What’s new in the next version of Adobe Audition?

Wow.  I don’t know a better way to start this post.

Audition has a whole bunch of awesome new features on the way, and I wanted to share them as soon as we got the go-ahead.  We’ll go into more detail on each of these over the next few weeks, but I hope this whets your appetite for what we’ve been working on. Our approach has always been a balance between our own research and innovation, and the great  input we get from you, our users.  I think we’ve built some unique new features this release, and answered a lot of workflow demands from our customers.  Let’s get right to the good stuff!

Sound Remover
It’s a slightly better name than “Semi-Supervised Source Separation,” but that’s the technology that’s happening under the hood.  While our standard Noise Reduction excels at removing consistent background sounds, leaving the primary signal intact, our new Sound Remover tool is built to unravel primary, dynamic sounds from a recording, minimizing artifacts and loss to other, overlapping sounds.  Here’s a before-and-after shot where Audition has removed a siren that occurred during an outdoor interview.

After training the tool to identify the sirens, visible as arcs in the upper view, the new Sound Remover tool carefully lifts this signal out of the recording while minimizing damage to the interview and environmental sounds we want to keep.

Preview Editor
If you use Audition, you will have noticed something funny about the screenshot above – dual editor views!?  Audition’s new Preview Editor provides a multi-purpose second viewing pane enabling editors to edit or compare multiple regions of a file simultaneously, quickly zoom into a selection without losing your place in a file, or visually preview effects – especially those that affect the duration and playback speed of a recording – so you can confirm your modifications or timing before applying the edit.

64-Bit Performance
With this release, Adobe Audition will be a fully 64-bit application capable of accessing oodles of RAM, taking advantage of the latest and greatest hardware and operating systems, and supporting the next generation of VST and AU audio plug-ins.

Editable Favorites, Favorites Panel
Keep your favorites accessible at all times with the dockable Favorites Panel.  Did the boss demand a change to an otherwise automated set of actions?  No need to start all over: just pop into the Actions Editor to change the parameters for any recorded Favorite.

New Sound Design tools and effects
One of the most common requests from CS6 users was to bring back some of their favorite sound design effects.  So how’s this?  The Pitch Bender is back, and makes full use of the on-screen envelope to allow you sample-accuracy when warping and bending sound.  (And using Pitch Bender with the Preview Editor view gives you almost instant feedback on how your waveform is being warped, stretched, and bent.)  Several other effects see new interfaces and functionality including the real-time, automatable Pitch Shifter and Stereo Expander.  For those who love the graphs and maths, the Scientific Filter enables highly accurate and repeatable filtering and correction.  This release welcomes an improved Generate Noise tool with new noise profiles, and enables Noise and Tone generation directly into your Multitrack timeline!

New Sound Design effects

Pitch Bender is back and better than ever! Real-time, automatable Pitch Shifter, Scientific Filter, and Stereo Expander help warp and change your sounds to match your ideas.

Enhanced Spectral Frequency Editing
Back is the ability to make multiple spectral frequency selections,  and add to or remove from existing free-form selections.  This functionality enables users to carve very delicate selections, identify harmonics, and even draw their signature into their sounds. Sometimes it’s easiest to select a single piece of audio when what you really want selected is everything EXCEPT the selection – easily accomplished with a single click of the new Invert button!

 

Multitrack Enhancements

So many “little” enhancements have been added to Multitrack based on user requests that it’s hard to decide where to begin!  Most visual is the new Track Colors which allow you to color-code your tracks for easy grouping and identification.  Smart clip color behavior allows flexibility in how clip colors behave when moved from one track to another.

When dragging clips into a session, the “little orange bar” is gone. Audition will now display the full clip and waveform when dragging a file into a session. This also includes automatically displaying and creating crossfades when a newly-added clip overlaps another.  Remember when you would drag or paste several clips into a session and they were stacked, sometimes in an apparent haphazard fashion?  Not anymore!  A global preference now determines whether multiple clips are stacked in separate tracks or placed consecutively in a single track, with a simple modifier key to alternate between the two behaviors. Please hold the applause, people – there’s more!

Easily keyframe clip silence in a keyframe with a single operation. No more will you need to carefully create 4 keyframes on the clip volume envelope, then carefully move two of them down and line them up to the others.  If you prefer to just select and delete, that works, too.  But now, once you’ve sliced and diced a clip into pieces, Clip Merge will perform a render-and-replace to quickly simplify your session.  New commands make selecting all clips in a track, or all clips forward or backward from the playhead, a simple right-click or shortcut key.

Navigation Improvements
Many of you use Audition because you face strict, short deadlines and Audition is quick and nimble enough to keep up. Usually. For those of you who operate on a higher plane and for whom time holds a looser leash, we’ve introduced several navigation improvements, by special request. With a host of new shortcuts to arm, mute, and solo tracks, Zoom commands for quickly jumping to an almost-microscopic level of detail around a selection, and shortcuts for fully zooming a selected track, you can now work as fast as you can press a key or two. Additional commands allow users to jump between markers, ignoring any clips or other content in between, or to adjust their view from the keyboard without modifying their selections or playhead.

I decided to list this separate from some of the other effects because it has been a long-overlooked tool in Auditions toolbelt.  We’ve brought the Frequency Band Splitter back from Audition 3, gave it a beautiful interface, and put it into the Waveform editor view where it belonged in the first place!  Quickly and easily split a recording into a series of frequency-limited pieces and remix, repurpose, or rebuild a recording.

Miscellaneous Bits of Awesome
View details about the audio data under your cursor, and see up-to-the-second details about your disk space while recording.  Configure or change the default name for new markers.  Allow Audition to automatically match your device sample rate to the active document or cancel all running operations if you need to shut down in a hurry.  Adjust the metronome from the mixer.  Improved accuracy of sync and silent regions with the Automatic Speech Alignment tool.  Export your files directly to your SoundCloud account and share with the world.  Stop playback at end of selections.  Advanced options when Mix Pasting audio.  Native WMA and WASAPI driver support on Windows.  New audio formats available on OS X!  AAC and iTunes metadata support!  More, more, more!

    I’m really excited about getting this update as part of my Creative Cloud membership. The audio team at Adobe have exceeded all expectations on this update. I love the fact Audition is becoming more and more visual in the way you can edit pitch by drawing on lines and organise your tracks by colour. So intuitive!

    Will you update the SDK to a newer version?

    It would be great to develop Plug In’s for audio.

      Hi Royi,

      Audition does have a file importer/exporter SDK available, and can make session SDKs available as well. We also support audio plug-ins written in either VST2.4, VST3, or Audio Units (on Mac) which can be built using Steinbergs VST SDK.

    Will Audition support 64-bit VST plugins and 32-bit plugins?
    Or will you drop the 32-bit support?
    In any case, the guys at Cockos Incorporated make THE most stable and full-featured bit-bridge in the industry for their DAW: .
    This is coming from a music producer/composer, audio engineer and part-time soundFX guy who bought way too many DAWs only to be dissapointed by most

    I’d love to see a collaboration between them and the Audition team ;)

    Will it still be possible to run Audition in 32-bit mode?

    I have too many plug-ins that only work in 32-bit mode …

      The next version of Audition won’t be able to operate on 32-bit operating systems, however we have worked with the makers of jBridge to ensure compatibility with 32-bit VST effects. On Windows, we can hook to the jBridge API and using your 32-bit VST effects is generally as simple as adding their location to the Scanned Folders list in the Effects Manager. The Mac API support was not ready while we implemented these features, but you can still use jBridge to “wrap” your 32-bit effects so Audition believes they are 64-bit.

        I really hope you make this work. I tried jbridge for Mac with Sony Sound Forge Pro recently, and had no luck at all getting it to run …

        Hopefully Audition will do this better, or I will just have to refrain from updating. I mean, not even Soundtoys have 64-bit versions of their plug-ins ready yet.

      The release date for the next version of Adobe applications has not yet been announced. I’ll post an update as soon as we can share that information.

    Will you be able to train the Sound Remover Tool to remove vocals and other sounds like guitars etc. from an audio track for remix purposes. Or is there another tool that Adobe will surprise us with in Audition Next.

      As with any audio tool, the results depend a great deal on the source material, how it was mixed and produced, and how much time you spend. A common saying in audio circles is, “You can’t unbake a cake” which implies the difficulty inherent to perfectly isolating components of a mix. Sound Remover in its current state excels at removing elements from a mix, especially with carefully crafted selections to train the algorithm, but it should not be expected to be a perfect tool to tear apart a fully mixed song into its component pieces.

    It would be extremely helpful if you could just implement the ability to open old .ses files. The batch converter is great and all but it doesn’t work perfectly. For someone with 10 years of .ses files on hand it’s a huge pain. Not having to worry about managing all that would be great. If a simple app can convert them…I guess, please?

    I Was really hoping for the return of Midi this year, so i wouldn’t have to use two seperate daws, i really wanted adobe to be one stop shop, Adobe and Native Instruments I would love to hose Mashcine within Audition is that at all possible? Any hint or knowledge of when Midi will return?

      Hi Markus,

      Audition CC will include Generate Noise (with new noise profiles, and the ability to generate tones or noise directly in your multitrack timeline.) The Scientific Filter, Pitch Bender, real-time Pitch Shifter, and Stereo Expander effects are available and improved.

      Spectral Phase display is not implemented in this release.

    I’d really like to be able to name a clip in multitrack. For example, I cut an interview into pieces then want to make a note of what’s said in each piece. Perhaps as a mouse over. If I then cut these pieces into smaller pieces, I want to rename each piece.

      Hi Phil,

      You can rename any Clip in multitrack by selecting the clip and changing the clip title in the Properties panel. Another approach might be to make Marker regions in a file within the Waveform view, naming each marker range with the desired title, then dragging the marker ranges into a multitrack timeline. The clips will automatically be titled and the clip duration will be selected marker range.

    Will Audition ever offer real-time plug-in support? I record podcasts and radio programs and it would be nice to be able to compress/limit in this way.

      Most of Audition’s plug-ins are real-time and can be used non-destructively in the multitrack environment. While Audition will always record the raw audio source, the effects can be configured on live tracks and you can hear the affected audio while monitoring.

    Like so many others, I’m awaiting Vsti/Full midi implementation, with piano roll etc, to put Audition on a par with Pro Tools and all other Sound Design/Composer Rig DAWs. Despite Auditions historical legacy to radio users, this implementation is essential to winning over film composers. In the same way that pro tools is the favored DAW because of easy exchange from composer to sound design/music dept, this makes Audition a great choice as a serious industry competitor to PT. It’s the missing link in the Adobe Film Making suite… A DAW that is fully capable for film composing. Please see the urgency and importance of speeding ahead with Midi and VSTi capabilities and consider building a seperate Adobe VSTi engine loader on a par with Vienna Ensemble Pro. This enables large virtual orchestral instruments to be loaded in templates outside the daw, keeping the daw stable and allowing project changes without re loading GB of samples. I’m confident that if all these actions were followed, we’d see a massive expansion to the user base upon release. This is a powerful community that are very vocal about workflow and software choices, so lets turn Audition up a notch from audio mastering and post to Film Composers all in one dream tool! Hoping my little piece might inspire some devs to champion the cause and envision a Film Composing environment to integrate perfectly with Premiere. To be able access the advanced video capabilities of Premiere and integrating punches and streamers, cue markers that slide with the tempo etc… Look at Digital Performer for inspiration… One DAW to rule them all… Lol

    Why did Audition take Pitch bender, shifter and generate noise out in the 1st place? Are they not the most popular of effects?
    Is Audition able to use midi with plug-ins?

      Audition was completely re-written with version CS5.5. While much of the DSP remains the same, the entire application code and audio engine was rewritten to be cross-platform and multi-core/cpu compatible. It was not possible to re-implement 20+ years of features over the course of 18 months of development with the first version, and all features and effects were prioritized based on demand and timing. While Pitch Bender was a popular effect among our sound design users, it was nowhere near the most-used effect among the entire Audition userbase. We did work closely with sound designers and game audio designers for this release to ensure these effects met or exceeded their needs.

      No, virtual instruments are not supported. Only VST 2.4 and 3.0 audio effects, as well as AudioUnit effects, are supported at this time.
