New import experience with Raw Technology Preview in Lightroom for mobile Android 2.2

Lightroom has always been about helping you get the most out of your images, and with Lightroom for Android 2.2, you can now import raw files directly into your Android device. The Raw Technology Preview makes it possible for you to connect your camera to your Android device and import photos directly from your camera. With this Technology Preview now available for Android (released for iOS in July of this year), you can capture, edit, and share raw photos, in full resolution, and have access to them wherever you are in the world. — Lightroom Journal

Lightroom for mobile (Android) was recently updated to version 2.2 in November, 2016. This major update for the Android users brings ‘Raw Technology Preview’ on Lightroom for mobile — you can now directly import raw photos from your professional camera and apply lens corrections, camera profile corrections, and add copyright information on photos while importing them in the Lightroom mobile app. The raw file support is available for all the files that are supported by Adobe Camera Raw! For a full list, see Cameras supported by Camera Raw.

Import photos from a plugged-in camera with PTP support

Directly Import photos from a plugged in camera

Lightroom for mobile (Android) now supports Picture-transfer-protocol (PTP). This means that you can now directly import photos (including raw images) from your professional camera by connecting it with your mobile device using a supported USB OTG (on the go) cable. If your Android mobile device has a USB C-type connector/port, Adobe recommends using a USB C-type OTG cable instead of C-type adapters to connect the DSLR camera.

Here are the broad steps to import photos into Lightroom mobile app from a plugged-in camera:

Step1 After connecting your camera to the mobile device, tap the USB connection notification that appears in the Notification bar. Ensure that you set PTP mode for the USB connection.

Step2 In the app picker on your Android device, choose the Lightroom app for the connected USB device. If your Android device does not show the app picker at this point and always opens the USB connection with another app installed on your Android device, you need to clear that app as the default app in your device Settings. Read Unable to import photos into Lightroom for mobile (Android) from a plugged-in camera for details.

Step3 The import interface of Lightroom for mobile now displays the thumbnails of all images from the plugged in camera. In the import interface, select photos that you want to import into Lightroom for mobile.Tap Add Photos at the bottom of the screen. Did you notice the RAW badge at the upper-right corner of some image thumbnails? It allows you to easily identify the raw images among all the images displayed from your plugged in camera.

Step4 Now, choose a target Collection from your existing Lightroom Collections in which you want to import the selected photos or create a new Collection. Tap Add to <Collection name> at the bottom of the screen.

At this point, Lightroom begins copying the Originals (original image files) from the plugged in camera to your Android device. The Copy to Lightroom dialog displays the progress and notifies you when the copying process is complete. At this point, you can unplug the connected camera. Once the copying process is complete, Lightroom for mobile app begins importing the copied images into the selected Collection. In the Notification bar of your Android device, Lightroom for mobile displays import notifications about the progress and completion status.

You don’t have to wait for completion even if you are importing a large number of files. You can continue to use the Lightroom for mobile app while the import process runs in the background!
