (and whatever you thought of the game’s outcome), it had some lessons that we can all learn from. Here are a few:

Honoring veterans by improving benefits claims processes and information access

This week, with the commemoration of Veterans Day in the US (and Remembrance Day in Canada), we honored those who have selflessly served in our country’s military with honor and distinction so that the freedoms we cherish may endure.

As a veteran of the US Coast Guard,  I am proud to highlight a few of the ways that Adobe is collaborating with Veteran Affairs agencies in North America to improve access for disabled veterans and modernize administrative operations. In many cases, due to gains in efficiency, some resources may be reallocated to the actual care of the veterans these agencies are committed to serve.

 

  • Streamlining workflows for management of benefits claims

US and Canadian VA agencies, including the US Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA), have standardized on multiple Adobe solutions, like LiveCycle for BPM, transforming processes to collect, track, and automate the millions of benefits claims they receive every year.

The organizations have since reported reduced data error rates and significant improvements in efficiency throughout their enterprises, achieving the simple goals of fewer administrative delays and more timely service delivery for our veterans.

  • Extending usability of veterans’ health records and other critical information

Considering that most systems of record were implemented before today’s mobile revolution, it’s no surprise that many of them do not natively support remote usability of enterprise information and multi-channel functionality for self-service apps.

Adobe Acrobat is widely used throughout the public sector, in federal as well as state and local governments, to harness the power of the ubiquitous PDF file format. Yesterday, Adobe marked a new milestone with the release of Acrobat version 11!

Adobe @ the 2011 Print and ePublishing Conference

The 2011 Print and ePublishing Conference in Alexandria, VA brought together 400+ graphic artists, visual information specialists, design and creative production managers from around the world for 3 days of learning, networking and swapping valuable industry tricks and tips. This year, a large number of US Government agencies were in attendance, including personnel from the National Science Foundation, the Department of Veteran Affairs, Internal Revenue Service, Department of State, NASA, the Defense Media Activity, the Social Security Administration, the Department of Energy, the US Office of Personnel Management, and many others.

Adobe presented multiple sessions during this conference, including an introduction to What’s New in Creative Suite 5.5 as well as a focused, day-long seminar entitled Designing for the Multiscreen Revolution: HTML5, CSS3 and the Flash Platform (.pdf). Over 300 customers attended these sessions, proving the industry hunger for best practices and tools to move them forward into the new territory of multiscreen design.

One of the hottest topics at this conference included best practices in designing for the ePub format, which is rapidly emerging as the industry standard for distribution of electronic books. As we’ve seen recently in the press, Amazon.com announced that their digital book sales have now exceeded sales of all print titles, both hardcover and paperback combined. As of April 1st, for every 100 print books that Amazon has sold (of any kind) the company moved 105 Kindle books, not including downloads of free titles. As we’ve also seen this year from multiple publishing analysts, 60% of Americans are expected to purchase a tablet device for reading purposes within the next three years. That’s over 150 million Americans! Almost every session in the 3-day outline included some form of ePub or eBook production tutorial, as publishers across the spectrum expect an explosion of devices and reading options for consumers and constituents very soon.

We were also especially honored to have Victoria Richards from SSA co-present with Greg Pisocky of Adobe Accessibility on how the new features inside InDesign CS5.5 help simplify and streamline the creation of 508-compliant PDF documents. And if you’re thinking to yourself, “I wish I’d been in that Accessibility session!” — there’s some good news for you: coming very soon on Adobe TV, we’re posting a 2-part series on all the great new workflow enhancements and productivity features that will cut your PDF remediation time from days to minutes! Adobe Government U.K.: New webinar on Delivering and Designing Intuitive Online Services

How can we address digital exclusion and encourage the mass channel shift to low cost online service delivery that we all need?

Digital Champion, Martha Lane Fox, is calling for ‘e’ Revolution not Evolution with online becoming “the first point of contact” for public services. And the new Government ICT strategy states that the government “will work to make citizen-focused transactional services ‘digital by default’ where appropriate” – but enable a network of ‘assisted digital’ service providers for those who are unable to access this brave new world.

There is, however, much work to do in understanding the user’s needs and experience of online public services with the goal of making them simple and accessible to all.

Adobe Connect Usability Event – Video

Earlier this month, Adobe and Emergent hosted the first in-person event of the Adobe Connect Public Sector Users Group. We wrote about the new Users Group earlier in the year in this post.

The first event focused on Adobe Connect 8 usability, and included discussion on what’s new with the technology, accessibility, best practices, and more on the new Users Group itself.

We attended and captured some video footage, including a few words each from our colleagues, Heyward Drummond and Emily Timmerman.

The 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010

Recently, President Obama signed into law the 21st Century Communications and Video Accessibility Act of 2010. The Act includes a number of provisions intended to increase access to video programming on television and the Internet, require access to the user interfaces used to access information online via smartphones, and require access to on-screen menus for DVD players and set-top boxes. You can read more about the Act and Adobe’s thoughts on it on the Adobe Accessibility blog.

We caught up with Andrew Kirkpatrick, group product manager for accessibility at Adobe, directly after he attended the signing event at the White House. Please check out the following video for Andrew’s thoughts on the Act and the event.

Section 508 Accessibility event

We recently sponsored a Section 508 accessibility event at the U.S. Access Board Auditorium in Washington, D.C. The late October event included discussion on the changing standards, policy, and compliance landscape.

We were honored to have talks by the following special guests:

  • Kareem Dale, Associate Director, White House Office of Public Engagement, Special Assistant to the President for Disability Policy
  • Terry Weaver, Director of IT Accessibility, General Services Administration
  • David Capozzi, Executive Director, U.S. Access Board

The morning also featured a presentation from Adobe and other government leaders on best technology practices for achieving accessibility.
