Adobe Delivers TV Everywhere for Turner Broadcasting

We’ve experienced great success and customer momentum since our launch of Adobe Primetime, the industry’s most advanced TV publishing and monetization platform for programmers and pay-TV service providers. From Comcast to NBC Sports, customers are adopting Adobe Primetime’s video publishing, player, DRM, advertising and/or analytics solutions to deliver TV and reach audiences beyond the living room. It’s all about delivering the content consumers want, seamlessly and securely, when and where they want it.

Today, we’re excited to announce that Turner Broadcasting System, Inc. (TBS, Inc.) is the latest Adobe Primetime customer delivering TV across screens. TBS, Inc. is a leader in driving TV Everywhere adoption and it will be using Adobe Primetime to power its new TNT and TBS apps (iOS and Android) and websites. Cartoon Network, truTV, NBA League Pass, AdultSwim, and others are expected to leverage Adobe Primetime in the near future.

We also released some updated TV Everywhere stats showing that viewing broadcast TV online continues to grow in popularity. Based on our Adobe Digital Index data:

  • The number of authenticated streams increased by 400% in the first six months of the year, compared to the same period in 2012.
  • The average number of unique visitors to sites with online TV content grew nearly seven fold in the first six months of the year, compared to same period in 2012.
  • Adobe Primetime’s authentication technology is now used by more than 50 TV channels powering more than 100 apps and websites across all major device platforms including iOS, Android, Windows 8, Xbox, Roku, Apple TV and SmartTVs.

We also announced a series of technology innovations in Adobe Primetime – including new video analytics and a new cloud DRM service. Now part Adobe Primetime, Adobe Analytics Essentials for Video will improve the viewer experience by giving content owners access to a broad set of data to better understand their digital audience, including viewer engagement with both content and ads. Additionally, the new cloud DRM service will dramatically simplify the deployment of content-protected videos across devices. Adobe Primetime’s DRM component is already being used by major TV programmers and pay-TV service providers worldwide including AT&T, DirectTV, Fox, Scripps Networks, Turner Broadcasting, Walt Disney Pictures, Vudu and others.

Stay tuned for more updates and momentum around Adobe Primetime and TV Everywhere!

Marketing: Fine Art or Blunt Object?

Marketing, at times, can be a blunt object. It can be in your face, intrusive and repetitive. But as more marketing has gone digital, marketers have access to data and insights that allow us to understand our customers better. This brings an opportunity to learn more about our audience and deliver more personalized customer experiences that are better tailored and better timed.

Last week, I had the opportunity to discuss the challenges and opportunities for customer insights and analytics with fellow CMOs John Boris of Shutterfly, and Heidi Melin of Plex Systems, at a Churchill Club talk here in Silicon Valley. A few key takeaways:

  • People want personalized experiences – Consumers want to receive information that is relevant to them and they value personalized experiences.
  • Collaboration is key – It is now more important than ever for organizations to work cross-functionally. We formed a Marketing Insights and Operations group to be a “single source of truth” for customer data and marketing performance here at Adobe. This group consists of Adobe employees from sales, customer support, global marketing and product marketing, and meets to align all marketing data collected across the company.
  • The right data, not just ‘big data’, is a huge opportunity – We use data at every single point in our marketing campaigns to understand campaign effectiveness, mix modeling, media and website optimization, and overall impact and ROI. Developments to customer insights are evolving, and they aren’t slowing down anytime soon. That means big opportunities for innovation. It’s important to know what you’re looking for before you start collecting data to make sure that data is actionable. I like what Fatemeh Khatibloo of Forrester Research, the moderator of our talk, said – “It’s not about big data, it’s about the right data.”

The impact on brands is huge when marketing is personalized for the consumer and online experiences are rewarding, and I believe it makes all the difference. A replay of last week’s talk is below – or you can view it here.  Take a look and let us know what you think.

Additionally, given the rise in digital video consumption, we also published The U.S. Digital Video Benchmark report. The Adobe Digital Index team looked at 19.6 billion video starts on media websites from 2012 to confirm the growth of broadcast video consumption across connected devices. A few key findings include:

  • TV Everywhere adoption increased 12-fold
  • Mobile video viewing grew by 300%
  • Facebook users are seeing twice the level of engagement with video over non-video content

Adobe Summit 2013 – Day One in the Books

Ok yes maybe I work at Adobe and ok yes maybe I’m a tad biased, but I’ve been going to Adobe Summits for I think four years now and dare I say this one is the best? Yes, the food at the opening night party was good. Yes, from an event team’s standpoint things are running smoothly, but from the overall “relevance” standpoint, this year’s Summit has started off super strong.

The social conversations from the event are unparalleled, growing more than 50% when compared to the same timeframe last year. Over 8500 conversations in just the first day put #AdobeSummit at the top of trending Twitter hashtags.

Brad Rencher kicked it all off with the opening keynote session (watch now), which included a thorough demo of Adobe Marketing Cloud by David Nueschler and folks from all five of the Marketing Cloud’s solutions teams. Need a rundown of what’s coming in Marketing Cloud? Check out this week’s news.

The day’s second keynote had its moments too. After Bill Briggs of Deloitte Consulting implored everyone to go beyond “mobile first” and think of “mobile only,” John Battelle interviewed Adam Bain of Twitter about Twitter growth, and paid social media vs organic social media. Good stuff. And the conversation continued to prove to this social marketer (me) that Twitter might be a brand’s best bet for proving ROI in social — paid and organic. Happy to discuss further in the comments. :)

Need some visuals of what the first full day of Summit was all about? Watch the videos below. Short and to the point, with quick looks at what Summitees are experiencing here in Salt Lake City, and be sure to follow all tomorrow’s action: @AdobeSummit and #AdobeSummit.
