A Step-by-step guide to create an Interactive eBook

Interactive eBooksA few months back, I had created an interactive eBook for iPad using different tools like Adobe InDesign, Adobe Edge Animate, Adobe Presenter, Adobe Captivate, Adobe Photoshop, and Digital Publishing Suite, and wish I could add a few more tools to this list… LOL

To be true, I had no experience whatsoever to create InDesign documents, Edge animations, and DPS folios when I started working on the eBook, but the videos available on Adobe TV and tutorials offered on Lynda.com came to rescue and really helped me complete my task. Now it’s my turn to give back and share my learnings with all of you :)

So here’s a step-by-step guide to create an interactive eBook. I’ve divided this guide in six steps to make it convenient for you to jump to the step you want to learn about.

Step 1: Setting up the InDesign document

The first step to create an eBook is to create the artwork that you will be using for background design, animations, interactions, etc. and set up the InDesign document. You need to add the tentative number of pages in your eBook and create Master layouts with common imagery for the eBook. Let’s look at Continue reading…

Shared Actions- Now Re-Use Advanced Actions across your Captivate projects

“The biggest difference between time and space is that you can’t reuse time.”

Need a better solution to create similar advanced action again and again?
Ever wondered how to use a specific advanced action in multiple projects?
Are you a fan of advanced actions?

If you say YES to any of the above, then read on.

Many times you had to create multiple advanced actions which have same set of actions, but contain different set of objects/slides/audio files.
For example, if you have to execute Show/Hide/Apply Effect actions with different objects, the only way was to create many advanced actions.

Let’s consider a project with five buttons. When each button is clicked, you want to show/hide different objects and play different audio.

To achieve this:

  • Prior to Adobe Captivate 7:   You had to create five different advanced actions. If you needed these advanced actions in two different projects, you had to create ten more additional advanced actions.
  • Now, with Adobe Captivate 7: All you have to do is to create a single Shared Action and use it any number of times within the project or across projects.

Say Hello to Adobe Presenter 9 – And Hello to Video, Audio and PowerPoint Everywhere You Need It

cropped-Presenter-9_facebook-banner_2.jpgToday Adobe introduced the new Adobe Presenter 9, a fantastic tool for anyone to create interactive content and videos. Presenter has a long tradition of innovation. If you are in business, education or training, the new Presenter has a LOT to offer you.

What does it do?
At it’s core, Adobe Presenter allows anyone to easily convert Microsoft PowerPoint projects to either videos or interactive applications. Along the way you can add a wide variety of ‘no programming required’ interactions and quizzes, add your voice and even add amazing video from the comfort of your desk. Adobe Presenter installs right inside Microsoft PowerPoint, so you’ll have no problem creating content, and it adds additional tools that are super simple to use, and that help you add great audio, beautiful video, awesome animation and engaging interactions – all without any programming.

Who Uses It?
Adobe Presenter 9 is used by a lot of people in many different fields. Not surprising, because so is Microsoft PowerPoint. Here are some of the biggest groups of users. Trainers, Instructional Designers, Subject Matter Experts and eLearning Authors. These folks use Adobe Presenter to easily create Quizzes and content and get it out to their learners quickly. Adobe Presenter is also very popular with Sales, Marketing and Business Managers. Adobe Presenter features a revolutionary video tool – it’s totally intuitive to use and saves time and money while opening the door to social video creation for everyone in enterprise. Traditional educators also love Adobe Presenter for a couple of really big reasons. It makes video creation so simple that students from Kindergarten to College can easily use it to create fantastic videos. That builds a technology bridge for 21st century skills that help teachers meet their educational objectives and provide 21st century skills experience for all of their students without missing a beat. Teachers also use Adobe Presenter 9 to flip their classroom – putting lectures online, so that they have more time to spend during class working directly with students.

What’s new in Adobe Presenter 9?
I’m incredibly excited about the new features in Adobe Presenter 9. Top of my list is Learner Collaboration and Intervention. These brilliant new features combine modern social media experiences with innovative tools in learner tracking.

Learner Collaboration provides you with a sensational way to introduce conversation, questions and discussion into your published course modules and Presenter Projects. Whether you want learners to interact with instructors or potential customers to interact with you and your team you’ll find that the collaboration tools are ideal for hosting social interaction. Educators will especially enjoy this option as it effectively re-introduces class discussion into courses and it makes the experience even more powerful by tracking the interactions that students have with you and one another, encouraging robust communication. You’ll be able to evaluate student participation and can even automatically include it in the course grading criteria.

Learner Intervention extends the social collaboration experience and integrates the traditional quiz outcomes to create a modern and powerful solution for analyzing the student learning outcomes in your course. Just click on the handy dashboard link from your authoring ribbon (right inside PowerPoint) and you’ll see real-time data displayed in easy to understand charts and graphs, letting you see first hand how well your learners are doing on every aspect of a course. You can easily click through to individual students and get an immediate sense of which students are doing well, and which students need additional attention from you. Finally educators have the power to detect early potential problems with learning and to intervene early – improving the chance that the student will meet and even exceed their expectations.

Another amazing new feature in Adobe Presenter 9 is the speech to text & annotation enabled personal video creation tool. You’ll be making your own custom YouTube videos in seconds with this super-simple video tool. It was awarded the prestigious CODiE award in 2013 for ‘Best Video Tool’ and after just a few minutes you’ll see why. The video creation solution seems almost magical. It easily generates sophisticated ‘studio quality’ videos with animated transitions, professional looking titles and lower third graphics and sizzling hot pan and zoom effects. With just a few buttons you feel like a video pro and as you think of the thousands of dollars you’re saving bypassing expensive studios and recording sessions – you’ll feel like a wealthy video pro. In every field there are tools that we remember. The ones that signal the move from creation by a few super-geeks with specialized skills to creation by the rest of us. With the video tools in Adobe Presenter 9, you’re bound to see that video is no longer only for super geeks. We can all make great looking, professional videos and we don’t need tons of money or time to do it.

Also new in Adobe Presenter 9, Drag and Drop Interactions. Now you can create drag and drop quiz questions without any programming, right inside Microsoft PowerPoint. It’s simple and quick and you’ll be able to easily design and create all kinds of cool interactions.

One of my favorite new features is the scenario builder. Using the scenario builder Presenter will generate complex multi-path navigated scenarios for you, and all you need to do is drop in the text. Whether you’re creating sales training, soft skills solutions or just experimenting with scenario based learning – the scenario tool will save you time and hassle by solving many of the most challenging problems for you.

Accessibility has been a crucial issue for most of us for quite a while now, and around the world the expectations to maintain accessible material online continues to escalate. Adobe Presenter 9 contains many Accessibility enhancements to help you easily create 508 and WCAG 2.0 compatible content. From support for screen readers via arrows and tab keys to speech to text automatically generated after video recordings Presenter 9 has powerful Accessibility tools to support your content creation needs.

Every day now the world seems to get more mobile with it’s computers. It’s become an expectation that content we create will run well on mobile devices and Adobe Presenter 9 meets and exceeds that expectation. Using Presenter 9 you can simply publish your file as a SWF for playback in online browsers, and the free and terrific Adobe Presenter Mobile App (both for iOS and for Android) will automatically play back that Flash file on iPads, iPods, iPhones and Android devices.

These are just a few of the many amazing new features and enhancements in Adobe Presenter 9. If you haven’t tried it out – what on earth are you waiting for? Download your very own free trial copy of Adobe Presenter 9 here; http://www.adobe.com/products/presenter/

Topic: Moving from Knowledge Hoarding to Knowledge Sharing with Adobe Presenter Video Creator

Date and time: Wednesday, 17th July, 2013 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM US/Pacific

Description: There is a fundamental problem that exists in the typical business workplace today. Chances are that you or someone in your office is already painfully aware of it. We’ve seen an explosion in the number of people whose jobs are directly related to their expertise, and for whom ‘what they know’ has become a kind of ‘insurance’ plan.

Have you ever heard a colleague proclaim “If I’m the only one who knows how to do this, ‘they’ can never fire me.”

We’ve all heard similar comments and perhaps even nodded along, or said the words ourselves. But what is the actual cost of this kind of environment of knowledge hoarding. Research in fact suggests that it cuts much deeper than just the upfront issues with bottle necks and heavy retraining costs. The most serious costs of a knowledge hoarding culture are that the institution is stifled when it comes to innovation.

In this session Dr. Allen Partridge will share research on Knowledge sharing and demonstrate how Adobe Presenter Video creator can close the technology gap and facilitate a knowledge sharing culture in your organization.

Everything You Need for eLearning with Amazing Adobe Captivate 7

CP7_boxshot_3in_shadowAlready praise is flying in for Adobe Captivate 7, “Is it worth the jump? Positively YES“, says Jim Liechliter of CaptivateDev.com. I wholeheartedly agree with Jim. The team has described this release of Captivate as ‘Everything You Need to Create Anything in eLearning’ – and it’s a completely appropriate description. There are some positively wonderful surprises for eLearning developers who’ve become accustomed to Adobe Captivate’s powerful toolset, and there are some incredible new features and enhancements for everyone who needs an eLearning authoring tool.

Fast and Easy – You’ll have beautiful content in minutes
First and foremost, Captivate 7 is easy, easy, easy to use. The numbers are in and Captivate users love using Themes, Characters, Smart Shapes and most of all, Smart Learning Interactions to create beautiful content out of the box. Smart Learning Interactions are an incredible tool you’ll only find in Adobe Captivate. Just choose an interaction and then add your own text, sound and images. You get fantastic, fully animated, fully interactive, games, charts, learner activities and interactions that work where you need them – both on desktop and laptop computers, and on mobile devices via HTML5. Adobe Captivate 7 ADDS 15 Brand new Smart Learning Interactions to the bundle, and enhancements for the original 10! Some highlights: A YouTube Interaction, to put YouTube content right inside your course, and even navigate to a precise time within that video, A Web Interaction, to include entire Websites, online or offline in your course, and a Note interaction – with it, your learners can jot down notes about the course for their own reference.

Drag and Drop is as easy as 1-2-3
Only in Captivate, Drag and Drop is easy as 1-2-3 and like virtually everything in Adobe Captivate, no programming required. Instructional Designers often recognize that physical manipulation of items provides an opportunity to meet a wide variety of learning objectives. Adobe Captivate 7 provides an incredibly simple to use – and insanely powerful way to create Drag & Drop interactions for your learners.

Easily Convert PowerPoint (PPT/PPTX) to HTML5
With Adobe Captivate 7, Adobe is providing a simple method to convert Microsoft PowerPoint files into HTML5 easily. Just import the file into Captivate 7, then Publish the document as HTML5. Poof, PowerPoint to HTML5 – and best of all, your text, bullets, animations, SmartArt, and even Triggers are retained. This one feature alone would make Captivate 7 well worth the cost, but Captivate has hundreds of amazing features like this.

Fantastic Tools for Education
Educational use of eLearning hits a new high with this release of Adobe Captivate. Now MathMagic is BUILT RIGHT IN! That’s right, math and science teachers, engineers, and other assorted geniuses around the world are having a collective celebration because Adobe Captivate 7 includes an incredibly powerful and totally familiar Equation Editor. Just ‘Insert Equation’ and use the built-in MathMagic Editor to bring your formulas to your learners with ease. (I bet you’re starting to see what I mean about Everything you Need.)

A GIFT for Importing Quiz Databases of Any Size
Also a hit with Educators … Import massive Quizzes with support for Moodle GIFT format file imports. Moodle’s GIFT format is commonly adopted by quiz database translators, and now you can take a GIFT format quiz database and import it into Captivate, INSTANTLY creating a fully formatted, grade generating, review page optional quiz. And I do mean instant. With added support for ALL Quiz Question Types in HTML5 that means that you are just seconds away from converting your entire Quiz Database into an incredibly beautiful online module when you are using Adobe Captivate 7. I am doing an eSeminar on this topic tomorrow, Wednesday, June 5, at 10:00 AM US Pacific. You can register for FREE, here.

Hello Tin Can, I’m Captivate
They make an adorable couple – Adobe Captivate 7 has Tin Can support and even includes a custom Moodle template to make configuring Captivate to report to SCORM in Moodle is easier than ever. In fact, with built in Scorm.com drivers Adobe Captivate 7 will work out of the box with virtually any SCORM compliant or AICC compliant LMS. But why stop there? Adobe Captivate 7 will report your data to Adobe Connect, or to Acrobat.com. You can even report your data to a lightweight LMS (Alternative Reporting) that is included in your Adobe Captivate 7 Goodies. There is simply no more versatile tool for reporting your data to an LMS. And hey, that headache you get when you think about an LMS – Adobe Captivate 7 is like a jumbo painkiller for LMS headaches. Team Captivate is on the spot whenever problems arise – just jump into our incredible forums at captivate.adobe.com and you’ll find help in a Flash.

Powerful Accessibility Enhancements, Including support for WCAG2.0 and ADA
Adobe Captivate 7 is pushing Accessibility to new heights. The content you create can easily be made Accessible to all of your users. We know that many in Education and Government face serious limitations when it comes to course development and Accessibility, so we’ve created intuitive and powerful tools to help you build courses that meet the needs of every learner. I’m giving an eSeminar on Accessibility in Adobe Captivate 7 ‘Understanding Accessiblity Standards for eLearning‘ featuring Adobe’s Greg Pisocky, Accessibility Specialist on June 12, at 10:00 AM US Pacific. You can Register HERE to attend the live session FREE.

But Wait, there’s still more!
Captivate 7 includes support for system audio recording, sharing of Advanced Actions between projects, and even includes the Multi-sco packager! There are enhancements to the A3C (Adobe Captivate Course Companion) which include the ability to facilitate in course communication between learners and educators, as well as between learners.
