Coulrophobia: fear of clowns

We would like to address the recent confusion over an image of a jester, which appears in our current advertising campaign for Adobe Creative Suite 3. We know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and do not expect everyone to appreciate the image. It is one of many images that were created for the latest campaign.

However, we were surprised to learn that there is such a large group of adults suffering from the dreaded coulrophobia. In fact, we want to apologize to any customers or press who may have had nightmares of the jester “creeping across your bed at midnight.” It was never the intention of Adobe or its creative counterparts to scare the bejesus out of you. But, hey, our customers do amazing work in many fields and Adobe software been used to create realistic looking scenes in movies (may be scary), layout pages for major newspapers and magazines on tight deadlines (often scary), and alter the images of celebrities to make them look flawless (definitely scary).

We aren’t here to develop nightmares, just great tools. And, we believe in showcasing our customers’ creative work when we can. If we didn’t, now that would be scary.

(Oh yeah, and just for the record, it isn’t a mascot.)

  1. I found out about the “fear of clowns” when I was working on some demonstration files for the Illustrator CS release. I had come up with a fictional band called “The Pie Throwers” and had found an image of a clown, holding a pie, with that glint in his eye that he was about to let the pie fly…Someone on the Illustrator team told me he was frightened by the image and others confirmed it as well…One person’s funny is another person’s scary!
