Where Technology Meets Imagination

The Creativity of Children

What happens when you give children stickers and allow them to place the stickers anywhere in an all-white room? That’s the question Yayoi Kusama set out to answer in her vibrant art installation for the Gallery of Modern Art in Brisbane, titled The Obliteration Room.

What we love most about this exhibit is that it speaks to the unbridled creativity of children. In childhood, we often know no boundaries and thus our creative potential is boundless. This exhibit left us wondering a number of things.

  • Do you think creative professionals might benefit from the occasional return to the creative innocence of childhood?
  • What types of inspiration can we draw from the creative minds of children?

What i’d like to know is how they got them on the roof?

By jumping or lifting children up. We did it with our kids. The room is not full yet.

How many children or grown up kids did it take to fill the whole room?

love this…. I wish I had an all white room to do this to but I would let everyone go with markers as well…love the close ups with some of the sticker designs!

Put me in a white room and I’ll be very scared of ruining it, as I’m conditioned to keep this place clean. But it will be nice to see what I can do with colorful stickers in a space like that. My approach will probably be more methodical than a 7 yr old ;) but still worth a try.

Ummm….. they’ve pretty much just filled up every possible spot with multi-colored stickers.

What a wonderful post. As a middle school literacy teacher, I can attest to “the unbridled creativity of children.” One of my ambitions is to re-unite teens with the creative child tucked inside, which years of artless education have pushed away. When this mystery occurs, they return to class with comments such as, “Mrs. Luna, it’s hard to concentrate in math class when ideas for stories keep popping into my mind.”

What a joy to have them share artistic sketches, innovative book ideas, and videos of them dancing. Then we can take their art forms and use Adobe Elements to create a product they can share with the world. Children and teens have so much to teach us about the spontaneous workings of creativity.
