Download the latest TweetDeck: Memory Leak Fixes & Facebook Integration
The TweetDeck team recently launched version 0.25 of their popular desktop Twitter client powered by Adobe AIR. The latest version includes several impressive new features including Facebook integration, the ability to record video clips within TweetDeck using 12seconds and memory leak fixes. We had the pleasure to work closely with the TweetDeck team to help investigate a memory leak that was impacting quite a few users.
The TweetDeck team discusses new features on their blog and mentions the collaboration:
We’ve been listening and working hard, together with Adobe, making improvements to TweetDeck to fix the memory leak. Today we’re delighted to be able to tell you that the memory leak has been plugged and now the latest version of TweetDeck will peak at a certain level and won’t go any higher. So you can leave your TweetDeck running all day, all night, or forever if you really want to.
We often receive questions around memory and we are working on putting together some best practices for developers. If you have tips you would like to share, please feel free to post a comment or send us your bugs directly (simple test cases are much appreciated). If you are building your application using Flex Builder, the profiler can be extremely helpful in tracking down memory issues in your application (see profiler documentation).
Also, be sure to check out the Performance-tuning Adobe AIR Applications article on the Adobe Developer Connection.
Again, congratulations to the TweetDeck team on the release!

Is Tweetdeck safe to install?
Very scary installation screen warnings - even with latest version 0.25.
"Are you sure you want to install this application to your computer?
Publisher: UNKNOWN
Application: TweetDeck
System Acess: UNRESTRICTED
Publisher Identity: UNKNOWN
The publisher of this application cannot be determined.
System Access: UNRESTRICTED
This application may access your file system and the internet, which may put your computer at risk.
"
Am I the only one getting these high-risk notices?
I'd love to get an official Adobe response to this telling all of us who are getting this warning that TweetDeck is indeed a perfectly safe app to install and that it is trusted by Adobe.
Seems rather strange knowing that Adobe has taken such care with security in Flash with the security settings.
I hear great things about TweetDeck and I'd love to trust its installation. Looking forward to hearing where this goes.
Hopeful! -T

Don't be too quick to praise TweetDeck. I have been emailing and tweeting them for 2 months, and I get no support. TweetDeck will not let me login to Twitter, and TweetDeck "Support" will not help me solve the issue.

@TomS - I have contacted the author of the application to let him know that he can improve the installation experience by getting a certificate from a CA like (VeriSign, Globalsign, etc.)
@Larry Smith: Sorry to hear about the issue you are running into. Does the issue reproduce with other Twitter clients like Destroy Twitter or Twhirl?

Why is it that TweetDeck is limited to KDE and Gnome? Is there anything I can do to trick TweetDeck into thinking I'm running one of the above? I'm using Xfce 4.6. Thanks

I see no clarification. I wont install. Recommendation: (in the same cap setting as the Air description) DO NOT INSTALL
Yes, DO NOT INSTALL

I get the same warnings about unrestricted access.
Kind of crazy how many people ignore those warnings.
I'm not downloading tweetdeck until they get some kind of certificate for their install process.

So, ya, gaoddam assinine that Adobe even ALLOWS distribution or installation of AIR Apps that do not have a CA cert. Adobe should REQUIRE it. DestroyTwitter - same for him, too. Come on, guys and gals, wake up - this is so gay!

Just remember that some of these developers started out simply experimenting with the AIR runtime, and many know that the cert process is helpful, but since they are releasing their applications for free, don't feel the cert is an affordable step. You should thank Adobe for including the warnings (which is more than some operating systems do) and allowing people to distribute these apps (many of which I use on a daily basis) without having to spend the $200+ for a code signing certificate. If you'd like to use (or already use) TweetDeck, and you want to see the app include a signed certificate, might I suggest donating toward the purchase of one?

Why can't Tweetdeck be downloaded manually?
Time and time again I get the message I'm not an administrator, while I am set as one on my own computer.
Manually downloading and installing from the desktop would be much easier and a great solution for many users!

Thanks to some troubleshooting help I received from Adobe, I did the following, and then uninstalled and reinstalled my AIR software and it fixed the problem:
On Mac OS, the mm.cfg file is located here: /Library/Application Support/Macromedia.
Remove this line from the mm.cfg file.
Setting AS3MIR=0
Thanks Adobe for the quick response!

Like others who have brought up the security issues, I want to use Tweetdeck but cancelled installation when presented with warning that the program has unrestricted access to my system files.
Too bad, as this seems to be a great application but lack of publisher verification, unrestricted access to my system, and putting my computer at risk are unacceptable factors.
Until Tweetdeck provides adequate customer service and resolves these serious security flaws I will not use their program, no matter how functional it is or how many celebrities endorse it.

Add me to the list of those who refuse to install TweetDeck due to the apparent security risk. Even if I trust the publisher's motives (which is reasonable, although not a given), that does not imply that I can trust that the download hasn't been intentionally and maliciously corrupted against the publisher's wishes, or (more likely) that it won't have an exploitable security flaw that could take the unrestricted system access and run with it, causing untold grief. It needs to be signed, and it needs to not have unrestricted system access.
As my first exposure to AIR, this is not a positive experience.

I get the same ominous security warnings when I went to download TweetDeck. Until they're willing to provide an explanation regarding the warnings so that potential users can have some comfort that they're not about to expose themselves to untold risks, then I for one would not download their application. I can't believe so many others have, despite these pre-installation warnings.
Oh well. Isn't commerce fabulous in its disregard and disrespect for consumers.

I get the following error - "Sorry, an error has occured. The application could not be installed. Try installing it again. If the problem persists, contact the application author. Error# 2032"
Any insights!

Hi Benoy,
Error 2032 in a stream error. This can happen when an install badge uses a relative file path to the AIR installer file instead of an absolute one. Where are you downloading TweetDeck from?

Theres a very simple solution....... wait until its officially released! :) Thats right, tweetdeck is still in a 'beta' stage of its development - its even states its a very early beta version with its logo on the official website, http://www.tweetdeck.com/
..So at the moment its still a 'try at your own risk' tool. For twitter and adobe to agree on its beta release at all, i doubt it will cause too much damage to your pc- but the authors definately cant be held responsible right now even if it did - not until a final version is hopefully released anyway! ;)
The program has been in beta form since July 2008 according to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TweetDeck
Whether it receives very much development time- if we will see a 'final product' before the end of next year, is debatable, but hopefully it WILL eventually happen-even if only to keep windows users at ease without any worries of any adobe/twitter supported program completely ruining their system! ;)
