My Favorite Adobe Captivate 6 Features and a Short Tutorial on How to Create a Play/Pause Button

Guest Blog by: Sara Carpenter, President and Founder at Qurve Learning.

At Qurve Learning, we create e-learning programs that help patients prepare for medical procedures. Our programs are fully narrated and use photos, illustrations, animation, and video to make health information easy to understand and follow.

We’ve used Adobe’s E-Learning Suite since it was first released a few years ago and have upgraded regularly. We recently took Captivate 6 for a test spin and am pleased with the new enhancements. Here are few of our favorite features:

  • Smart Shapesthese gems can be used as buttons! And best of all, when they’re used as a buttons, they can be displayed for the rest of the project! This feature is allowing us to create custom play controls which match our graphic design and are present for the entire project.
  • High Definition Screencasts – the new high definition screen casts are beautiful! We use the screen casts to show patients who have limited computer experience how to use our programs. The new screen casts are so much more crisp and smooth – and they’re easy to create and edit.
  • Actors – We’ve been purchasing e-learning actors for years. It’s a delight to now have a collection of actors built in with Captivate 6. And it’s affordable and easy to purchase more (including medical images) from the eLearning brothers: http://elearningtemplates.com/elearning-people-cutouts/

These are just a few of our favorite features.  And here’s a quick tutorial which uses the new high definition screencast feature to show you how to create a play/pause button using the new Captivate 6 smart shapes.

    Hi There,
Is it not possible to skip step 3 and apply the AA directly to the smart shapes you created? Thanks!

  • radrave

Theoretically, wouldn’t it be possible to eliminate step 3 and simply attach the AA to the smart shapes?

The post title made it seem that this would have something new in it for me to discover. Unfortunately this was misleading and I feel cheated now. I know how to create a separate play and pause button, the title of this post and video makes it seem like you will show us how to have a single button that changes between play and pause depending on what state the playback is in.
I’m very disappointed, you should adjust the title of the post and video so others don’t come here seeking that which is not actually here.

Hi Alan, there can be different ways to create a toggle button and this was one of them. You can refer this post by Lieve to learn about few other ways and follow the path you like best:

      Hope this helps!

Audio does not resume after using Play/Pause button in the tutorial. With Flash audio returns on next slide but does not return at all with HTML5 publish. Any ideas?

To correct audio not resuming with Play/Pause buttons when publishing to HTML5:
    (1) create currentFrame variable with default value of 1,
    (2) assign currentFrame with cpInfoCurrentFrame value after cpCmdPause action in actPause and
    (3) assign cpCmndGoToFrameAndResume with currentFrame at end of actPlay.

Thank you, Sara. This is exactly the information I needed. Very well and clearly explained.

When you go back to a slide I paused then played, the play button is showing. Is there a way to do this without adding an action to every page?

  • Morgan

I need Help! It seems to be working fine for me in HTML5 output but not regular web browser.

In a regular web browser it works well on first slide but not the rest. Has anyone run in to this or have any other insight on creating a more solid and versitile custom playbar?

    • Dr. Pooja Jaisingh

Hi Morgan, can you please share the project with us at CaptivateHelp@adobe.com and we will look into the issue.

      • morgan

        Hi Dr.,
Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! How do I share it with you guys?
I have not yet published it to an LMS. Could I send you a link to a zipped file?

        • Dr. Pooja Jaisingh

Upload the Captivate project to any file sharing service and share the link with us.

          • morgan

OK, I sent a dropbox link to “CaptivateHelp@adobe.com” with the subject ” Help with pause/play button”

          • Dr. Pooja Jaisingh

Thanks Morgan. I’ve received the file.. will get back to you with the resolution soon.

          • morgan

            wonderful!

          • morgan

Any idea when I might hear back? Was hoping to show my client something on monday. Thanks!

          • Dr. Pooja Jaisingh

Morgan, you should hear about it early next week.

          • morgan

            Thanks You!

          • morgan

Do you know if I will recieve an email or do I just have to keep checking here?

          • Dr. Pooja Jaisingh

Yes Morgan, you’ll receive an email from the team. Thanks for your patience.

          • morgan

            Did you get the link?

  • vpaul

The Images, I create, I can’t tell how to change the name like you have with ButtonPlayGraphic1. I highlight the graphic, yet, the right menu under properties there is no field list under the word Group. It just has a box with Use as Button (which is unchecked.) How do I name the image? How do I get that field to show?

    • Dr. Pooja Jaisingh

You should be seeing a Name field where you need to populate the new name. If you are not able to find it, write to me at pjaising at adobe dot com with a screenshot and i’ll help you.

    • vpaul

Thank you for your help. You are so kind and helpful. I figured out a solution. Yeah.

      • Dr. Pooja Jaisingh

        Great! :)
