Are you trying to open PDF files through Firefox or through Adobe Reader? Are you seeing any error messages when you try to open these files?

      • By u3astudent - 6:16 AM on May 30, 2013

Since upgrading Adobe Reader to v.11.0.03, I have been unable to open any of my pdf files – which worked perfectly before. The pdf will open for 2 seconds, then freezes, and I get the error message:
        Adobe Reader has stopped working
Windows is checking for a solution to the problem
        which becomes:
A problem caused the program to stop working. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available
Programme remains frozen, and the only option I have is to close it.
I have tried repairing the programme as recommended, and uninstalling/reinstalling – with no improvement.
I am running the latest Firefox, and Windows 7 – 64-bit. This is trying to open the pdf’s in the programme, not the browser – which doesn’t appear to work either.
Please Help! I urgently need to open my pdf’s for my OUA coursework.

Hi there, sorry to hear you’re having trouble with Adobe Reader. Could you try launching the application without opening a file, then choose Help > Repair Adobe Reader. After that’s completed, try opening a file again.

          • By u3astudent - 10:14 AM on May 31, 2013

Thanks, but tried that – no help – just tried it again, same result.

          • By joiemikitson - 3:59 PM on May 31, 2013

Please try uninstalling Adobe Reader completely from your system, then reinstalling the base Reader XI (11.0.0) from: ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/11.x/11.0.00/en_US/AdbeRdr11000_en_US.exe Let us know how it goes!

Panic over – just found the answer in your forums:
            http://forums.adobe.com/message/5360633#5360633
i.e. “Can you open Adobe Reader by itself? If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].”
I did that, and it works fine now.

          • By SirCake - 12:58 PM on August 6, 2013

u3astudent, you are a genius! That fixed it. Thank you for posting the solution.

I am also trying to open pdf and jpg files from emails which would always open before but I now cannot. running windows 7.

    • By Jerri - 10:13 PM on June 16, 2013

I had same problem when I upgraded to 11.0.03. I am running windows 7 on 64-bit HP machine.
I tried all other “fixes”… repairing, uninstalling, re-installing (directly) from Adobe. I had a “PDF Complete, Special Ed” that I thought might be interfering so I un-installed that too, to no avail. A Reader XI still hangs when opening PDFs and then shuts down on its own. I found a version X at Kioskea.net [ http://en.kioskea.net/download/download-46-adobe-reader-x ]
and that solved my problem. PDFs are opening fine again. Phew!

Right click adobe reader. Click on properties. Click compatibility. Select program running your computer. Worked for me.

    • By Rohit - 10:29 PM on August 13, 2013

Welcome to the club, entry is free.

Every few weeks the reader stops working. When I click on the file from the windows explorer, inside mozilla thunderbird or from firefox. There is a brief flash of a window and then nothing.

I am getting sick of removing it, rebooting and then re-installing it… thats the only sequence that works. Why the heck cant they fix it already.. Its been months since the first report.

      • By Michelle - 3:36 AM on May 17, 2013

        • By joiemikitson - 4:59 PM on May 17, 2013

Hi Michelle, thanks for reaching out. Is this occuring when you launch Reader and then open a PDF or when trying to open a PDF through your browser?

  • By Christy - 8:19 PM on May 15, 2013

Reader XI (11.0.3) is not opening on Windows XP SP3 system. AcroRd32.exe appears in task manager, but never opens either from the executable of through IE8. Basically this is preventing users from printing PDF documents. Please help!

    • By joiemikitson - 4:54 PM on May 16, 2013

Hi Christy, sorry to hear you’re having trouble. Could you open Control Panel > Add Remove Programs. Select Adobe Reader XI (11.0.03) and choose ‘Change’. Choose the option to repair Reader. After that’s completed, restart your computer and try launching Reader.

Adobe reader 11.0.3.37 is freezing when start (tool loading)! Drop dead!

    • By joiemikitson - 8:57 PM on May 16, 2013

Sorry for the trouble, Max. Are there any applications running in the background? Some applications that run in the background may cause system errors or freezes when running concurrently with Adobe Reader. You can identify these applications and disable them before starting Adobe Reader. In order to do so, follow the steps in this link: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/troubleshoot-errors-freezes-reader-windows.html. Please let us know if this helps!

Reader x version 10.1.7 will not print pdf files! Only blank pages! Tried “print as image” and no difference. Please help! I have vista 64 bit & an HP psc 2210 printer. Driver is up to date.

    • By joiemikitson - 5:00 PM on May 17, 2013

Hi Stacey, thanks for reaching out. Are you able to print from other applications to this HP printer without issue? Does this problem happen with all files, or just a particular one?

      • By stacey - 8:43 PM on June 11, 2013

It was happening with any pdf file that I tried to print. Other applications were printing with no issue. However, I just tried a few pdf files and it seems to be printing fine. ??? If it happens again I will post another comment…very strange. Thanks for the quick response!

    • By Ron - 12:48 AM on June 9, 2013

Same problem here, with an addition: Adobe Reader, also 10.1.7, quits opening anything from anyplace. When I tried to print it so I could at least view it, same problem. Will Not Print.

Damn auto-upgrades!! And it won’t let me uninstall!

  • By Nikki - 4:27 PM on May 17, 2013

Adobe Acrobat X (10.1.7) updated on my Windows 7 PC yesterday. Today I cannot open a PDF file successfully. It will open, but within moments it locks up flashing the following error message:
C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Acrobat 10.0\Acrobat\sqlite.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error. Try installing the program again using the original installation media or contact your system administrator or the software vendor for support.
What can I do to rectify this situation? Use of Adobe Acrobat is critical to performing my job duties! TYSM for your help!

    • By Nikki - 4:40 PM on May 17, 2013

Also, add to this dilemma the fact that I can no perform a “Print to PDF”.I get a Printer Error message that reads: An unknown error occurred while printing.
I truly need to get this software back online. I use it extensively in my work, so I am basically dead in the water with this right now!

    • By joiemikitson - 8:15 PM on May 17, 2013

Sorry for the trouble, Nikki. Could you try launching Acrobat by itself and then choose Help > Repair Acrobat Installation? Then restart your computer and try to open a file again. Let us know how it goes!

      • By K-Stat - 8:24 PM on July 16, 2013

I tried this, but it still doesn’t give me the option to print to PDF. I also tried adding it like a printer, but not successfully. =[ Any other suggestions?

  • By Gregor - 6:51 AM on May 18, 2013

I have the same problems as others using Adobe Acrobat X (10.1.7). Program doesn’t start either if i click on the icon, either if I want to run it from the start menu either if I click on the particular adobe file. It worked just fine before the 10.1.7 patch was installed two days ago. Unfortunately I can not remove this patch, the computer doesn’t give this option. I already try with repairing the instalation of Adobe in control panel, but this changed nothing. Adobe files won’t open. Pelase, help. I didn’t find any answers regarding this issue on official Adobe forum. I’m using MS Windows XP Professional service Pack 3.

I upgraded to Reader 11.0.03 and can no longer print any .pdf files in Mac OS 10.7. I get the print dialog box, but when attempting to print get a pop-up “The document could not be printed” and then “there were no pages selected to print”.

    • By joiemikitson - 1:58 AM on May 20, 2013

Hi Dave, Sorry for the trouble. Can you please post this in our forums so our staff and community of experts can hep you work through this issue at http://forums.adobe.com/community/adobe_reader_forums/ ?

      • By Dave2 - 6:46 PM on June 28, 2013

I had a similar issue with reader 11.0.03 printing locking up and these steps fixed it for me.
        • Open Adobe Reader … then be quick before it locks up. 
        • Go to “Edit” > “Preferences” > “Security (Enhanced)”
        • Uncheck the box labeled “Enable Protected Mode at startup”
        • Click OK
        • Close and Re-Open Adobe Reader

  • By Larry - 4:55 AM on May 19, 2013

I am running Windows Vista and cannot open any .pdf files. When attempting to open, I get an error message that says Adobe is already running, but after CTRL-ALT-DEL, I do not see it running in the Task Manager. I also followed your prior instruction (open Control Panel > Add Remove Programs. Select Adobe Reader XI (11.0.03) and choose ‘Change’. Choose the option to repair Reader. After that’s completed, restart your computer and try launching Reader) with no success. I then attempted to Delete Adobe Reader X (10.1.7) but still get an error message it’s running??? Help, please!

  • By jake - 5:46 PM on May 19, 2013

I also been having problems with 10.1.7 with the update yesterday. When I try to printout from the browser, FireFox v22, the print says “error” and crashes FF and I lose the tabs I had open. I’ve tried the “Repair” feature with no help. Advise please…Thanks.

    • By joiemikitson - 2:11 AM on May 20, 2013

Hi Jake, Exactly which error message do you get when you try to print?

      • By jake - 5:35 PM on May 21, 2013

When I open a .pdf in my browser, Firefox, I see a yellow warning that “This pdf document might not be displaying properly.” There is a button to “open with a different viewer.” When I click the “open with…” option it just shows me the print option review. There is no error message but when it starts to print all open tabs close and only the window showing the pdf is showing. There is a mesage that “An error occurred” but no other information. When I restart FF I get the home page only. Didn’t do this with previous version. I just used IE8 to print the same document from an open tab and it printed correctly. If I save the pdf it prints normally.

        • By joiemikitson - 5:22 PM on May 22, 2013

Hi Jake, Firefox may be trying to display the PDF with it’s own PDF-viewer. Please try the steps here to configure Firefox to use Reader’s PDF Viewer: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/using/display-pdf-browser-acrobat-xi.html

          • By jake - 6:12 PM on May 28, 2013

The 10.1.7.27 plugin was enabled. I checked the status of the addon plugins and it said this plugin was “Vulnerable.” An outdated plugin. I updated to XI 11.0.03 and we’ll see how that works. Thanks. I will reply when I see what happens.

          • By jake - 6:26 PM on May 28, 2013

OK, that worked. I updated the Reader to XI from X (older version) and it printed fine from the browser and didn’t crash the browser. You might recommend this to FF users to check the status of the plugins and FF will tell you if the plugin is, in this case, “Vulnerable” and to check for a solution which directed me to the Adobe update page for newest version. Thanks.

I cannot print to PDF on my MacBook from Adobe Reader 11.0.03. It says to Save File As. I don’t want to do that, I only want certain pages.

    • By joiemikitson - 1:59 AM on May 20, 2013

I’ve just been through ALL of the discussions boards to try and find an answer to the problem with not being able to print any pdf document. Have installed/uninstalled various Adobe readers, have repaired, fixed, enabled/disabled but to no avail as still cannot print any pdf document. Have now gone back and installed the latest version of Adobe X1 and I’m on windows 7, but still cannot do anything, just freezes as soon as you press the print button.

  • By Lee - 11:58 AM on May 20, 2013

When I try to download Adobe Reader XI I keep getting taken back to Reader X download page.

    • By joiemikitson - 3:52 PM on May 20, 2013

Hi Lee, it sounds like you’re using Windows Vista. Reader XI wasn’t released on the Vista platform and is not supported, but can be installed. Try downloading it from here: ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/reader/win/11.x/11.0.00/en_US/AdbeRdr11000_en_US.exe . Let us know if this helps!

      • By Mike Walls - 6:25 PM on August 18, 2013

It would have been very helpful to include that info on the download page instead of wasting half an hour of my time trying various search strings on your site to find this buried info.

Does this mean you are abandoning Vista?

  • By Flachaire - 2:41 PM on May 20, 2013

I am having the same problem PLUS my signatures are gone (grrrr!). I can’t extract pages, the annotations tool bar is gone. It doesn’t work the same as my previous version. This version is very unfriendly — I don’t think I will ever upgrade again unless I know how it will change first…so disappointed. It used to be so easy to use the old version, piece of cake.

Hi, I have not been able to read or open PDF files since I upgraded to Adobe XI. I have a dell lap top running Windows7. I tried the repair installation several times and also uninstalled and re-installed several times. Neither method is working for me.
    Thanks, Nancy

    • By joiemikitson - 3:53 PM on May 20, 2013

Sorry for the trouble, Nancy. It could be an issue with your OS settings. There are instructions on how to ensure that your OS can recognize the PDF, as well as other potential solutions here: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/cant-open-pdf.html

  • By Frugal Tony of Washington - 5:14 PM on May 20, 2013

Adobe reader printed fine on my 18-year old HP MP5PS printer with maximum memory until the new updates on both 10 and XI. I tried the suggestions about Optimizing For Portability, but the initiation file is too big. I tried setting the font to New Times Roman, because I know the printer has that font in its memory. None of this worked. I just got a new cartridge that will last me another five years. Unless I can get the old version or Adobe Reader 10, or the updates reduce the amount of required memory for printing, I guess I won’t be using Reader anymore. (Toshiba Satellite with WIndows 7)

    • By joiemikitson - 9:25 PM on May 20, 2013

Hi Tony, sorry to hear you’re having trouble. Try clicking ‘Advanced’ in the print dialog box and checking the ‘Print as Image’ box. Let us know if that helps! Also, is this happening for all files, or just one or two?

Do not update to “Adobe Reader and Acrobat XI (11.0.03), X (10.1.7)”
You will get problems printing documents. Only solution is to remove an install a older version of AR.
The problem we had is with Canon IRC2380 multifunction printer. it did not effect all clients but did effect XP and Win 7 pro x64. i have disabled auto update on other pcs before they got the same problem.

  • By GerMc - 1:06 PM on May 21, 2013

Fix – one of these also listed above

    File>Print
Untick choose paper source by PDF page size
    File>Print>advan
    select – Print as image
    + latest print driver

  • By Jeffery - 11:43 PM on May 21, 2013

I’ve updated to 9.5.5 and it said Installation Failed, now when I run acrobat I get C++ runtime errors.
I tried to start Acrobat program its self and windows 7 64 bit gives me a Security Warning “We can’t verify who created this file. Are you sure you want to run this file?” Then I get the runtime error.

    • By joiemikitson - 5:23 PM on May 22, 2013

Hi Jeffrey, sorry to hear you’re having trouble. Could you try repairing your Acrobat installation by choosing Control Panel > Programs, click the Acrobat listing and select Change/Modify. You’ll then be presented with the option of repairing the installation. Please let us know how it goes!

      • By Jeffery - 6:29 PM on May 22, 2013

I should have mentioned that I tried to repair and still received the “Installation Failed” message.

Can I remove 9.5.5 and go back one update?

I am unable to print pdf files. Adober Reader X Ver10.1.7 was installed 6 days ago. same printer was working fine yesterday and can print emails from MS outlook and MS excel files but not MS word docs? dunno what is going on. Any assistance would be appreciated. Cheers

  • By Alex Stefanov - 1:58 PM on May 22, 2013

After updating, reinstalling and reading forums for the latest version of Adobe, now I can not read any document in PDF format. It opens but I cannot scroll and the program is not responding. I followed some of the advises and nothing again. I see some have problem printing but I can not even get to that point because AR freezes. My advise – do not update to the newer version because it doesn’t work at all. At least wait for the bugs to be fixed (hopefully).

Hi Alex. What OS are you using and what version of Adobe Reader do you have installed? We’d like to help figure out a solution for you.

      • By grunkew - 5:13 AM on July 2, 2013

        Dear Joiemikitson,

Clearly you are in over your head. This problem has been reported many times and the users are giving up on you. Open a trouble ticket & escalate this! This thread is way too huge to read. I am suspecting that reader 10.1.7 was a bad release since the download page for Vista now shows 10.1.4 as the current version. I too have given up trying to convince my system to go back a version.

For Alex and all the other poor users suffering through this my workaround is to use your browser plugin instead of reader. I use Chrome & if you type in the disk letter in the address bar ( C: or D: or whatever) you can navigation down to the file and at least read & print it.

From the Adobe programming staff you have a mess here.

Would you mind providing detail as to what error messages you are seeing and what tasks you are trying to perform? Thank you!

Having issues with Adobe Reader 11.0.3 and 10.1.7 – users cannot open PDF files. Reader freezes. Cannot terminate processes. Requires a reboot. Tried Repair option. No change. Trying hiding all toolbars then showing all toolbars. Thing on right side of Reader window goes away when you hide all toolbars but when you then show all toolbars the thing on the right side does not come back. Perhaps there’s an issue with that thing\menu on the right?

    • By joiemikitson - 3:55 PM on May 23, 2013

Hi Steve, thanks for reaching out. Some applications that run in the background may cause system errors or freezes when running concurrently with Adobe Reader. In order to run Reader with no background applications, follow the steps under ‘Run Adobe Reader while no applications are running in the background’ at this link: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/troubleshoot-errors-freezes-reader-windows.html

      • By Steve - 5:19 PM on May 24, 2013

We were having no issues. This issue started as soon as we rolled out 11.0.3 and 10.1.7 to our 200 computers. Not happy about how you’re blaming “other applications running in the background”. This is pretty obviously an issue with your latest updates. Please fix asap.

        • By joiemikitson - 7:52 PM on May 24, 2013

Hi Steve, we definitely want to help you get this resolved. Is this problem affecting all of your users? Are the users who are affected experiencing a freeze when launching Reader or only when opening PDF files? Does the application truly freeze up requiring the process to be terminated or is it only momentarily (10-15 seconds)?

  • By Dixie Scott - 1:31 PM on May 23, 2013

I cannot even install XI! It downloads but then doesn’t install. I use Firefox and Google Chrome and have tried installing it in both. I get error message: “you cannot use this program on a network drive.” I am not on a network! I have checked my settings. I am on XP Home Edition desktop computer. Now what?

    • By joiemikitson - 4:00 PM on May 23, 2013

Hello Dixie, sorry to hear you’re having trouble. When exactly are you getting this error message? Can you share the steps that cause it to come up? What is the exact error message you’re receiving?

  • By Reannon - 2:55 PM on May 24, 2013

Adobe automatically updated to XL last week and stopped opening or printing. So, I uninstalled and reinstalled which solved nothing. The files still will not open from my desktop (opens from browser but won’t print). I get a message that just says “Adobe Reader has stopped working” with no other explanation and then it closes. This happens when I open the program by itself or a specific document. Going to “Help” and trying to repair it does not work – will not process. The repair patch available on your site does not work — will not install. Any way to get back the old version of Reader? I had no issues with it. I’m running XP.

    • By Reannon - 3:34 PM on May 24, 2013

Now I’m getting a new error. The documents won’t open at all and I get a pop-up which says “Failed to connect to DDE server.” Gotta admit there’s a lot of cursing your names going on in my office right now. Sigh.

      • By Reannon - 3:41 PM on May 24, 2013

I’m actually running Windows 7. Sorry.

    • By joiemikitson - 7:52 PM on May 24, 2013

Sorry for the trouble, Reannon. Please try the following steps:
1.Locate a PDF on the system via Search (any PDF will do)
2.Hold down the Shift key and right-click the PDF file > Select ‘Open with..’
3.Select either Acrobat or Adobe Reader (depending on which application is actually installed)
4.Check the box at the bottom of the dialog box that says ‘Always open with..’

Let us know if this helps!

      • By Reannon - 12:25 AM on May 28, 2013

This didn’t help, and I’m not sure why it would have. I can easily double-click on an Adobe Reader icon (I’m running Adobe Reader XL), it opens for about 4 seconds, then I get the error message and it closes. Using “open with” produces the same result. I’ve downloaded Foxit Reader so I can do my job. Open to other suggestions though. Thanks!

        • By joiemikitson - 9:22 PM on May 28, 2013

Hi Reannon, could you try repairing Adobe Reader via Control Panel > Programs?

          • By Reannon - 1:49 PM on May 29, 2013

I’ve already tried that, too, and I’ve also tried repairing it directly from Adobe Reader. Neither works. I get the following error message: “The feature you are trying to use is on a network resource that is unavailable.”

          • By joiemikitson - 6:12 PM on May 29, 2013

Hi Reannon, thanks for sticking with us, hopefully we can get this resolved! Could you try the Microsoft Fixit wizard referenced in this knowledgebase article: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/error-1714-acrobat-reader.html ? Let us know how it goes!

          • By Reannon - 2:42 PM on June 10, 2013

Hi there, the site doesn’t have an option for me to reply to your below suggestion of using the Microsoft Fixit wizard. That tool appears to be designed for something other than the error I’m seeing. Again, it simply says “Adobe Reader XL has stopped worked” and then automatically closes. I’m also running Windows 7 and the fixit tool does not appear to be designed for that operating system. Any way to just revert back to an older version of reader? It used to work.

          • By joiemikitson - 5:47 PM on June 10, 2013

Hi Reannon, There’s no way of rolling back a patch with Acrobat. The MS FixIt tool is designed to repair the permissions problem that led to that 1714 error.

  • By sharon.b.mulcahy.5@facebook.com - 7:00 AM on May 25, 2013

My IPad 2 has version 10 of Adaobe reader installed. I cannot open PDF documents from Canadian Government websites at all now. The message says I must upgrade to latest version of Reader or anything newer than version 9. I have un-installed and re-installed latest available version from Apple App Store but nothing works. This problem is now escalating an already urgent problem for me. Please help

    • By joiemikitson - 6:44 PM on May 28, 2013

Hi Sharon, thanks for reaching out. The issue here may be with the files themselves. Could you share a link to one of these forms?

  • By sue - 5:17 PM on May 26, 2013

I completely uninstalled and cleaned every trace of the latest Acrobat because it would not print (I have Windows XP, SP3, and use Firefox). I followed directions posted by a user here and then installed version 9.5.
No problems, except now Acrobat Reader is no longer an option for my Lexmark Scanner, so I can’t scan to pdf.

I see from the comments below Version XI has STILL not fixed the printing problem. What is up with that? I have now to choose between printing and scanning. Adobe-just admit XI is a fiasco and stop doubling down.

    • By joiemikitson - 6:45 PM on May 28, 2013

Hi Sue, sorry to hear you’re having trouble. Could you clarify for us what application(s) you have installed right now? Do you have Adobe Reader 9.5 or Adobe Acrobat 9.5 installed?

  • By Zaehringer-Hardy - 9:03 PM on May 26, 2013

Hi, I tried to update 10.1.7 today on my mac. The update bar (blue striped bar) has been frozen for hours and I am not allowed to switch off the computer – won’t let me. meanwhile the Adobe icon on the bottom has two arrows indicating that it is busy. Clearly it isn’t. Please assist – I have no experience here.

    • By joiemikitson - 6:46 PM on May 28, 2013

Hello, sorry to hear you’re having trouble. Could you try to Force Quit the update installer? Assuming that’s successful, restart the computer and try the update again by launching the application and choosing Help > Check for Updates.

  • By Erik - 12:41 PM on May 27, 2013

Firefox (Dutch version 21.0) plug-in controll tells me my version of Adobe Acrobat (11.0.0) is old, but there is not a more recent version (11.0.3) available in Dutch. The option to correct this leads to the (Dutch) update version 11.0.0

    • By joiemikitson - 6:46 PM on May 28, 2013

Hi Erik, the 11.0.03 update should be available for your installation as well. Could you try launching Acrobat, then choose Help > Check for Updates ?

      • By Erik - 3:03 PM on May 29, 2013

From the website it wasn’t possible (why?), but from within Adobe Reader it worked!
        Thanks for the advise.

my system automatically updated to newest adobe reader – now I cannot read any files. AR opens shortly, misses to open the file, then closes again. I have used the acrobat cleaning tool, then reinstalled. nothing works. Windows 7, 64 bit system, I need the prgramm jobwise, is there a way to get an old reader version istalled so I can at least WORK? (OMG, what a monday…) brgds, Regina

    • By joiemikitson - 6:47 PM on May 28, 2013

Hi Regina, we’re sorry to hear you’re having trouble. What happens when you try to launch Adobe Reader without opening a file? Does the application launch properly?

  • By Jen Vasko - 1:11 AM on May 28, 2013

I just transferred over files from my old mac to a new MacBook Pro (mid 2102). I’m running Adobe CS5.5. and Mountain Lion (OS 10.8.3) These seem to work except for Acrobat Professional (version 8.3.1). When trying to open a PDF, I get the following error message “Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional cannot be launched at this time. You must launch atleast one other suite component such as Adobe Photoshop before launching Adobe Acrobat Professional.”
I am also running Adobe Acrobat X, but this doesn’t have all of the features like Pro.
I’ve seen online sources to move certain adobe files other places, re-enter the serial number, but none of these apply or work. This was working fine in Snow Leopard.

    Please help! Thanks

    jen

Adobe XI 11.0.03 won’t open a pdf document saved on my laptop (my resume).
I have tried removing and installing again, but still won’t work.
I have a samsung laptop thay runs on vista.
It opens for a bit, but does not display the d
ocument (just a gray screen), then closes by itself soon after.

    • By joiemikitson - 9:24 PM on May 28, 2013

Hi Monica. Sorry for the trouble. Has this been happening with all PDFs or just a certain one? The reason I ask is because there may be an issue with the PDF file.

  • By Skip Ringerud - 3:00 PM on May 28, 2013

When trying to open PDFs, I’m getting an error message saying “adobe Reader has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correctly”. I have a 2 year old HP laptop using Windows 7, have installed Adobe updates when prompted, and have had no problems with Reader in the past until recently. What’s going on, and how do I fix this? Thanks

Hi Skip, sorry to hear you’re having trouble. Please try opening Control Panel > Programs. Click on Adobe Reader and choose ‘Modify’. Then follow the prompts to repair the installation.

i’m using window 7. also have problem.
cannot open pdf file upon upgraded to 11.0.03

    • By kok seng - 4:38 PM on May 29, 2013

I noticed that the problem comes from “Tools”. Whenever I open my pdf file when tools is trying to run, the file will have problem and close.
However, if I close the “Tools” before I open a file, the pdf file will stay open.

Hello Kok, sorry to hear you’re having trouble. Could you launch Adobe Reader and choose Edit > Preferences > Adobe Online Services. Click ‘Sign out’, then OK. Close and relaunch Adobe Reader, open a PDF and then see if you can open the Tools pane.

  • By Tom Munkres - 8:51 AM on May 30, 2013

I’ve had Reader 10.1.7 since early May. Today firefox says it is vulnerable and starts an update to latest version, but it ends up trying to install 10.1.4 then reports “Reader already installed”, so I’m left with the vulnerable version. When I go to the Reader update site, it wants to give me 10.1.4 there too. Should I just uninstall Reader 10.1.7 completely, then install 10.1.4?

    • By joiemikitson - 8:18 PM on May 30, 2013

Hi Tom, try launching Adobe Reader after a fresh restart and choose Help > Repair Adobe Reader. Then launch Firefox and check to see if it still gives the same message.

  • By tj - 8:57 AM on May 30, 2013

I updated to reader 11.0.3 from 10.1.7. Now I cannot open any of my pdfs. When I try to open a pdf, the reader will launch and then disappear without opening anything. No other changes were made to my computer so it has nothing to do with other programs operating in the background. How can I get 10.1.7 back?

    • By joiemikitson - 8:18 PM on May 30, 2013

Hi Tj, sorry for the trouble. We have a few troubleshoot questions:
      1. Which OS are you using?
      2. Have you tried repairing Reader?

    • By Fred - 2:35 AM on June 10, 2013

I have Windows XP and updated to reader 11.0.3 and couldn’t open my pdfs. What solved my problem was that I Right clicked on my Adobe icon short cut. Then I clicked on properties and went to Compatibility and unchecked the compatibility box since none of the listings were for XP. This resolved my problem. Hope it works for you. It seemed to simple of an answer for this problem.

Adobe XI with windows 8 is crap…. i constantly have to uninstall and redownload it due to a “Raise without handler” error. The only fix I have heard for this is paying the $200 to get adbobe pro… not cool. Any useful suggestions to prevent this from happening?

    • By joiemikitson - 8:21 PM on May 30, 2013

Hello Sarah, sorry to hear you’re having trouble. Are you only receiving this error when opening specific files or all files? What is the exact version of Adobe Reader do you have installed?

      • By Sarah - 12:43 PM on July 15, 2013

I’m having this same error message. It’s when I try to open any file with Adobe Reader. The version I have is the latest – XI and I have Windows 7 on my machine. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling multiple times without any positive result.

I am using Adobe Reader 10.1.7 on Windows 7. Ever since the upgrade to 10.1.7 I have noticed that the reader takes significant amount of time to open files. Is there anything I can do to speed up load times!

    • By joiemikitson - 3:58 PM on May 31, 2013

Hi Akshay, are you experiencing this delay when opening files directly in Reader or through the browser?

Hi John, sorry for the trouble you’re experiencing. We need a little more info so that we can get this figured out for you. To start, which OS are you using?

Since update to 11.0.03 have had nothing but problems trying to open program, open .pdf files as well as in IE10. have uninstalled, reinstalled, repaired, many times. resorted back to 11.00.00 still same problem, program opens for approx. 18 sec, tool bar now highlighted (previously faded) but unresponsive to curser pointer selection. then view window disappears. all OS (windows 7 64bit SP1), programs are up to date and installed.

    Victory! problem resolved,
    Open short cut properties,
    open file location,
    find and open “Eula.exe” application,
“Distribution License Agreement for Use on Personal Computers”
    read and accept,
    ALL Fixed!

    • By Zin - 5:12 AM on June 1, 2013

      Finally! something that worked,
after weeks of FORUMS, SEARCHES for fixes, repairs etc. trying to fix this program update, and failing to get it to work (no more auto updating) worked out what the above solution meant, tried it and Viola! “IT WORKED”, don’t recall the update or reinstalls asking for an acceptance for the licence agreement. But who cares it now works again! HAPPY! HAPPY! HAPPY!

I just installed the new Adobe Reader XI.When I scan documents my printer always ask which application I want and I always choose Acrobat Reader but since the update, when I scan documents,I get a message that says” Item you have requested has a program that has been deleted or moved”.I did the repair thing and I did the uninstall and reinstall thing. What else can I do?

    • By joiemikitson - 8:52 PM on May 31, 2013

Hi Heather, sorry to hear you’re having trouble. Sounds like the file association of PDF to Reader, may have been lost. What happens when you double-click a PDF file saved on your system? Does it open in Reader or prompt you for an application to open the file with?

I can see by this listing that you are having numerous problems with various OS and Adobe Reader. I am experiencing some of the same but some different ones too. I am running Windows Vista with all the latest service packs and updates. I’m not sure which version of AR I was running when all was fine but seem to experience numerous problems of the program hanging whenever I try click on any menu item or when I try and save a downloaded PDF from a website, under version 10.1.7. After much frustration I uninstalled and cleaned up any files of Reader, went to your website and downloaded Adobe Reader 10.1.4 as this was the apparent latest version for Vista acording to the site that recognized my OS. I downloaded and saved the file, then ran it. Now what did I download? It wasn’t the actual Reader exe file but just a loader wasn’t it? So after I ran through the installer program, the program I downloaded disappeared! If I want to reload it I now have to download it AGAIN! Why? Anyway, once I ran the version I downloaded, everything was fine; it alowed me to save, I didn’t have the “Export PDF files” with option to change to a Word document, column down the right hand side, wasn’t slow. Perfect. But today, I opened up a PDF that I opened after the reinstall, and printed, but today the version is now 10.1.7! I downloaded 10.1.4 and it worked why is it now a different version? This one is slower and again has the “Export PDF files” column on the right. How can I get rid of this column? It takes up to much room and limits how much I can see of the document I am trying to view. I don’t ever change a PDF to a Word document or publish to the web so this is useless to me.
Please let me know what is the proper current Adobe Reader that is working that is foe Windows Vista 32 bit and the website to download it.
I also need to know how to turn off this auto update feature that I’ve read in this column that others have had problems with, as it seems to update to a version that no longer works correctly.

    • By joiemikitson - 3:51 PM on June 4, 2013

Hi Craig, try clicking the word ‘Tools’ above that column, it should collapse for you and no longer display.

When we upgraded to internet explorer 9 I couldn’t print to pdf any longer either. The print in the ie tools button didn’t work. IE9 has the print buttons as mouse overs (or something) that appear when you get near the bottom of the browser page, these are the correct print buttons to use. I’m just saying.

After updating to both 10.1.7 and 11.0.3, staff members here and volunteers nationwide have been having issues viewing the selected radio buttons and checkboxes in the non-editable pdf (this is not a form but a pdf created out of an online form). The only fix we’ve been able to find is to uninstall and then reinstall 10.1.4 for both Reader and Pro. My supervisor spoke with Adobe about Reader and I did about Pro and both times we were told that we could not be helped unless we paid the technical service fee (ass well as for each of our volunteers to do this if they would like it fixed on their machines). So we are stuck using older versions because the new ones do not work, and Adobe refuses to even take a look. On my XP machine I do not have this issue with 10.1.7 but on Windows 7 machines we do. I have not yet confirmed all of the operating systems of the volunteers who are experiencing this issue. There is a problem with the versions 10.1.7 and 11.0.3. Maybe someone else has found another work around?

Hi Victoria, we’re sorry to hear you’re having trouble. Are any of the files you’re having trouble with publicly accessible? If so, could you provide a link? We’d like to take a look.

        Hi
Exactly the same problem us and our clients are experiencing.
We generate read only pdfs. These pdfs contain a collection of radio buttons. V10.1.7 does not render the radio buttons but displays an empty box. We’re on W7 but can’t talk for our 1300 clients.
        Really need this resolved.
        Many thanks.

I have Reader 10.1.7 installed on my computer. I keep getting an update request for Reader 11.0.3.37 from TrustedSoftwareApS. Is this a legitimate Adobe Reader update? Tried to find publisher info online with no success.

    • By joiemikitson - 7:23 PM on June 6, 2013

Hi Teresa, Adobe Reader 11.0.3 is the latest version of Reader available. We’re not familiar with TrustedSoftwareApS, so we wouldn’t recommend following any prompts from that service/application. If you’d like to install Adobe Reader XI, you can do so by downloading it from http://get.adobe.com/reader

GUYS: VERSION 11.0.03 DOES NOT WORK WITH VARIOUS SYSTEMS AND OPERATING SYSTEMS.
BEFORE THE PATCH EVERYTHING WORKS AFTER THE PATCH NOTHING WORKS AND ADOBE READER FAILS TO START… SO DO YOUR HOMEWORK AND FIX IT AND WITHDRAW THIS PATCH.

DO NOT ASK ME FOR DETAILS, THE PROBLEM IS NOT RELATED TO MY OS/SYSTEM OR PDF-FILE IT’S YOUR BUGGY SOFTWARE.

    THANK YOU!

    Hi There,

I am running OSX 10.8.4 on my Macbook Pro Retina, and my version of Acrobat Pro 11.0.03 isn’t functioning properly. I will be able to open any PDF (within Acrobat) and after about 5 seconds of the PDF being open, Acrobat will close on it’s own – without any type of error message. This is regardless of which PDF file I try to open and will perform the exact same way each every time.

This is the only product within my CS6 package that doesn’t function properly and its quite annoying.

    Thanks

I use adobe reader 9 the previous version, so I updated to version 11, unfortunately I can not fill out a form provided by my employer to be used in adobe reader XI.
I get a message saying that the version 8 ~ 9 shall be used.
    can anyone help.
one more question, can adobe reader version 8 or 9 is used on windows 8 ( I mean ultrabook with touchscreen)

    • By joiemikitson - 7:27 PM on June 12, 2013

Hi Yope, did you uninstall the previous version of Reader before installing Reader XI? You may need to make sure previous versions of Adobe Reader are uninstalled and reboot before continuing. Is this a public form you are using?

I posted on Jun 12th but I must have done something wrong as my post isn’t showing up. Standalone Adobe
Reader downloaded in Jan, no problems. This week it stopped working, won’t even open. I tried to uninstall the patch, system tells me I’m not the administrator. I’m the only user. Tried to completely uninstall, same system message that I can’t uninstall Adobe Reader. I’m running Windows 8. Any ideas?

    • By joiemikitson - 6:21 PM on June 13, 2013

Hi Glenn, We got your comment. Hope this helps. Create a user account that has the same permissions as the account you use when the problem occurs. Or, create a new local administrator account. If the problem doesn’t recur when you log on to the new account, then the original user account could be damaged. For information on setting up a user account, see “Create a user account” in Windows Help And Support, or contact your network administrator. For information on setting up a new local administrator account, see Create new local administrator account (Windows Vista).

Hello, I’m using a ASUS laptop, Windows 7 OS, all my drivers and updates should be up to par, but AR won’t open. I’ve updated all of my Adobe software whenever prompted, but ever since 11.0.03 I’ve been unable to print PDF files using AR. I’m informed there is no file to print. This happens on all pdf files, both old and new, some of which I’ve printed before. And whenever I try to print within Firefox on any of my Windows 7 computers, the file either doesn’t print, or prints the file without the first page.
Well, this wasn’t such a big problem before, since printing is not a priority for me, but since the latest system update, AR hasn’t opened successfully. Opening a pdf or AR directly both result in the same thing: the programme launches, freezes before anything can be done, does not open the pdf, and then tells me “Quitting: Raise without Handler!”, after which Windows informs me AR suddenly stopped functioning and Windows begins a search for the problem, which is then never finished (the windows simply disappears). I’ve tried multiple pdf files, so that’s not the problem.
I’ve tried restarting my laptop, deleting and reinstalling AR 11.0.03 several times, after that I tried with 10.1.4, and even different language options available on the website. The installation works, even if it’s really really really slow. The only way to remove the software has been forcing I’ve ran Detect and Repair between every reinstallation and nothing happens. I even deleted every single Abobe software (including all plug-ins) I had and reinstalled the ones I absolutely do need, with no effect on AR. All result in the same error message. I’ve checked that Windows functions properly, and that no other software is having any problems, and even scanned for malware and viruses and there’s nothing. I can’t try any of the fixes suggested within AR, ’cause the software does not respond to anything.
Is there anything I can do ASAP, or should I just give up on AR and find an alternative software? ‘Cause I’ve got a thesis due in two days and all of my sources are currently in PDF format, and it would be really nice to check them for the last time before submitting my thesis.

      • By ripetas - 10:12 AM on June 14, 2013

Hmmm, seems like I could fix the printing problem, but as long as AR won’t even open, there’s really nothing to do. Oh, another interesting tidbit: after my latest attempts to get AR to work, I’ve managed to get the firefox web plug-in working (no idea which thing helped), but I still can’t get the main software to work.

I have CS6 operating on Windows XP prof.
Adobe Acrobat just quit working in the middle of looking at a pdf created from an InDesign doc.
I did full shutdown of the computer (shut down, turn off power supply, hit and hold on button for several seconds, turn on power supply, boot everything up fully)
InDesign is working fine but will not export to pdf,
    Acrobat will not load.
HELP! I’m near deadline for my project which needs to be submitted in pdf.
    What can I do?!

I am fed up of Acrobat XI trying to tag every document I open. I have tried to disable but it is impossible and I have also let the program perform the analysis but it is repeated every time I open the same document. No way!!
Since it is a feature that doesn’t make my life easier I do not want it.
I am now downgrading to a former version until this is solved.
    Regards

Adobe Reader XI 11.0.03 under Windows 8 isn’t able to open PDF/X-4p files (from Mac OS X 10.8.4 made by InDesign 8.0.1, PDF Library 10.0.1 as PDF1.4, processed by Acobat Pro X 10.1.7 – German), it’s just quitting.

For us as printer company another very CRITICAL issue like the already in september 2012 published and still unsolved color issue with Wide Gamut displays – please refer to http://forums.adobe.com/message/4665966 as our updateting clients can’t open our soft proofs from the actual workflow!

Had no problems with Acrobat version 10.x

Installed v. 11 Juen 14th and now can’t go to any website and open/download a pdf.
Instead the following dialog box appears!!

“pdf could not be opened, because the associated helper application does not exist. Change the association in your preferences.”

From reading the posts it seems Adobe rolled out a
version that has left everyone in the lurch!!
    Running XP Pro SP3
opening EULA and accepting did not help either
Have done repair multiple times; downloading several times; etc – all to no avail.
    Please correct.

How do we get rid of the annoying side panel on the right (Export, Create, Send and Store files etc)?
In high speed internet countries, this may work, but in the rest of the world, it tries to connect to the internet, and then one waits and waits for it to eventually time out. In the meantime, one cannot scroll the document.
We cannot operate like this. This is the worst ever update.

I have been using Acrobat reader for years with no problems. As of a couple of days ago every time I try to open a pdf the file opens for a couple of seconds and then just disappears. No error message, nothing. Iver tried opening the reader from the desktop icon and same thing happens. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling, Ive tried using version 10 instead, Ive uninstalled firefox and Skype as they were the only changes on my system recently, all to no avail. The only other change to my system was a Windows update recently. Could this be the problem? Also, someone else in the same office is having exactly the same problem on their laptop too!

  • By JKMartin - 8:52 PM on June 22, 2013

I’ve had the same error as others here – Reader opens, then freezes for a few seconds, then quits. I tried repair and reinstall several times. I finally looked at the event viewer in the Control Panel and found some related to the Adobe EULA. Went to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\’ and ran EULA.exe,

Adobe Reader now opens with no problems.

    I’m running Windows 7 SP1, Adobe Reader XI v11.0.3

  • By Keith Webber - 3:04 PM on June 23, 2013

If Adobe Reader XI closes (or 10 for that matter) immediately after launching and you tried most of the other solutions offered on the net, then I hope the notes below help to solve the problem for you.

Two of the generally accepted solutions are:
    a. Using Windows Explorer navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader, then double-click on Eula.exe and accept the license agreement
    b. Can you open Adobe Reader by itself? If so, try disabling Protected Mode [Edit | Preferences | Security (Enhanced)].

If you have done (a) and that doesn’t do it, you will probably try (b) but it isn’t of much use as you cannot get to Security (Enhanced) to amend anything as the program shuts before you can get there. So try this:

Go to Computer and double click C drive to bring up your folders.
Go to navigate to C:\Program Files (x86)\Adobe\Reader 11.0\Reader\AcroRd32
Click on the file AcroRd32 so that it highlights in blue
The Right click on the file AcroRd32
In the box click on Properties
Then click on the compatibility tab

Choose – Run this programme in compatibility mode for, and choose Windows XP (Service Pack3) – do not use Widows 7 even if you are running Windows 7 it will not work it the later part of this solution.

    Now hit Apply
Then click on the Adobe Reader 11 launch icon
If you are in windows 7 the box – Do you want to allow the following program to make changes to this computer, will probably come up, say Yes

And then the box [Adobe Reader Protected Mode] – the Holy Grail you have been looking for will come up. The bottom button will be active; you need to click the middle one – Always open with Protected Mode disabled. Click OK and you should be there. Click on the Adobe Reader 11 launch icon again and it should now launch properly.

Adobe Reader 11.0.3 will not let me read PDFs in Firefox 21, Windows 7 on a fully up-to-date machine. The first page will open, but if I try to turn to the next page, a “loading” timer (in this version a constantly cycling grey circle) will appear and never finish. I have to download any PDF that I want to read onto my desktop first. Is there a fix for this?

This problem first appeared in an earlier version of Reader–not sure how many updates ago–but it is really costing me productivity, and I know others with the same problem.

Try this link for tips on how to close out of Acrobat and let us know if you’re still having issues: http://helpx.adobe.com/acrobat/kb/acrobat-exe-acrord32-exe-doesnt.html

Thanks for the suggestion and for the sake of argument I tried each and they worked.
However they were just different ways of shutting down Acrobat X after opening a file in order to rename it. I was hoping for an option change that would allow me to keep Acrobat open on the computer and be able to rename files. On a different issue there was a way to stop the splash (Recent file/splash) screen by adding a registry file to Acrobat. That’s the kind of thing I was hoping for.

11.0.3 really is a piece of rubbish! It continually hangs when opening files of any size and on the rare occasion is does open a pdf file it locks up for anywhere between 30 seconds and 5 minutes! I’m running an i7 with 32Gb RAM with Acrobat installed on a Crucial M4 SSD so the spec of my machine should not be a problem.

Why cant we just go back to the good old days of Acrobat v3 where it was a nice small install without any of the bloat and it actually opened pdf files?

Come on Adobe, get a grip. In the mean time I’m off to Foxit as it can actually open pdf files!!!

I just installed Acrobat XI and all of my printers disappeared. I restarted the computer and still the same. I do get a yellow triangle on the two printers that are connected but can not clear them. All of my other “not currently in use or connected printers” do not show up anywhere. I was using Acrobat 8 and did not remove it before I tried the new XI.

    Cannot Print PDF files | Adobe Reader v 11.0.03 | Win7 Pro 64-bit OS

This is happening with web-based documents and with saved PDFs opened in Adobe Reader. This does NOT occur with Word documents, web printing, Windows print test pages, etc. The printer we’re attempting to print to is an HP LaserJet CP1525nw Color printer. We are able to view an entire PDF document with no issue. There is no .dll error. There is no window open behind the print screen window as far as we can tell before it crashes and takes Windows with it. When we choose to print a document, the print preferences box pops up. You can leave the default settings or change pages to print, etc., but clicking ‘print’ produces the same results. The progress bar immediately freezes and so does the rest of the computer. You cannot access anything else, including the desktop or start menu. The only way to reboot is to manually shut the computer down by the power button. We have uninstalled Reader and reinstalled with the same results. I should also mention that the computer’s twin sits in the same office two feet away and has no apparent problem printing PDFs. Same OS, same Adobe versions.

I’m stumped. I have NOT tried disabling Protected Mode on Startup, but was not sure that was a valid troubleshooting tip – there are many tips listed above I’m not sure the usefulness of. Also, I have an older version (10) that I can try to install if the other options don’t work. Since this post began 6 weeks or so ago, have you gotten more feedback and found the CBA to working out this error? Thanks for any help in advance.

    hello,
I have a problem with Adobe Reader 11.0.03. After you install this hotfix, a hyperlink to a PDF file in Excel will not open – the same problem on 20 computers. Do not open only links imbedded such as \ dir1 \ dir2 \ dir3 \ file.pdf on the file server. The amendment 11.0.02 everything works fine.
OS: Windows XP Prof. SP3 32bit
    Office 2002 SP3
    Please help

    • By joiemikitson - 5:13 PM on July 3, 2013

Hi RbK, Have you accepted the license agreement on each computer? Go to C/Programs/Reader 11/Reader… Look for the file named eula.exe. Double click it. Accept the license agreement. Let us know if that helps!

      • By RbK - 8:14 AM on July 4, 2013

yes I accepted – a hyperlink on a local PC open correctly.
Just as they are on the file server will not open in version 11.0.03. with version 11.0.02 open

Thank you for your help, but it did not help. Can someone test this situation (Office 2002 and Adobe Reader 11.0.03). Does anyone have any ideas?

        • By joiemikitson - 7:14 PM on July 15, 2013

Can you clarify what problem you ran into?

  • By Juanita - 12:18 PM on July 3, 2013

Hi, joiemikitson ~ I tried the link you posted and here are my replies:

Can you print this troubleshooting page?
As I said, other pages (including the troubleshooting page) can be printed.

Are you using the latest printer driver?
Yes. I should have stipulated this in my original post. The computer is new and we installed the newest driver for that particular printer.

Try printing the file to the other printer.
We tried printing the document to two other printers. Same issue.

Try the “Print as image” option
    Did not work.

Copy the file directly to your hard drive and print again.
This was also originally attempted; hence the reference to ‘saved PDFs’ – but no change in outcome.

Create a copy of the PDF using Save As command
This was done also; no change in outcome.

    Re-create the PDF file
Again – this was done also; no change in outcome.

    Restart your computer
Several times by manually re-booting, as mentioned in my original post.

Use the current version of Adobe Reader or Acrobat
Uninstalled and reinstalled (as mentioned in my original post – you can’t get any newer than 11.0.03).

If you’ve followed these suggestions and still cannot print, search for your issue in one of the Adobe user-to-user forums.
    I thought that’s what I did?

The fix (for us) was to disable protected mode; however the twin PC’s setting is ‘enabled’ and they are experiencing no issues whatsoever. No offense, but it would be terrific if the root cause of this issue could be tracked down and rectified, rather than trying several different troubleshooting techniques before landing on one that accidentally works. Thank you for your assistance.

    Hello!

I have a problem with the latest acrobat reader (11.0.3 italian). It doesn’t work and doesn’t even install on win XP professional SP3. I download the network installer, I run it and it succeeds. The browser plugin is installed correctly but when I go into the Adobe directory there is no Reader installed. No executable, no directory, no file whatsoever. If I download the standalone installer then it unpacks correctly but still does not install anything. There are no permission issues (I do everything with admin privileges), no antivirus issues and yes, I am looking in the correct program folder. Thank you for your help.

Is there any solution or option with Adobe Acrobat so that we can get Accordion Control access or content in transformed PDF of the website?

There is definitely something wrong with 11.0.3.37

Since May I had been unable to open pdf files from windows explorer, IE, Firefox or Thunderbird. When I looked the versions, I noticed that the desktop version was lower than the ones in Firefox and Thunderbird. So I installed the latest – no luck. I uninstalled it, rebooted then reinstalled it and it worked.

But only for two weeks. Yesterday, it stopped working again !!!! After uninstall, reboot, reinstall it works (doesnt work without rebooting before reinstall).

    This is getting idiotic.

I work at an IT company i rarely work with software, i have 2 clients right now that cannot run adobe XI, i have exhausted all trouble shooting techniques listed on this site. When Adobe is launch it opens and looks like its loading then crashes, i have opened the taskmgr and lanch the app i see the acroRD32.exe on the process tab but it also goes away (crashes) idk if there is a proccess i can kill that is not allowing adobe to function properly. i am starting to think that the user profile itself is corrupt because when i log into the administartor account adode runs fine…. i have used mutiple virus scanning tools the PC is clean.. the clients also have admin rights one is an xp 32 bit machine the other is a win7 32 bit Any help would be great

  • By John Robertson - 12:47 PM on July 10, 2013

LIke others commenting here, I have just updated to XI (11.0.3). Files open ok, but printing is hopeless. At first I thought printing wasn’t going to happen at all. But the printer does eventually generate pages if you wait long enough – probably at the pace of 1 per minute. And this for just a page of text. No graphics or memory intensive images. Older versions of Adobe spit pages out of the printer as fast as you could catch them. Am very disappointed in this Adobe upgrade. Would revert to older version if I could. (Win 7 Enterprise, 64bit)

Pdf documents on my laptop running OS 10.8.4 and this latest Reader update (11.0.03) won’t print on either of our printers, but prints perfectly on my desktop machine — same operating system, but Adobe Pro 9.5.2. I have Adobe XI Pro 11.0.3 running on Windows 7 SP1 (64 bit). If I create a PDF from MS Excel 2010 using the “Print” option and subsequently print the PDF, the result is unusual – the outline of the table is visible (as expected) but only part of the contents is printed (not expected). However if I “Save As PDF” and subsequently print the PDF, the result is as expected. I have asked IT about it an they are none the wiser. Any suggestions for a fix or an explanation as to the differences I am seeing? Thanks in advance.

  • By Steve - 9:16 PM on July 24, 2013

After installing Adobe Reader XI on Win XP, Win 7 (x64), I cannot read PDF docs anymore.
AR crashes all the time, immediately after opening any of PDF files, whether created from Chrome, MS Word, some old PDF files (which used to work fine with AR 9xx).
AR X and XI are just bloated and useless.
The Adobe techies provide the link to a page with troubleshooting tips, which lists everything but kitchen sink.
An example “run AR without any other apps running in the background” – so every time I feel like opening a PDF file, I will close all the apps, kill the background processes, possible Explorer as well and open my PDF from a console window. What a genius idea!!

I have reverted back to AR 9.55. Will see whether this one can still run, after AR XI messed up the registry entries.

Anyone can recommend some other PDF reader or should we all switch to using bitmaps… Total frustration…

    • By joiemikitson - 6:00 PM on July 25, 2013

Hi Steve. What specific error message are you receiving when the PDFs won’t open?

  • By DaveS - 1:30 PM on July 25, 2013

Everything functions properly with the new XI until I close a pdf, at which point the “AcroRd32.exe*” process starts running and will consume 25% of the CPU function. If I open another pdf and close it, another AcroRd32 will start and consume another 25% (total 50% or so). The only solution I have found (I’m not a computer guy) is to open the task manager and actually “end process” each one. This just started with the latest Adobe update. Please advise.

      • By DaveS - 12:11 PM on July 26, 2013

It does not help. It kind of explains why it happens, but the suggestions of how to get it to stop is still a manual process and is what I have already been doing, as I explained in my first post.
My concern is that it is a new problem. I’ve used Adobe for over a decade and this just started.
        Maybe it’s a Firefox/Adobe issue?
Sorry, but no, this did not help at all and I’d rather not resort to Foxit.

        • By joiemikitson - 7:09 PM on July 26, 2013

Hi Dave. Have you tried a different browser?

          • By DaveS - 2:29 AM on July 31, 2013

I have not, as I stated earlier, this just started with the last reader update. I can’t stand Internet Explorer. Please tell me I don’t have to switch.
I’ll be a good boy and actually try though.

It creates the pdf docs, but will not email them. I get either one of two messages. The first one is Acrobat PDFMaker was able to mail merge the document. When I get this message it does not create the pdf files. The other message is There is no email program associated to perform the requested action. • By Winona Christopher - 1:06 PM on July 29, 2013

I don’t think it is my email because I can use the Adobe create and email option without a problem. It opens my email and attaches a single document. It is the mail merge option that does not work.

        • By joiemikitson - 6:56 PM on July 29, 2013

Hi Winona, we would like to help further if we can. Try this: Start “regedit”, and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Clients\Mail double click the (default) value and make sure it displays the correct client (in your case Mozilla Thunderbird). If that does not work we would again suggest you work directly with your email provider. Regards.

Just thought I would leave a comment here, it might help others.

My reader updated to XI, and ever since, every time I tried to open the program, it would shut down within 2 seconds. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, I tried repairing it, I tried the TDSSKiller, and I couldnt try changing the security settings because it would shut down on my before I had a chance (and I tried many times to do it as fast as I could), I also tried going to the Eula.exe and reaccepting the license, I even tried using the cleaner tool when uninstalling it – NOTHING WORKED – I still couldnt open the reader, with or without a PDF.

In the end, I uninstalled it, and just installed the previous version – adobe X, and what do you know – I can use it!!!

With so many people having issues with this latest version – something isnt right, Ive never had a problem with adobe reader before.

Since upgrading to Adobe Acrobat Pro 10.1.7 and Reader 11.0.3, we have the following issue when adding multiple Approval e-signatures to a pdf with a pen:

When some but NOT all signature fields have been signed, Adobe Acrobat Pro X is showing incorrect/misleading message in Signature Status Panel/ribbon at top of pdf – by stating “Signed and all signatures are valid”
    and
When ALL signature fields have been signed – Adobe Acrobat Reader XI is showing incorrect/misleading message in Signature Status Panel/ribbon at top of pdf – by stating that 1 or more fields still need to be validated

How can we resolve this without hacking the registry?

When I open my Acrobat Reader 11, it goes “not responding” after trying to do anything, like choosing any menu option, including Help. I have uninstalled and reinstalled it, but the same thing happens. What is there to do?

for all who cannot print using adobe, just try dave suggestion:
*Open Adobe Reader … then be quick before it locks up.
    • Go to “Edit” > “Preferences” > “Security (Enhanced)”
    • Uncheck the box labeled “Enable Protected Mode at startup”
    • Click OK
    • Close and Re-Open Adobe Reader

I have Mac OS Mountain Lion (10.8.4). I have installed Adobe Reader XI and most things seem to work ok (though when in Safari I have to remember to print from Adobe … at the bottom of the screen … rather than CMD+P or File>Print).

My problem is that I continually get messages to update Reader from (or to?) 10.1.7. I don’t know how to stop getting these upgrade messages.

Thanks in advance for any help!

Unable to open links in .pdf files since upgrading Reader XI from 11.0.02 – 11.0.03.

Protected Mode is always enabled but in 11.0.03 it’s restricting the use of links in pdfs. The same llinks function in 11.0.02 and earlier versions of Reader.

Nothing is logged (AdbeBroker.log) to help identify what is causing the restriction so we are unable to use Protected Mode WhiteListing to resolve this issue.

Rolling back or disabling Protected Mode is not an option due to security vulnerabilites.

Please advise how to troubleshoot\resolve this issue in Adove Reader XI (11.0.03).

why stop working adobe after effects 7.0 when open audio file

I have the same problem with Adobe XI that has popped up with virtually every update of Adobe–when I click on commands like Print a document attached to an Outlook email, it opens in huge size and I am unable to do anything. I end up having to go to Task Manager to kill Adobe. Sometimes I have even had to reboot my computer as it locks everything up. Sometimes if I save the document to my desktop first, it will work all right; other times, not.

There is no justification for Adobe having failed to fix this problem once and for all, many versions ago.

FYI, my screen resolution is 1920 x 1080, so don’t even tell me this is a monitor settings problem.

    Hi

we faced strange issue with adobe reader 10.1.x.x. we have adobe reader installed on multiple servers in the domain. these are basically Citrix servers. when we open any pdf document on them, adobe reader used to open file, but after 10-15 second files get close automatically with below application log in event viewer Also this issue started and resolved automatically, however lasted more than 5-6 hours. Can you Please suggest possible reasons and solution ASAP?

Hi , this issue was observed on Microsoft Operating System. above URL is for MAC OS.

I have seen some adobe forums discussing similar issue on 26 and 27th Aug 2013.

Is there any chance adobe reader can try to connect adobe portal while opening the document and failing because of some issues from adobe portal. Please see one of the similar reported issue on below forum.

Are you still experiencing this issue? The issue described in the thread you referenced was a brief glitch on our end that has been resolved.

Hi Emily, This is an issue with Firefox not Adobe Reader. Other users have had the same issue in this forum. http://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/954492 Can you please add your question in a new thread there?

Hi – thank you for responding. I followed the instructions – used a different browser (IE instead of my preferred Chrome) and it appears it still didn’t work. This is the current version of Adobe Reader on my computer after following the instructions provided by you:
        Adobe Reader X (10.1.4)

What else can I do? This is preventing me from being able to utilize my company’s forms properly. Thank you.

Hi Stacy. Sorry it’s still not working. Can you clarify for us – did you try to uninstall your previous version (X) before trying to install the new version? That may work. Let us know if it helps!
