Looking for tutorial links, applications, techniques,.. in building sharp contemporary desktop icons like one finds used in current Mac OS 10.

I've tried using Illustrator and Photoshop, but the vector-to-raster gets blurry and the 32x32 icons loose quality. The 48x48 barely hang in there.

Thanks for any input.
