Adobe Captivate 4 Installation Issues on Microsoft Windows XP
Some Adobe Captivate 4 users on XP have problems installing the product. It might be because the Windows registry is corrupt or has incorrect permissions.
You could see following problems in such a case -
1)Captivate fails to install properly.
2)While doing audio import/record you get "Unable to decode / import the selected wav/mp3 file" as error message.
3)Audio recording , calibration or editing does not work.
4)Fullmotion recording does not start .
Solution:
You can use SubInAcl tool from Microsoft to try fixing the permission issues in the Windows Registry.
Close all instances of Adobe Captivate and do the following steps -
1)Download the SubInAcl tool from Microsoft Download Center and install it.
2)Download this zip file
3)Extract the zip file in a temporary folder. You will get two files - restoreRegPermCP4.bat, restoreCP4regentries.bat
4)Copy the restoreRegPermCP4.bat to the folder which has SubInAcl.exe installed. Typically this would be at C:\Program Files\Windows Resource Kits\Tools\.
5)Double click to run the restoreRegPermCP4.bat file.
6)Copy the restoreCP4regentries.bat to the folder in which Captivate 4 is installed. Typically it is at C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 4
7)Open command prompt and navigate to that folder.
8)type restoreCP4regentries.bat and press enter.
9)Make sure that all the messages that popup say "DllRegisterServer in 'some dll name' Succeeded"
This should have fixed the registry issues and things should work fine.
Keep Captivating :)

Will a similar fix be made available for Vista users? I was able to successfully run the earlier DLL fix on my Vista machine, which enabled me to import and create audio, but I'm still having problems previewing and editing audio in Captivate, and editing Closed Caption timing.

WOW! I was looking for this solution for 2 days and finally got it. I had all of the issues mentioned happening in Captivate for me:
"You could see following problems in such a case -
1)Captivate fails to install properly.
2)While doing audio import/record you get "Unable to decode / import the selected wav/mp3 file" as error message.
3)Audio recording , calibration or editing does not work.
4)Fullmotion recording does not start ."
This worked great as a solution for me. I will link to this solution on my blog!

Whenever I add a text entry box or a question to a slide, captivate hangs up and freezes. I end up having to ctrl+alt+delete and restart captivate. It doesn't do this when I add things like text animations. It is very frustrating. Why does it do this?

Are there similar issues reported for Captivate 3? If so, is there a similar fix?
Here is my post on Adobe forums:

The audio editor will not launch at all in Cp3. Perhaps there is a conflict of some sort, because I have CS4 installed?

Having trouble downloading and opening captivate files on my vista comptuer. When I select a file to open captivate acts as if it is opening the file and then nothing - blank screen. Yet the file name is in the top file name tool bar.
Anyone have any suggestion on what is going on here and the solution?
Thanks,
Frustrated in Captivate.

I am running Vista 64 bit and Adobe Captivate 4. I get the 'unable to decode error' and followed the steps outlined above. None of the .dll files updated. I am unsure what a previous individual had something else. I'v had IT folks check it out and same result.
Any guidance?

When installing Captivate from adobe download, it gets correctly extracted to the desktop. Running the installation in trial mode, after a short period, the installation progreses up to 1/4 the bar, the a blue screen and a crash!
I removed everything, downloaded again and I get the same. No way I can try Captative!
What to do?

Bear in mind that you will need to run cmd as Administrator.
Click Start and in the search box type "cmd". At the top, right-click cmd.exe and click "Run As Administrator". Then navigate to the Captivate 4 folder and type "restoreCP4regentries.bat" and press enter.

I am working on Vista a 32 bit and I keep on getting error messages. I tried to run as admin in the command mode and received this error message
The module "c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Captivate 4\NSAudio.dll
was loaded but the call to the DllRegisterServer failed with error code 0x8007005.
I then did this:
Audio play back and USB mic issue in Captivate 4
We found that in some of Vista machines with Real tek or Sigma tel sound card audio inside captivate doesn't play back. Some customers who use USB mic for recording narration also observed that device is not getting detected by Captivate. These issues were reported more on Vista and we have one solution to address both the problems. - replacing the audio dll's , Steps
Close Captivate 4 if it is open.
Download the file kept at https://share.acrobat.com/adc/document.do?docid=a14e1bd9-dc10-4456-9cd2-44489809b78e
Go to your Captivate 4 install folder (ex: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Cativate 4)
Rename nsaudio.dll as nsaudio.dll.bak or anything which doesn't have a dll extension
Copy the file from step 2 to Captivate 4 install folder
rename it as nsaudio.dll
Start Captivate 4
Try to play the audio /use USB - it should go fine
But this did not work. Then I did this:

BUT I AM STILL getting error messages. The problem is that I am working in Vista and the original error messages when I imported my ppt into captivate that the system did not support the mp3/wav file. It did not as I imported it nor did it support when I moved into text to speech. Help! I paid a lot of money for both systems and they should work!!!

I tried this, but am still hitting some snags. I can edit the audio on a specific slide, but when go to Audio, Edit, Project, Captivate just sits there with the hourglass icon for upwards of 30 minutes. Can ANYBODY help me out with this issue? Thanks.

I downloaded Cap 4 to an Asus dual quad with a realtek HD audio.
I downloaded the patch and it worked fine. Except the feedback has static now. In fact it has some worbble or voice sound fluctuations. When I check the record volume setting, it continues to advance to maximum. Resetting the volume control and it automatically maxes out. Any thoughts?

I had this problem too. I kept trying to run the restoreCP4regentries solution unsuccessfully. Finally, I ran cmd.exe as an administrator and redid the restoreCP4regentries solution and it worked!
