| Directly updating the Windows Installer may not be the resolution always. I would recommend checking the logs created and proceed as per the errors seen in logs. In case the update installation logs indicate issues with the windows installer service, then the above mentioned patch would be useful. |

| Hi , well there is a better approach and here it is -:If you have installed Text to Speech Utility and Captivate 5, then a tool called ‘Text to Speech Dictionary’ is available at \Program Files\adobe\Adobe Captivate 5\VT\\M16\bin. Reach the location and look for “UserDicEng.exe”
Double click the EXE and it will launch ‘English User Dictionary Editor”. Now follow the below steps in order to change the pronunciation of any particular word. 1. Click File Open and point it to the dictionary file. It is located at - To use the the new pronunciation inside Captivate, just use the ‘original word’ and convert ‘text to speech’. The newly created pronunciation will be used and audio file will be created. A captivate movie describing these steps is attached below (turn up your speaker volume). |

When I use Captivate 5.0 on Mac OS to Publish the Project Via Print option to print the Handouts, I get the following error Message  ublish to MS Word failed. We use Adobe Captivate 6.0 and I’m having an issue with the application when using it in conjunction with our microphone (used to record voiceovers for powerpoint presentations). My touchpad and mouse will work initially in Captivate, but will stop working all of a sudden. I can still move the mouse around the screen, but am unable to click on anything. I’ve tried rebooting (five different times) to trouble shoot. This seems to only happen when I bring my laptop to an empty office (undocked, but powered and connected to our internet) to record audio. (It seems fine with the laptop docked at my desk – but we can’t record audio from there due to background noise!) I am able to use my mouse and touchpad to their fullest capabilities in other programs (Word, etc) even while Captivate isn’t responding/recognizing them. Any thoughts?

Great photo post! You must feel really refreshed after that vacation. I once camped next to a farm too. It stormed all throughout the night and you could hear a cow mooing once ever couple of minuets. That poor cow. It was a huge field and I never saw it the whole weekend.

I am also having this problem on a dedicated computer. I’m on a 32bit XP machine running 5 gb memory without any other resources running concurrently. I look at the Task Manager processes and the CPU is barely stressed and memory doesnt even reach 75% before I get the same message. I was able to publish the video until I added the last 5 minutes. Is there a patch or something I can do other than externalizing the video? Please advise.

I want to create a similar tutorials like the Adode Captivate 6 where it shows a window with the tutor and the tutorial at the same time. I would like also to be able to zoom in and out from my image as I give the tutorials.
Question: Can this be done with Captivate 6? or do I need a further Adobe product to achieve this?

I have several powerpoint presentations that do not import correctly. The bottom part of the slides are white, but import to Captivate as gray. When I preview them the bottom part is white. However, when I publish the Captivate project the bottom part of the slides are gray. this also affects questions slides I create in Captivate. They show up as gray even though they should be white. What is causing this?

I would like to know why my captivate 4 projects do not close down automaticaly. I have set the projects option close on completion. However they just leave a blank white block. I am running on windows 7. I am also experiencing the problem when i package it to our LMS being Moodle.

I am publishing a 50 mb video in a course to my LMS and when playing a video, if it has to buffer, it will show “Loading…” and then it restarts the video from the beginning.
Is there a trigger in Captivate 5.5 that I am missing? I would prefer the playback to resume from the buffer point rather than restarting completely. I am using progressive download. The LMS provider insists it is a content issue and not the LMS.

I have the same problem. the only way I can fix it is becasue somehow I found a working file that will let me change/show the list of masterslides. I just open that file then another file that won’t But now I have a new computer that won’t solve the problem even with a file that used to work. Something about admin or something? I do open them as admin all the time anyway. NEEDS TO BE FIXED

Whenever I click the Edit Audio button in Captivate 5, the window opens but is invisible. I know it’s open because I can’t click on anything else until I press Escape. I am using Windows 7 on a PC. I can’t find an answer or solution to this issue anywhere, but it is really hindering my development projects at work. Any ideas?

Yes, if you ever used a two monitor setup, you may have caused the problem. The window is there, you just have to find it. Try switching the position of the monitors you use in properties. Try different resolutions. The box is opening, you just have to find it.

Good Morning,
I have imported a PowerPoint into Captivate and when I preview it and play it that way it allows me to click to continue. Whenever I publish to a MP4 it doesn’t do this and basically runs through the entire presentation. I tried the click box but the text and pictures seem to be coming up as one item on the timeline instead of coming up individually like they are supposed to.
Any assistance is greatly appreciated.Thank you!

I’m trying to create a Simulation Project. In the project I want the intro slides to EXCLUDE the player bar so the user can interact with a menu without seeing the bar at the bottom. I only want to make the player bar available for the actual simulation. Any ideas on how I can do this?

Make them separate files and jump back and forth between them? You can disable the bar but I don’t know how to hide it.

I am working in Captivate 5.5 on an e-learning project. I disable the forward button on the skins toolbar and insert buttons on set times to progress through to insist that students complete every slide. I have designed a quiz at the end and want to enable the ‘review quiz’ option – but it appears that I can’t do this without having the forward button on the skins enabled? Is this right? I must have students progress through every slide and read all the slide. Can anyone suggest a work around to help me?

Hi there, I have Adobe Captivate 2 installed on a windows 7 machine and I’m having problems recording audio. The microphone is working fine and records audio using the Windows Sound Recorder application. However, when I try and record audio via the mic in Captivate it simply freezes and doesn’t work. I have to close down captivate task manager and re-start to get back in. Can you help please?

Make sure you open Captivate in admin mode. Right click and choose options/advanced or go into the properties and find the option. The audio is a separate program from captivate so it doesn’t launch properly with our admin privileges.

have an online lesson that I created in Captivate. When the learner plays it all the way through without stopping there is not a problem. But if they have to stop or pause the lesson, it starts at the last video slide they were on but the audio begins at the beginning. Needless to say everything is not in sync. Can you give me any suggestions as to how I can fix this? I have v.5.5

I am using Captivate 5.5. Our standard is to publish as an MP4. My project is mainly a demonstration, but I’ve added practice sessions within the project where the user clicks through – so a simulation. When I publish as an MP4, the project does not pause for the click boxes as it should. When I publish as an HTM file it works properly. Is there a way to fix this so that is works properly when published as an MP4?

When I hit the 2X FF button, it seems like the sound is removed. I tried to rewind, click on the FF button again and I can’t get the sound back. The only way to get the sound back is to start over. I wanted to check to see if there was a setting feature with that or if it is just a captivate quirk.

I am working on a project in Captivate 6. My question is around the quiz results slide once published in an LMS. When the user fails the course, I have a specific message I want populated (which I entered in the preferences area). My message publishes however it is running across the slide and not entirely readable. How do I edit this particular text caption so that it fits on the slide?

I am trying to open a captivate presentation in captivate 5.5 which I just published to make an amendment and I get an error message. “Adobe captivate cannot open the file. Ensure the file is not open already. The file is not damaged. For example if the file was an email attachment, ensure you have decoded the file correctly. The hard disk has sufficient available space”.. etc etc. There is a video embeded in the presentation but the file is only 111,391 KB. Can anyone help please??????

Using Captivate 4. For survey type quiz questions with answers A) True and B) False, the answer choices overlay the radio button. You can still click on the radio button, but it’s ugly to see and hard for users to read. Anyway to fix this screen problem?

Which format is prefered for having small images on stage in a project? As of now I’m using PNG24 for both background and ikons. The background looks fine, the small ikons very rugged.

I am using Captivate 6 and have added a couple of interactions (accordion type). I run the project (for testing) using the HTML5 output to browser in Chrome. The interaction widget does not load. I notice that it works fine when just playing the project option.
- Is the not loading/hanging problem because i am not doing it on a web server?
Do these widgets (ineractions) work when a course is published to HTML 5?

We are experiencing the Activation issue with Captivate 6. We are getting the “Renew your Subscription” error and when i try to Renew it, it gives me an error “Please connect to the Internet and retry”.
We are into corporate environment (Firewall/Proxy) and we checked on these devices but no issue identified.
Could you please assist with this on priority.

Hi, does Captivate offer keyword recognition in quizes? For example, asking a question with an open ended answer, and allowing the user to answer in a short paragraph, can the software award grades by searching for keywords in the user’s answer ?

While using Captivate 4. I created a 26 slide project from MS PowerPoint. Whenever I publish or preview the “.cp” file, slide 1 & 2 are fine, but starting with slide 3, slide 1 overlays each screen as a shadow & data is completely unreadable. Is there a property I do change to remedy this error?

I want to actively engage users who are viewing my powerpoint in Captivate. I would like to have long answer questions (as the subject of the presentation requires considerable thought and answers). I see the short answer option. Has anyone done a long answer question? Is there a way to have users answer a long question and then have it forwarded to an email address? I installed Captivate 6 a couple of months ago (Windows 7 Professional) and it has been working fine. Haven’t used it for about a month and now can’t start it as I get the following error: the application was unable to start correctly (0xc000007b. Click OK to close application)
i tried unistalling and re-intalling Captivate 6 but get the same error.

Using Captivate 5.5, is there a way to change the display time of a master slide in the template itself. It seems to default to 3 seconds and I haven’t found a way to adjust the master itself; I found that you can adjust the timing of slides using that master template by going to Preferences, but not the master itself.

Hi – I have Captivate 6 files that I need to publish as SWF.
However, the person who created them, somehow made the publishing setting as custom and they will only publish as MP4 files.
In the HELP manual, it mentions you can take MP4 files and stream/embed them in Flash file. There are no instructions in the HELP manual for that. Can someone please tell me or point me to how I can publish these files as SWF?

I’ve inserted a image button on the slide as a next button and I would like to customise this button so it activates only when the learner has clicked all objects on the slide. I’m having issues with my audio attached to roll over images. The slide itself has audio as do 3-4 rollover images, but all of the audio plays at the same time. The audio is attached to the rollover area, and I’ve moved the roll over areas to become active when the slide audio stops, but now all the audio on the rollovers plays at the same time. I’ve also tried this approach using rollover slidelets but get the same result. Any solutions? Thanks!

I have a screen with 4 buttons and each launches a another window. At present each can only launch once. I need them to be hot all the time. Is a button the wrong asset? I tried a click box also but the same thing. It seems that each action is only good for one interaction.

TOPIC: Captivate Software Simulation not capturing images.
I am running Captivate 5 on Mac OS 10.7. I get black slides (no images) when performing software simulation of an application. Mouse motions/actions as well as audio are captured, but all my slides black and there are no images in the image library. What am I missing? Please advise.

Hi. Im using a macbook and have just finished my video and audio recording on captivate 6, but I am unable to publish the file as an MP4. Three windows open after trying to publish. First window is an error message with an exclamation point inside a yellow triangle and says “Adobe Captivate” on the right. Second window is the “Adobe Captivate Vide Publisher” that is grayed out. At the bottom is a window that states “Generating video” with time and percentage remaining. I have waited for that to hit 100%, but nothing happens. I have attempted to publish it on a pc but it says “Publish path has unsupported characters. please correct it and republish.” The file is being saved as “Miguel” for simplicity. Anyone have an idea on what to do?

My properties panel appears to be frozen – I entered a label for a slide and it stayed even when I opened a brand new project. The label name was still there in the properties panel. After searching online, I see that this problem has happened for others and they either cleared the cache or restarted – neither of these solutions fixed my problem. Help.

I am using Captivate 5.5. I published a scorm compliant course and uploaded to an LMS sytem to test stopping/restarting the course.
The slides picked back up where I left off; however, the audio started over. Any suggestions on how to correct this? Is it specific to the LMS?

Regarding Text Buttons in Captivate 4:
I have text buttons within my project set to “go to next slide”. When I test the published version and click the buttons before the slide is done (like learners might do), the slide will stop (including the audio) and not go to the next slide.

I have just installed captivate 6 and the program opens, but when I try to delete something on the screen and a warning box displays the systems freezes and I have to terminate. This happens on activity that displays a warning box, also happens when I try to select a template. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall several times, but no change with problem. Please help, I do not know what to do to resolve this problem.

Here is a Captivate-6 question. How do you replace one slide wtih another?
I want to replace slide number five with slide number six, but I want to keep slide six exactly the same.
When the smoke clears I want the new slide five to have the same image as slide six and the audio of the old slide five.

Captivate 5.5 – When we created an assessment, we made it so the user has 2 chances. Captivate will only mark the question wrong when those two chances are used. When the user clicks outside the correct answer, a prompt will come up telling them where to click. If they at that point click that correct answer, the quiz results will not mark that question as wrong, only when they miss both chances. Is there a way in captivate to give them 2 chances, but at the same time mark that question wrong if they don’t get it correct the first time? I hope that makes sense.

I received the same message when using Captivate 5 to open a .cptx file created with Captivate 5.5.
It is a version compatibility issue — down level Captivate will not open files created with new version of Captivate.

My colleague is trying to install captivate 5.0, but upon launching the exe and entering the licence number, the install time exponentally rises. After 13 hours it had only installed 7% with an estimated 1000+ minutes to complete, which keeps rising rather than falling. I had the same problem on my machine. We have Windows XP Version 2002 SP3. The install is installing to C:\Program FIles\Adobe. We have plenty of disk space.
What can we do to get the install to happen faster? Other colleagues had no trouble at all with their install.

If I record the video from the record button in an open project, the video will publish in a PDF format, but the quality is very bad, even with the best settings. Any suggestions?

I need to copy the background of each slide in a project, and I was wondering is there a way to do this all at once, versus one slide at a time. If so, how can I import them into a graphics program. I already tried selecting all of the slides and then selecting copy background, but when I try to paste them into (SnagIt), I only get the first slide.

I have created many templates in Captivate 5.5. However, suddenly halfway through creating a module using one of my templates the link between the master slides and film strip has broken.
The master slides are still on show and open when selected, One I insert a blanks slide in the film strip it inserts a total blank slide – when I attempt to link it to a master slide in the Properties it does not display the list of master slides created. It only displays ” dummymasterslide” with a tick above this option.
What has happened? please help

On my project a have recorded audio on my slide. I also have a textbox with audio that is invisible which I want it to play when the learn click an image. I added a click box to the image. I have a simulation that is being scored. Each correct ‘click’ yields 5 points. One of my slides has 2 possible correct answers — How do I make it so the total score at the end reflects that. Before I add the second ‘correct click’ the score is 340. If I put the other correct click in it goes up to 345, but they will never get 345, since they only need to click one or the other on that particular slide. If I tell the one not to include in the score then they will not get points for that answer and may fail. HELP.

I have multiple .cpx files that I would like to combine into one training. In Captivate 3 I was able to import .cp files. However, I can’t seem to find the same functionality in Captivate 6. If I copy and paste the pages into the main training, I lose the links that were created in the smaller files.

When running Windows 7 64 bit do you have to be an administrator? In my company we are not and I am having multiple issues. I also get a warning that says some features may not work if your not an administrator. What can I do?

If you right click on the Adobe Captivate icon to open it, then select Run as Administrator, I think this will work. I’m an administrator on my machine, so I don’t know if you have to be an admin on the machine or just an admin in Captivate.

When users click a question, they’re jumped to an SWF answer. When they click exit in the SWF answer, they return to the FAQ but the SWF does not stop playing.)

Greetings…I have a customer whose software works in software that utilizes millions of colors+. When they do a capture/recording it looks great on the individual ‘slides,’ however on Preview or Publish colors are actually ‘lost’ or not displayed.

In Cp 6, if you create a quiz based on random questions taken from a question pool, with the ability to retake the quiz if the user fails, will the user get the same questions on the second attempt or will they get a new set?
(Previous Cp versions generated the random question set when the module first launched so if you cliked “retake” you would just get the same questions again).

My business has purchased Captivate 6. I have performed a screen simulation. When trying to play 5 slides I receive a SWF compilation failed error Note: Please verify if any of the actionscript keywords is used as user variable name. If I click ok nothing happens it just sits on the screen I am trying to view the 5 slides of. I also get this error if I try to publish my project. Hi, I am recording Demos using Captivate 5.5. I am recording a webpage where I have to scroll down the page and select action buttons during the demo. I find that the recording does not record the scroll down and shows me selecting a different part of the page (before I scrolled down). I found a post related to this issue for version 4.0 but the solution described does not seem to relate to Version 5.5 (ie. it was suggested that in preferences you deselect an option that is not listed in V5.5). Has anyone had a similar issue and can offer some assistance? Thanks

I downloaded the Captivate 6 Trial for Mac, but it refuses to install. I’ve tried repairing disk permissions, rebooting into safe mode, etc… nothings seems to work .

I am trying to install the trial version of Captivate 6. After a few minutes the installation grinds to a halt and the time to completion starts to climb. No CPUs are being used on the install. It won’t even let me cancel – I have to kill the process.

Bought and installed Captivate 6. When I publish as a PDF, it does not play correctly (hangs). The same module published as PDF in 5.5 worked perfectly. Any ideas and/or known issues with 6? Thanks!

I am having the same problem. I tried saving my video as FLV, F4V, and finally MP4 to fix. When the video ends in PDF, it doesn not automatically transition to the next slide in Captivate 6. I tried the same video file(s) in Captivate 5.5 and it worked. Seems to be a bug. The HTML/SWF files are fine, it’s just not working on the PDF.

We note that publishing to PDF does not separate the overlayed caption boxes or images.
Has anyone programmatically been able to have Captivate recognize the idividual caption boxes or overlayed images and have these frames print out as separate slides?

I installed the Captivate 6 Trial version and when I go to run the “exe” file I get: The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application. I am running Windows XP Professional 2002 Service Pack 3 . I have Captivate 4 and 5.5 on my PC with no problem.
There is another person with the same issue as mine but he resolved it by loading it on Windows 98/ME. I need some assistance as we are anxious to try the new product.

ON CP 5.5 when I insert a quiz and leave the back key on I have problems. If I am on the quiz and click back and then go forward it says I have taken the quiz already and all quizzes going forward say the same thing? Has anyone else had this?

Issue – slides notes are cut off (shows only 1-2 sentences) and are not completely displayed for each slide.

We are trying to incoporate variables in the Captivate Email Widget Subject Line to capture the title of the project and a generic email address for our training department .
Although there is confirmation that this can be done it is just putting the variable name in the email subject and not the project information.

Adobe Captivate 5.5 performance is horrible it takes 20 minutes to open a simulation (which was created in 5.5). It also takes forever to save.
My 30 slide simulation takes 350-400 mb ram and this is one of my smaller simulations. The larger ones take 550-750mb ram.
When I exit captivate the process remains in task manager with about 250mb of memory used.
I tried clearing the Adobe Captivate Cached Projects but this did not help. I am running Windows XP Pro SP3 with 3.48GB ram

Whenever I try to record in CP 4, my system crashes. When I spoke to Adobe, they updated my permissions and that worked for 3 recordings. Now my system is crashing again. My company’s tech support is now involved. I have experimented with my virtual memory and allow new .dat files to be written. Also, when trying to update my preferences in CP, I just the same crash. My desktop recording stopped recording audio and video 30 minutes before I pressed the stop button. I’m curious if the recorded data is held in a temp work area or cache? If so, could the recording be retreieve again? Just thinking the remaining 30 minutes may have been captured in a temp work area. What steps could be taken for a rescan of temp work area.

How do I have a text box appear only when a user selects a clickbox (not anytime before). I’ve been doing it where it pauses the slide until a user clicks else where (or on that clickbox) and it continues. However, the clickbox won’t have the text box appear until the timeline shows the text box can appear. But what if a user selects the clickbox before hand- the project won’t show the text box. I’ve tried the “hide” and “show” options for a clickbox action, but it’s not what I want. I’ve tried to change the timeline for the text box, but it appears when it shouldn’t. Any suggestions?

Hi I am using Captivate 5 and I have created a test for my students. The first slide of the test asks the student to enter their full name. The test results are emailed to me. The problem is that the test is identified by the computer station which submitted the test and then I have to check seating charts to determine which student the test belongs to. It would be nice if the information captured in slide 1 where I ask them to fill in their name could be included with the test results. Can you include the content capture from one slide and append it onto a test or quiz or can you suggest a work around? javascript:jQuery(‘#commentform’).submit();

I have created a demo of our software. At the end of the demo, I want the last text box to remain on the screen – it has a brief message and our contact information. I have gone into the project preferences and set the project to “stop” at the end of the demo. I have connected the slide with the end of the slide, such that the little red arrow connects the text box with the end of the slide marker on the graphical display at the bottom of the Captivate 5.5 window. I am at a loss, any suggestions?

Unsure if this will work- but with Captivate 5, after my project, it fades at the end. There’s a setting under preferences where you may opt to not have the project fade in/out at the start and end. I choose not to fade out at the end, and the project just pauses and stays there now. Hope this helps!

I have hyperlinks to various pages on our organization’s intranet. When you close the page, the course is no longer open and you are brought back to the page where you need to relaunch the course. Is there a way to keep the course open so when you close the intranet page, you’ll be where you left ofof.

Hi… I just upgraded my mac to Lion and ever since my workspace will not launch in captivate whenever I open the program. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling captivate and still nothing… NO WORKSPACE. I have to manually open the tool bars each time I reopen the program. Any suggestions? Thanks, Betsy

Captivate 5.5 – after failing a quiz that is set at 80% to pass, the Review quiz button does not let the user review the quiz. I have the file set to show buttons for Continue, Review Quiz and Retake Quiz.
The Review Quiz takes the user back to the first question, which indicates the correct answer and the answer the user selected. HOWEVER, there is no possibility to navigate – no possibility to advance to the next slide. How can I make it so the Review button shows the user the question, with his or her answer choice and the correct choice, AND have navigation?

We recently received a training video created with Captivate 3.
On a computer running Windows 7, the video plays fine.
On a computer running Windows XP, the training video does not play properly. When I double click the video, all I get is an empty playback window , the controls and some background music. No video at all. If I pause the playback, I can click on the progress bar and some graphics pop up and some audio plays but some of the graphics are not rendered.
I looked for information in the FAQ, etc. but did not see this issue mentioned. Are there known issues with Captivate 3 videos playing on XP?

Captivate 5.5 — In all of my training classes that I have built, all of a sudden my links to URLs and documents do not work anymore. This also applies to other projects that were finished and posted previously using 5.0. I absolutely MUST link to a particular web page to display information that is updated by the government. I am getting information from other sources that the problem is with the Flash player, but am getting conflicted stories. Is this true and if so, is Adobe trying to fix this problem between the two products? Any work arounds?

Captivate 5 – Imported Photoshop file with layers but the top layer, a castle, was too contrasty and didn’t match the background as it does in Photoshop. Discovered Captivate doesn’t see Adjustment Layers. Fixed this by merging the layers. HOWEVER, it still doesn’t handle layers well at all. Background and foreground, feathered nicely in Photoshop, have a black sky with ugly fringe around trees. Totally useless for my purposes (showing After Effects/Photoshop compositing)

I have a resolution issue when I select a link and it opens in the same screen. The background resolution is a “rainbow” effect. It is shades of grey versus one shade of grey in he background. How can I fix this?

I am having problems with a custom button set to open URL or file. when I publish to scorm and it creates the swf file, the preview tells me that adobe flash has stopped a pontential dangerous operation…it is trying to open the URL on start up rather than when I click the button? All,
Have a problem with clicking a text button and it does not use the exepcted HTM page.
Bassically I took an exising Captivate 5 project and have been changing “open a file” to “open a project” because it would seem more logical for the sub-project to create the htm with the desired name and pass that back to the parent-project. Maybe my understanding is faulty here.
At any rate I change a sub-project name to the correct new name and publish both projects with all their changes.
The result is the parent project is still calling the old htm namd and not the newly generated htm with the correct name.
Why is Captivate retaining the old htm name?
If I call the new file directly instead of the project it works!
This seems broken. any suggestions or help appreciated.

We are using a volume license copy of the software here at work. We had the EXACT same issue with Captivate 4. however, there was a fix that was available for version 4 (found here: http://blogs.adobe.com/rjacquez/2009/07/licensing_error_fix_in_adobe_c.html ) that does not work for 5.5.
Is there a new fix for userdiceng.exe for 5.5?

Hi,
I have two text entry fields. When I finish typing in one, I want to TAB to the next one. I am using Captivate 5.5. I set up Tab as my keyoard shortcut key in the first text entry object and it runs in Preview mode. When I run it in a browser, TAB takes me to the URL of the browser window instead of the next text entry field. The only work-around I have found is to put the Submit button actually inside the text entry field and make it transparent. Then, when I hit TAB it correctly goes to the next field but it briefly shows a yellow outline of the transparent Submit button. There has to be an easier way! Any suggestions?

I have 7 click boxes on a slide (none are overlapping).
Each Click box does a “jump to” a particular slide.
When published the click boxes does always go to the right “jump to” slide???? After going back to that menu page and clicking the button again, it eventually works

I have to update an older WBT created using an older version of eLearning Suite and Captivate 4.0. I am using eLearning Suite 5.0. the problem I have is that I have to create new Captivate demo movies and runthem using the existing XML and Flash files used to launch the demos. My demos work fine when I preview them, but when I publish to the folder structure and test them being launched from within a Flash movie, I get this annoying “Project created in” Captivate 5.0″ and a play button appears center screen. It plays like in one second increments, not as it was recorded. I suspect a problem with perhaps the ActionScript versions? Captivate is using AS 3.0 and I think the Flash and “.as” files are either AS 1.0 or 2.0. Has anyone else experienced this?

I have Adobe Captivate 5, and I recently upgraded my computer from XP to 7. Captivate worked fine until then. Today when I tried to record the screen, things appeared to work fine until I clicked End and the screen capture slides opened in Captivate. My mouse movements and audio narration are present until the moment I clicked my mouse during the recording, then the frames simply stop. I’ve tried changing settings, opening the program in Administrator mode, updating Captivate, rebooting… nothing has helped. My next step is to uninstall and reinstall, but I don’t hold out much hope for that, either. Can anyone help? I’m an instructional developer, and I depend heavily on Captivate in order to do my job.

1.) When I select File > Preview > In Web Browser (in Captivate 5.5), at the end of the course the user answers 10 quiz questions and if they get an 80% or above, they continue to get their certificate of completion. The web link to the certificate of completion appears in another pop web browser using this method.
2). If I run the HTML file in the directory where I sent all the published output and get an 80% or above, the link to the other webpage to get their certificate does not popup. Why not?

When I try to insert an updated version of a PowerPoint 2003 presentation in a Captivate 5 project, it only recognises 13 out of the 18 slides. All the 4 slides I changed plus the title slide are not recognised; Captivate states ’13 out of 13 slides’ to select from.

I have a recording that has a significant amount of dead space at the beginning and end. I have Flash CS3 on my machine but am using Captivate 5. Is there a way to clip out these areas without using Flash as the movie editor? (The session was recorded in Full Motion mode which, I am finding out now, could have been a mistake.)
Also, is there a way to convert a movie recorded in full motion to the slide-based version?

Hi Amy,
You can edit the FMR clip in the Timeline using the FMR editor in the Property Inspector (Properties > FMR Edit Options).
After recording in the FMR mode, you cannot convert it into a slide-based model.

Could you explain the way to add comments – do not see a code in the tables with the questions? I have a lot of them. In the first question of Upgrade, there is a typo: the converted project in CP5 will have the extension CPTX, not CPTL (template). If issues while converting, it helps to check if the original CP4 is not corrupt when setting AS to AS3, because sometimes this happens.
How to end a recording: would add that it is possible to change the shortcut key from End into another one using Preferences, Recording, Keys.
Answer to ‘Import slides’ Functionality is no longer there in Captivate 5 because this version supports tabbed files (Multiple Documents Interface). You have to use copy/paste now to import slides.
#93 You should warn that deleting the Preferences folder deletes all customizations! In some cases clearing the cache will solve the problem without losing any customization.
Have a lot more answers, would like to find an easier way to reference them to the questions.

We can not edit “Captivate Default” playbar because the FLA file for this is not available.
But we can make changes in the playbars other than “Captivate Default”.
But you need to have Adobe Flash pro installed on your system in order to edit the FLA file.
You can find FLA files for the playbars at :
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 5\Templates\PlaybackFLA\AS2
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 5\Templates\PlaybackFLA\AS3
After making changes you can publish it as a new swf file and you need to paste it at :
C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 5\lang-locale\Gallery\Playbars\AS3

There are lot of cases wherein while importing powerpoint presentation it gives an error message “the file may be damaged” it doesn’t matter whether the PPT made in Office 2003,2007,2010 or whether the slides contains animation or not it gives an error msg tried and tested it in both Win & Mac, there is a workaround wherein we can split those slides and then import it however it is not accepted all the time.at last what we figuredout that no issues with any presenation but there might be something wrong with Captivate import.

By default, it takes the actual path from where you are picking up the file but after that you need to use relative path in reference to the current directory.

In cp4 we have if you have to add animation you can click on the animation button on the left menu bar in your workspace but in cp5 we have to goto insert–>animation slide.So CP5 do not give you a direct button in your workspace to directly click and insert an animation,its couple of steps process due to new look of CP5 and few customer’s are not happy with this.

You can also publish your project in f4v format and then convert it to flv format using Adobe Media Encoder which is supported by LMS.

In Captivate 5, if customer uses the text entry box in his slide and he tries to enter the correct answer fast, it does not work and if he types the answer slowly it does work. Even if we go to the properties of text entry box and in the options tab uncheck validate user’s output, it does not work.
However, unchecking the validate user’s output option works if it is CP4

It works all the times,its just an odd case its not working for your customer,make sure in the properties in general ,there is a option that says “on focus lost” and it should be no action or try and recreate preferences and it should work.

Hi Iesha,
It is happening because in Captivate 5 the time difference between the two key pressed is 500ms.
If you are trying to insert the input faster than that then it will not be able to trigger the event.

I created a project on Captivate 5, Win 7 -32 bit that contains 255 slides, using Automatic recording in Demo mode with no audio.So the whole project just have this video and there is no images, there are no special characters in the project. Now when i preview the project, i get an error message : “Swf compilation failed”. I upadated Captivate and there are no updates available. I isntalled the patch, still no luck. I tired a test project, it works fine. I tried copying and pasting 110 slides in a blank project, it works fine. When i try to paste more than 110 slides, say 125, agin i get an error for swf compilation failed.
I went to forums and find few workarounds like donot use special characters in the project and donot exceed Text captions more than 111.
Is it true that i need to use these number of text captions, because i am using 250 text captions.

If Captivate 5.0 is not getting launched and error “Failed to Launch application” comes with error code “0xc015002″. Then this is possibly due to “Microsoft Visual c++ 2010 Redistributable” not installed on windows.

In captivate 5 while creating a quiz slide for rating scale(likeert) if the options(agree,disagree,neutral,somewhat agree etc) are shrinked to a small size,the positioning gets disturbed when they are moved back to the original size again and the options comes on top of each other….

Cannot Activate / Deactivate Product.
Reason : Firewall Blocking/ Network Security issue, try to ping activate.adobe.com and keep the port 443 vacant over cmd prompt.
At times Deactivate option appears in AOO/LWS Serialized products but it should not.
Possible Resolution : Go to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\Etc\hosts rename the hosts file and then relaunch the product .

In case Reporting Shows 0/1 Quiz Report status, go to source project > Check if tehre is any Standard interactive Object like >Click Box,Text Box, Button , Select the Object and in its properties Uncheck > Reporting >Include in Quiz, and it would not count in Quiz Results!

I published the project on lms and enrolled myself for the course.If i close the module without completing it, it gives the status “Complete”.
how can i get the status as ” incomplete”. Initially it seemed like the issue is with lms, but when we use module which includes quiz it gives the same
status : “complete” which could be corrected by going to The project which has quiz , you can go to the edit>preferences>quiz>reporting and check quiz results only.
But what changes do you need to make to get the status : “incomplete” for a project without quiz??

We can email a copy of the certificate at the end of Captivate project through Microsoft Outlook but I’m curious to know if it is possible that you can email a copy of the certificate at the end of a captivate immediately without having to go through “Microsoft outlook”.Suppose you may not have Microsoft Office installed and you want the output in your personal email address.

I like the text to speech feature that captivate integrates but i want the speakers there (Kate and Paul) to use a different pronunciation and diction of words as they speak because the way they pronounce words doesn’t match the requirements of my users and are are generally misunderstood and misinterpreted. By doing this i want to make my project more user friendly and to be understood by all. Any suggestions ????

I tried to print a certificate in Captivate 4.0 and it worked fine but when I use Captivate 5.0 there is no Print option which is quite confusing and there is a button when your trying to publish the certificate and it doesn’t work.The only option is to print it use the print option a browser but it is going to print extra stuff with it. My question is in Captivate 5.0 there is no print option so if a user wants to print something what he/she will do?
2. In captivate 4.0 print option is there but in Captivate 5.0 why it is not there?

There is a Print widget coming with Captivate 5. Have you tried that?
To insert a widget, click Window > Widget and Captivate should list the widgets for you to choose.
You may find you need to also click the little Folder Icon and browse to the Gallery/Widgets folder in order to see the available widgets.

While inserting an certificate widget, we don’t have an option for inserting current date in any Course Completion Certificate. However we had this option in Cp 4.0 for Course Completion Certificate.
We have an option of using current date in Award Certificate but not in course completion certificate.
Any suggestions on this? It’s like a reduction of feature for customer in a the new version of product.

To insert current date in any course Completion certificate in Cp 5.0 ,you need to go into widget properties and select the course duration.
As soon as you will refresh the dates,during publishing the current date will be mentioned.

Whenever we import pptx (office 2010/office 2007)file into captivate, it always converts it into ppt(office 2003 compatible), so anything which is there in latest versions of power point would be retained. You can refer :

Hi Anjali,
At the time of importing the powerpoint presentation into captivate, there are two options for the Advanced Slide:
1) On Mouse Click
2) Automatically
If you select “On mouse click”, it will automatically add the click box on each and every slide, but at the time of preview and publish it would not effect your output.

You can import Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 slides into an Adobe Captivate 5 project. During the import, Adobe Captivate automatically converts the slides from .pptx to .ppt format (if a converter is available, or if PPT 2007/2010 is available).
Best practice: Create a backup of the MS PPT 2010 project before importing it into Adobe Captivate or while importing, uncheck the ‘Linked’ option in the Convert PowerPoint Presentations dialog box. By doing so, you retain a ‘good’ copy of the source just in case the Adobe Captivate project gets corrupted due to unsupported functionalities.

Delete the current set of preferences in Captivate and relaunch. A fresh set of preferences is automatically created when the project opens.
1) Close Captivate.
2) Delete the Captivate 5 or the preferences folder at the following location(s):

- on Vista/Win7:C:Users\AppDataLocalAdobeCaptivate 5
- on MAC: /Users//Library/Preferences/

3) Relaunch Captivate.

Use Window > Timeline option to adjust the appearance timings of text and graphic objects on the slide.
The Timeline header shows time, in seconds (1s for 1 second, 2s for 2 seconds, and so on), so you see exactly when objects appear. You can simply drag any odject and adjust its appearance on the slide accordingly.

For Ex : You want text and graphic to appear after a few seconds, then in timeline you need drag and change the starting position of these object :

Open the project in Cp 5 and save. It happens that a few features or objects might get distorted, but then you can adjust them from timeline or properties, they are saved as .cptx extension

Directly updating the Windows Installer may not be the resolution always.
I would recommend checking the logs created and proceed as per the errors seen in logs. In case the update installation logs indicate issues with the windows installer service, then the above mentioned patch would be useful.
