48 Hour Film Project – Contestant Kush Amerasinghe Q&A: PART II

In this follow up to Part 1 of our Q&A with Kush Amerasinghe and his film for the 48 Hour Film Project, we’re delving a bit further into Kush’s creative background and inspiration for The Bandit:

Creative Layer: What was your inspiration for the film?

Kush Amerasinghe: To give you a better idea, this competition is not only about making a short movie in just two days, but also being able to adapt to anything.  So, you can’t really go into it with a certain story or even a kind of movie in mind.  The genre is randomly given to each team – there’s a specific character, specific line of dialog, as well as a specific prop all teams need to include in the movie.  My team got “Western,” which is probably one of the genres I was least prepared for and the hardest to do in the traditional sense in the middle of the city.

The Power of Curiosity

What is it about tinkering, experimenting – and even making mistakes – that allows us to unleash our creative potential? Sometimes it seems that our greatest achievements were never quite planned, and came about as a result of pursuing our curiosity.

The reason curiosity is important in creative professions is that it allows us to explore unknown ideas. It allows us to find things that we never knew existed, and that is really what creating – or being creative – is all about.

So next time you think an idea is too farfetched to entertain, let it sit for a while. Play with it before dismissing it all too soon. You never know what you’ll find. read more…

Creative Inspiration in Album Cover Art

Whether working in graphic design, web design and development or video production, all creatives are united by a common theme – they are constantly working to push boundaries. However, creative expression is not solely limited to these professions. Music is another creative medium where artists seek to push boundaries and find new creative avenues. That said, the relationship between music and creative expression cannot be overstated.

One of the most glaring (and inspiring) examples of the overlap between music and design is album artwork. Album art serves a number of functions. It can provide an aesthetic preview of what a listener might expect from the album inside. It can communicate certain messages that the artist may be trying to express. And most of all, it can be visually stunning and thought-provoking.
