Earth Day and the Power of Personal Connections

Today is Earth Day, and in 2011 we are encouraged by the Earth Day Network to join its “people-powered” campaign of pledging our acts of environmental service, with the goal of reaching a billion Acts of Green by 2012. It’s no secret that as a company, Adobe has been at the forefront of implementing green operating practices – in fact, we were the world’s first business to achieve four Platinum-level certifications for energy and environmental design excellence by the U.S. Green Building Council.

This year I also find myself reflecting on the various ways that our enterprise technology helps organizations leverage green business practices that ultimately help them decrease their environmental footprint, while increasing business efficiency and connecting people across geographies and time zones.

Acrobat solutions allow our customers to reduce the use of paper documents, while Adobe Connect makes it possible for people to collaborate and communicate globally in real time, helping reduce business travel and its related environmental impact.

For example, the U.S. Government Printing Office was able to save 20 million tons of paper over five years by using Acrobat and LiveCycle to generate, authenticate and share documents electronically. Adobe Connect enabled more than 50,000 SAP employees to communicate around the world instantly, reducing the company’s travel by as much as 90%.

And all along we have been focused with our Customer Experience Management platform on delivering highly personalized, engaging online interactions between enterprises and their customers to power great customer experiences that build brand loyalty without all the environmental damage caused by burning fuel for worldwide travel and wasting paper when electronic means would suffice.

That’s why I found it so interesting when I heard recently about an acquaintance who received a personal, handwritten note – not a personalized email – from leading online retailer Amazon.com, thanking him for his business over the past nine years.  That act of personal outreach had a marked impact.  He not only felt valued by Amazon.com after receiving this note, he now associates a human face with the company.

Can this be done in more environmentally friendly ways?  Of course it can.  Record a quick Flash video and send it on to someone you want to thank.  Send them a personalized PDF portfolio complete with pictures of past experiences together.  The Amazon story is about personal touch – about a real person inside a company reaching out to another real person to establish trust and loyalty.  Just because we are using greener means to communicate doesn’t mean we have to lose the essence of one-to-one personal communication.  In fact in many cases the technology allows us to do it more effectively.

This act of a real person at Amazon.com reaching out to a customer in a very personal way underscores the desire for us to connect with each other, even in our always-on, always-connected online business and personal lives.

We have powerful technology that enables us to know our customers and connect across geographies without the need to ever leave our offices — and that’s a great thing. Yet, we shouldn’t forget that behind the technology lie people.

And so on this Earth Day, I’m going to follow the “people-powered” examples of the Earth Day Network and leverage our great technologies to send something personal – you should do the same!

Announcing Adobe Technical Communication Suite 3

Adobe Technical Communication SuiteWe’re excited to announce the next release of Adobe’s end-to-end suite for technical communicators –Adobe Technical Communication Suite 3. The suite lets technical writers, help authors and instructional designers author, enrich, manage, review and “single-click” publish technical information in multiple languages and formats, and to multiple devices.

Included with this release are completely updated versions of the core products –Adobe FrameMaker 10 (template-based authoring/publishing) and Adobe RoboHelp 9 (help and knowledgebase authoring/publishing). The suite is rounded out with Adobe Captivate 5, Adobe Photoshop CS5 and Adobe Acrobat X Pro.

The team has been working hard to incorporate compelling customer feedback. We’ve heard time and again that our customers’ end users are demanding richer, more dynamic and increasingly interactive content. To that end, Technical Communication Suite 3 offers several workflow improvements and usability enhancements. Authors can easily include 3D models, training demos and simulations in their projects and build in access to external sources such as Google search results, blogs, wikis and forums. The software now supports more than 45 video and audio formats and outputs comment- and rating-enabled documentation, driving engagement by encouraging response.

Significantly improved, Technical Communication 3 will help end the long reign of static documentation – our tools are building the next generation of content that will ultimately solve consumer problems.

Welcome to Our Cloud

We’re moving from relying on a single desktop computer, or sharing enterprise-class server resources, to drawing on services in the cloud. What’s more, each of us uses more than one machine. Besides our laptops, we likely have a computer at home, and we have a neat little computer that fits in our pockets, we call a smart phone. As these devices have allowed us to become more connected, the need to be able to exchange documents easily becomes more and more critical to business as well as personal success. There is no longer any reason to tie documents to one machine. We should be able to get access to and retrieve and view those files reliably no matter where we are and no matter what device we are using at the time. And this is where the cloud delivers value. Just a few weeks ago, we announced the new Acrobat X software family, including new cloud services from Acrobat.com. Today, we’re announcing the availability of those new services – Adobe SendNow and Adobe CreatePDF. Both services are ready to help you solve real business and collaboration problems now. New Digital School Collection for K-12 Classrooms and Districts!

Today, we announced the new Adobe Digital School Collection for K-12 students and educators, available for the first time for both Windows® and Macintosh. The bundle includes the recently announced Adobe® Photoshop® Elements 9 and Adobe Premiere® Elements 9 software, as well as Adobe Acrobat® X software, announced yesterday. Adobe Contribute® CS5 and Adobe Soundbooth® CS5 software are also included in the collection.ADSC-2011

Acrobat X: A New World of Document Collaboration & Innovation

Today, we introduced the Adobe Acrobat X software family the next generation of software solutions and services that empowers professionals to innovate and create high-quality content, while driving tighter collaboration and productivity across teams in today’s dynamic business environments.

Acrobat X delivers new guided Actions to simplify multi-step document preparation and publishing processes; completely new customization capabilities in PDF Portfolios to unify multiple file types into a compelling presentation; new document services on Acrobat.com to give individuals the ability to collaborate more efficiently. Integration with Microsoft SharePoint enables consistency of PDF documents across the enterprise; and re-use of content is now easier with higher quality export to Microsoft Word and Excel.
