Upcoming Changes to Photoshop and Lightroom OS Support for Windows and macOS

As we prepare for our next major releases of Photoshop, Lightroom Classic CC, Bridge, and Camera Raw, we wanted to give you a heads up on upcoming changes to our System Requirements.

To take advantage of the latest operating system features and technologies, the next major releases of Photoshop, Lightroom Classic CC, Bridge, and Camera Raw will not support Windows 8.1, Windows 10 v1511 and v1607, and macOS 10.11 (El Capitan).

Note: Windows 7 SP1 64-bit will continue to be supported, the exception being Lightroom CC which currently requires Windows 10 Version 1511 or later.

If you’re running Windows 8.1, Windows 10 v1511 and v1607 or macOS 10.11 (El Capitan), you can continue to run and install current and previous versions of Photoshop, Lightroom Classic CC, Bridge, and Camera Raw.

Our team hopes that by providing this information early that it will allow you to make migration plans now so you can take full advantage of future Photoshop & Lightroom innovations as soon as they are available.

The Creative Cloud Desktop, which manages application installation and activation, will continue to be supported on Windows 7 or later and macOS X v10.9 or later.

The Details Behind High-Density Pixels on HiDPI Displays

For many years, all computer monitors had about the same pixel density. This meant that 72 pixels always represented about an inch of physical display, and the UI of all applications (including Photoshop) were designed with that in mind. High-density (HiDPI) displays started to become popular in 2012, and brought with them a new challenge: if a monitor is twice as dense (a scale factor of 200%, or 144 pixels per inch) then the UI of Photoshop will become twice as small. If it is even more dense, the problem only gets worse and the UI smaller. Today, it is difficult to find a laptop that isn’t HiDPI. On the desktop, we commonly see very high resolutions at 4k, 5k, and 8k. To solve this problem on macOS, we took advantage of Apple’s pixel doubling technology and were able to support a 200% scale factor on Retina displays back in 2012. Windows, however, has a much broader set of hardware options and pixel densities, and required a more complex (and more difficult) solution.

Today we are shipping support for Windows high density monitors in Photoshop 19.1. I hope it improves your experience with Photoshop on HiDPI monitors as much as it has mine.

Photoshop & Lightroom compatibility with macOS 10.12 Sierra

Adobe has tested Photoshop CC 2017 and Lightroom CC 2015.7/6.7 running on macOS 10.12 (Sierra).

For details on known issues and workarounds, see:

Adobe strongly recommends that customers update Photoshop 2017 and Lightroom to 2015.7/6.7 prior to updating to macOS 10.12 (Sierra).

Older versions of Photoshop and Lightroom were not designed, nor extensively tested to run on macOS Sierra. We strongly recommend that customers do their own testing on a non-production partition to ensure that new operating systems work with their current hardware and drivers (printing, etc). You may wish to remain on an older version of the OS that is compatible with prior versions of our software.

If you do encounter issues that are not already documented, feel free to report them on our feedback site.

Photoshop 2015.5 Update (6/20/2016)

6/20/2016 – Today we released Photoshop CC 2015.5 update.

I’ve assembled some Q & A around updating to the 2015.5 release of Photoshop CC below. If you don’t see your question answered below, let me know in the comments section and I will try and answer.

Table of contents:

Important information about plug-ins & installation, please read:

VERY IMPORTANT – Photoshop CC 2015.5 is a full version update. As such, you will need to install your 3rd party plug-ins for them to work with CC 2015.5.

If you want to keep CC 2015.1.2 installed until you’ve had time to update/install your 3rd party plug-ins for 2015.5, be sure to click on “Advanced Options” and uncheck “Remove old versions” when installing the update:

AdvancedView

  • Note: When you uninstall prior versions, it does not uninstall 3rd party plug-ins installed for prior versions.
  • Note: Depending on what you choose you can always reinstall a prior version or uninstall prior versions at a later time if necessary.

New Features

For comprehensive information on the new features, see the Photoshop CC 2015.5 post by Pam Clark on the Photoshop team blog.

Do I have to reinstall my 3rd party plug-ins & extension panels after I update to Photoshop CC 2015.5?

Because Photoshop CC 2015.5 is a major version update it will install completely separately from the current version of Photoshop CC (version2015.1.2)  and have a separate plug-ins folder.

The good news is we’ve been working with 3rd party plug-in developers to use a shared Creative Cloud location for plug-ins. This will allow their plug-ins to load in future versions of Photoshop CC (e.g. CC 2016/2017) without having to re-install.

To install 3rd party plug-ins for Photoshop CC 2015.5:

DO:

DO NOT:

    • Do not manually drag plug-ins from a previous version of Photoshop’s plug-ins folder to a newer version of Photoshop’s ‘Plug-Ins’ folder

If you encounter unexplained problems or crashes in Photoshop, use the following documents to determine if plug-ins are the problem:

If you have extension panels installed from Adobe Add-Ons, compatible panels will automatically be installed on your system (as long as sync is enabled in the Creative Cloud desktop app).

If you have extension panels installed directly from a developers website, those panels will need to be reinstalled via the installer from the author.

  • Note: When you uninstall prior versions, it does not uninstall 3rd party plug-ins installed for prior versions.

Are my presets and preferences migrated automatically?

Yes, your presets and preferences will automatically be migrated from your prior version that’s installed on your local system.

If you are installing Photoshop CC on a separate, new system, you should export your presets from your existing system and then import them on the new system. See migrate presets or manually export and import presets.

How do I install/reinstall a prior version of Photoshop from Creative Cloud?
