Congratulations to the winners of the seventh annual Adobe Design Achievement Awards! On August 2 in a ceremony at San Francisco’s de Young Museum, Adobe honored the most talented and promising student graphic designers, photographers, illustrators, animators, digital filmmakers, and computer artists from the world’s top institutions. Using the latest Adobe products, more than 2,500 students from 30 countries competed in the annual program.

Well, we call it Adobe Premiere Express. It has been a mystery to most, because it’s working behind the scenes powering fun experiences like video remixing with music video footage on MTV.com.
Premiere Express is a free, web-based video remix and editing technology that is easy and fun to use. The drag-and-drop interface means you don’t have to be a pro to create something slick. Express users can easily create and edit mash-up style Web videos by combining video clips, music, photos, effects, transitions and titles.
Premiere Express can be found on YouTube, MTV.com and Photobucket. On MTV.com users are able to remix hot artist’s new music videos; YouTube and Photobucket allow users to upload their own videos to remix. To try out the new Premiere Express technology check out these sites:
Designers and creative pros can unleash their imagination and debut their mash-up skills by participating in the Adobe Systems Incorporated “Take Creative License” contest. Entrants combine, alter or mash-up images available on the Adobe Stock Photos library to create a winning advertisement for the Adobe Stock Photos Service. Entries are judged on outstanding use of mash-up skills. The winning entrant will have their masterpiece published in the September issue of Graphic Design: USA Magazine along with an editorial feature highlighting the designer’s creative process. Entries may be submitted through July 16, 2007.

It’s showtime again! Cut & Paste has announced their Call for Entries for this year’s Digital Design Tournament, the live onstage event that pit top emerging digital artists against one another in live battles.
Over the course of several fast-paced, single-elimination rounds, eight designers get whittled down to one. Each contestant will compete with the latest tools including an Apple® MacPro Workstation, Adobe® Creative Suite 3, and a Wacom® Cintiq interactive pen display. A designated theme will guide competitors to create a digital design in each round, as their work is projected in real-time before a live audience. An esteemed judging panel will decide the Jury Prize, while a global webcast will allow onsite and offsite viewers to vote for an Audience Prize online or by SMS.
Cities hosting this year’s events include: Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Portland, San Francisco, Berlin, London, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and Sydney. Designers who aren’t shy about showcasing their talent and creative process in front of a live audience of peers, recruiters and industry leaders should visit the Cut & Paste website for entry and contest details, at www.cutandpaste.com.

Tonight, Adobe will be honored at the 11th annual Webby Awards in New York City.
Adobe was selected for four People’s Voice awards and one Webby award in five categories (see list below). Two awards given to Adobe are being accepted by members of the Adobe.com team. The other three awards will be picked up by Goodby, Silverstein & Partners for the Adobe Creative Suite 2.3 Creative Minds site.
As a title sponsor of the Webby Awards, Adobe also sponsored the In-Motion video creation contest and an Adobe Vlog-It station at last night’s Video Awards After Party. We hope to feature some of the Webby Award winners work on Adobe.com very soon.

Adobe has announced today that InDesign CS3 Server is now available for system integrators, third-party developers and in-house development teams to download. Adobe InDesign Server CS3 is the publishing engine server version of the award-winning InDesign CS3 that can be integrated into customized automated publishing solutions.
If you need to automate professional design, and create things like (but not limited to!) brochures, collateral and catalogs, ads or personalized marketing materials (VDP) a solution powered by InDesign Server is likely to be the answer.

Adobe has released an update to Adobe Bridge CS3. Available in all six editions of Adobe Creative Suite® 3 software and all professional Adobe creative applications, Bridge provides centralized access to project files, applications, and settings, as well as XMP metadata tagging and searching capabilities.
The update is available through Bridge via the Help menu > Updates and also through Adobe.com. The update includes the following enhancements:
Organize your keywords into groups and subgroups as deep a hierarchy as you want by using the multilevel support in the keywords panel. Convenient keyboard shortcuts for applying single keywords or parent keywords are now available. Search Advanced options allow for storing hierarchy into the file metadata. In addition, easily import and export keywords using tab delimited file formats.
Improved Cache Management
Control the size of the Bridge cache of thumbnail and metadata information to better improve responsiveness. The cache can also be compacted to improve performance.
Other additions include new preference control over video and audio file previews, improved scrolling and renaming and usability improvements to customized workspaces.
The Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum (the design arm of the Smithsonian) has selected Adobe as this year’s winner of its Corporate Achievement award which recognizes a corporation that uses design as a strategic tool of its mission and helps to advance the relationship between design and quality of life.
Cooper-Hewitt is one of the most prestigious design award competitions in the world and being selected is quite an honor. Winners for 2006 and 2005, respectively, were Nike and Patagonia. The presentation to award winners will take place in New York on October 18 during National Design Week.

The National Design Awards were conceived in 1997 by the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum to honor the best in American design. First launched at the White House in 2000 as an official project of the White House Millennium Council, the annual Awards program celebrates design in various disciplines as a vital humanistic tool in shaping the world, and seeks to increase national awareness of design by educating the public and promoting excellence, innovation, and lasting achievement. The Awards are truly national in scope—nominations for the 2007 Awards were solicited from a committee of more than 800 leading designers, educators, journalists, cultural figures, and corporate leaders from every state in the nation. Reflecting the ever-growing scope of design, the Awards program has expanded this year to include three new categories—landscape design, interior design, and design mind—for a total of 10 awards.
Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL), a leading UK newspaper management company, has adopted Adobe® InDesign® CS2 and InCopy® CS2 as its standard publishing solution. The implementation, to be carried out through Adobe partner Atex, http://www.atex.com/ will provide ANL with cutting-edge tools to fine tune page layout workflow, making it easier, faster, and more fluid for designers to be creative and achieve higher productivity.
Adobe InDesign and InCopy, as part of Atex’s database managed editorial content solution, will initially work in conjunction with Lotus Notes text editor, already in use with several ANL titles and will be used to produce and manage ANL’s many publications including big names like the Daily Mail, The Mail on Sunday, Evening Standard, Metro, LondonLite, as well as a number of online publications.
The switch from “ahem- another vendor” to a new cross-media solution will help ANL improve both content and delivery, streamlining design and editorial processes and improve the quality of all materials. Additionally, with the support for XML in InDesign, ANL will save time and money that was once spent developing the custom software needed for cross media publishing.
