Making Animated HTML5 Content

Check out John Nack’s blog where there is a video of Adobe VP Paul Gubbay showing off early looks at some technology that will help designers and developers create better HTML5 animations:

Included are demos of:
- Animating in the new Adobe Edge app (on Adobe Labs)
- Turning that output into an app using PhoneGap
- Using Flash Professional to export animation as HTML
- Running CSS Shaders in WebKit
- Enabling “liquid layout” from InDesign

Go to John’s blog now and watch.

Also, check out a recording of last week’s Financial Analyst meeting to see where these demos were intially shown and to understand how they fit into Adobe strategy moving forward.

Great News for Developers

Apple’s announcement today that it has lifted restrictions on its third-party developer guidelines has direct implications for Adobe’s Packager for iPhone, a feature in the Flash Professional CS5 authoring tool. This feature was created to enable Flash developers to quickly and easily deliver applications for iOS devices. The feature is available for developers to use today in Flash Professional CS5, and we will now resume development work on this feature for future releases.

This is great news for developers and we’re hearing from our developer community that Packager apps are already being approved for the App Store. We do want to point out that Apple’s restriction on Flash content running in the browser on iOS devices remains in place.

Adobe will continue to work to bring full web browsing with Flash Player 10.1 as well as standalone applications on AIR to a broad range of devices, working with key industry partners including Google, HTC, Microsoft, Motorola, Nokia, Palm/HP, RIM, Samsung and others.

Tapping Users Minds, Adobe Launches Adobe Labs Ideas

Adobe recently released a new initiative to go outside of our organization to facilitate research and development on emerging products and incorporate user-feedback into our online developer community, Adobe Labs.™

Named Adobe Labs Ideas™, the site utilizes multiple interfaces to provide ideation capabilities for specific Adobe products, including Adobe AIR,™Adobe Flash Builder,Adobe Flash Catalyst,™Adobe Flash Professional,™ Adobe Flex,™ Adobe LiveCycle ES™ and WorkflowLab.™

The ability to collect and prioritize feature suggestions and feedback has the potential to dramatically improve workflow and increase the productivity of product managers, while at the same time providing real-time customer and developer feedback, in-depth customer insights for improved marketing and further refining features through community collaboration among peers.

For developers and users of Adobe products, Adobe Labs Ideas is an incredible opportunity to influence the development of your favorite applications. Popular suggestions collected so far include requests to streamline user interfaces to make programming more intuitive, improved integration of product lines and tips for improved hardware utilization.

According to Adobe Labs manager Daniel Taborga, the company has long been interested in engaging the user community for idea generation and after a successful pilot of BrightIdea’s technology, they decided to integrate it into the official launch of Adobe Labs Ideas. Now all product managers at Adobe now have the potential to utilize the platform to drive innovation in their products.

In the one month since the program was launched, Adobe Labs Ideas has already seen over 20,000 unique visitors, 1,200 registered users and generated upwards of 450 feature and usability recommendations on participating product lines.

Connect Pro Mobile available on the iPhone and iPod touch

Today, Adobe announces the availability of Connect Pro Mobile, an application for its enterprise Web conferencing solution Adobe Acrobat Connect Pro. Connect Pro Mobile was built using Flash Professional CS5 beta and published as a native iPhone application — the very first Adobe-authored application that uses the Packager for iPhone technology. With this release, Connect Pro Mobile offers users mobile access via an iPhone or iPod touch to rich communications including collaborative meetings, training sessions and Web seminars.

With Connect Pro Mobile, participants can watch and listen to live presentations including real-time meeting webcam video and screen sharing demonstrations. Mobile users can see who is in the meeting at any given time, and collaborate with others using live text chat. VoIP meeting audio will broadcast straight to iPhone or iPod touch devices over a WiFi or 3G connection. Meeting hosts also have the ability to give participants the option to join a telephone conference call , and even opt to have the conference dial out to the mobile user, eliminating the need to enter complex dialing codes. The application enables users to participate in Connect Pro conferences regardless of whether the solution has been deployed as an Adobe hosted service, as an on-premise customer implementation or as a managed service.
