Developer Spotlight: Made in Me

When James Huggins and Mike Outlaw struggled to find high quality content to play with for their young children, they started a new multimedia publishing company, Made in Me. First up in their offerings, The Land of Me – an interactive learning adventure for PCs, Macs and iPads. Focused on being a media-rich digital learning experience, Land of Me retains the old school elegance of children’s books while also offering engaging storytelling.

The creative founders – in collaboration with a childhood development team and digital creative agency, Less Rain – leveraged Adobe Gaming Technologies and Creative Suite applications, such as Photoshop and After Effects, in the making of their app. To date, the Made in Me has been able to achieve strong sales that have doubled month to month and is able to track 10% conversion of trials to sales – and the team isn’t stopping there! Developer Spotlight: A Follow Up with Jordan Casey of Casey Games

We had the chance to reconnect with young developer Jordan Casey, who recently released a new gaming app – Greenboy Touch. In our Developer Spotlight back in July, Jordan mentioned that he was going to slow down, but that obviously wasn’t the case! Read up on our latest interview with Jordan to find out more about his inspiration and the making of his latest Android and iOS game submitted to our Flash Rocks gallery.

What was your inspiration behind your new app, Greenboy Touch?

Greenboy Touch was based off a Flash game I developed about 2 years ago. I’m always trying new genres and I love different game concepts. While most of my games are just one specific style of gameplay, Greenboy Touch is made up of tons of different concepts. It is sort of a puzzle game.

We’d love to share more about the making of the app with our readers. What Creative Suite products did you use and did you have any favorite features?

I used Photoshop and Illustrator for graphics – they’re great tools! To develop the game I used Adobe AIR for iOS and for Android. I programmed in ActionScript 3.0, Flash and AIR, which are amazing. With the click of a button, I could switch a Flash game to a desktop app for Mac or PC back to an Android app to an iOS App. The program is great because it’s really visual and really powerful. ActionScript is an amazing language, and though so powerful, quite easy to pick up.

What was your experience like using Flash to create for Android and iOS? Are there any tips you would share with other developers?

The process was great. Like I said, with the click of a button I could go from iOS to Android. It’s just great. It’s the same as making a Flash game – the exact same, and with just a click, you get a native app! Just like that! It’s magic!

You’re juggling school and development. We want to know – what’s your secret? How are you doing it all?

Well, it is tough juggling between school, development, and lots of speaking events. To make up for time I missed while I’m away speaking, I take a 2-hour study course after school to catch up or study for exams. That way, I have my homework done and I can develop for about an hour or so.

Idle Worship Brings Art and Engineering to Social Gaming

After a recent sabbatical, I returned to find that Idle Worship, the social “god” game which was recently profiled here in a Q&A with Jeffery Hyman, CEO of Idle Games, has changed expectations for social gameplay, enjoying success and attracting more than 400,000 players with a whimsical combination of blessings and curses. In an interesting twist, Idle Worship’s success has also prompted some discussion about people’s fundamental inclination to do good or not :).

We’re highlighting Idle Games in an Adobe customer success story that describes in depth how Idle Worship was built from the ground up with Adobe Gaming technologies. Creative Suite Master Collection provided the tools for the game creators to create the characters, while Flash allowed the team to infuse the impressive artwork with engaging animations. The game challenges players to rule their island however they see fit, while deep integration with social media allows players to gather fans, followers and friends as they play.

Tanki 2 and Stage 3D Streamroll Over the Competition

Video games provide you with the chance to be a fighter pilot, sharp shooter or warrior. With Tanki Online, the first, online multiplayer 3D action desktop game using Flash Player, you can be a pro on the battlefield and work with your team to destroy enemy tanks, help your team and build up your ammunition arsenal. AlternativaPlatform, a Russian based company that creates multiplayer browser games, created Tanki 2, the follow up to the popular Tanki Online,  with Flash Player 11, Adobe Creative Suite 5 Master Collection components and Adobe Flash Builder, to create the 3D geometry and animation for the game. AternativaPlatform used Stage 3D to deliver Tanki Online as a cutting edge 3D experience for gamers. Stage 3D allowed AlternativaPlatform to create accelerated graphics and animation development, and create more realistic and smooth gameplay for Tanki Online.

Live Talkback and the Flash Platform Bring a Live Studio Audience to You

As loud as we may shout at the TV watching sports or offer our own advice during a talk show, the people on the tube never hear our insights—until now. U.K. based interactive content developer, Live Talkback, used the Adobe Flash Platform  and Adobe Creative Suite  to engage U.K. audiences during broadcasts with live polling, allowing them to use their PCs and mobile devices to vote during live broadcasts.  Live Talkback displays those voting results in real-time, keeping viewers on top of the buzz before, during and after these live events. Live Talkback applications include a “Clapometer,” which uses PC and mobile phone microphones to measure audience noise during a show.

An Adobe MAX 2010 award finalist, Live Talkback uses Adobe Flash Builder, Adobe Flash Player and the Flex framework because the technologies provide a flexible development environment and an easy integration process, allowing Live Talkback to create the polling tools in a fraction of the time and cost. Popular U.K. morning show, “This Morning,” and top soccer club, Liverpool FC, have used Live Talkback to engage with its audiences. “This Morning” received more than 57,000 live votes in a recent live broadcast segment. The company is looking forward to emerging in other markets, namely in the U.S.

Build Mobile Apps for Android Devices, BlackBerry PlayBook, iPhone and iPad Today!

Since our April news announcing Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 and Flex 4.5, we began with support for building mobile apps across multi-device platforms, first with Android. Today we’re happy to announce updates to Flash Builder and the Flex framework that now offer support for iPhone, iPad and BlackBerry PlayBook. As a result, developers can quickly build and distribute apps through the Android Market, BlackBerry App World and Apple App Store using one tool chain, programming language and code base—a first for developers!

Our own Flash Platform evangelist Serge Jespers shows us what “one tool, one framework, one codebase” means, and demonstrates an app developed for different devices using Flash Builder and Flex:

Developers from different industries such as government, entertainment and gaming have been using Flash Builder 4.5 and Flex 4.5 to help them reduce development time and the cost of delivery to build some pretty amazing apps across the major platforms:

- Politifact.com: A project of the St. Petersburg Times and a 2009 Pulitzer Prize winner, the PolitiFact.com team extended its website content into a mobile app available across leading app stores. The PolitiFact.com app helps readers find truth in politics by investigating statements by members of Congress, the President, lobbyists and other Washington D.C. personalities. 

- Netflix Queue Manager: Using Adobe AIR 2.5, Flash Builder 4.5.1 and the Flex framework, RIA design and development group UnitedMindset created the Netflix Queue Manager, which allows users to connect with and manage their Netflix queue across devices and features intuitive search capabilities. With success in the Android Market—over 340,000 downloads since October 2010—the app is coming soon to BlackBerry AppWorld and the Apple App Store.

- Mr. Mixit and Pyramix: Web design and development agency HD Interactive first released Pyramix, a word game combining the strategy of Cryptoquote and the simplicity of Boggle, and Mr. Mixit, a spin-based matching game where you mix record labels against the clock, to Apple’s App Store. The new updates allowed HD Interactive to use the same code to deliver the apps to Android Market and BlackBerry AppWorld in record time. 

- Muni Tracker: Are you from the San Francisco Bay Area or maybe planning to visit? This app helps you track locations, arrival times and bookmark your favorite stops and lines for Muni (San Francisco Municipal Railway), San Francisco’s public transit system. The developer was able to quickly and easily port this original Android app to iOS.

- Conqu is an easy to use yet powerful task management tool designed to help conquer an e-mail inbox and get things done. Using Flash Builder 4.5, the developer, AsFusion, was able deploy the app on multiple platforms with minimal effort. They were also able to reduce the time to develop the app since there was no need to debug different code for each individual platform.

Frima Studio and the Adobe Flash Platform Bring Zombies to Life

Canadian-based game development firm Frima Studio boasts a client list that includes Electronic Arts, Warner Brother and Nickelodeon and a reputation for high-quality 3D games such as Zombie Tycoon, one of the original six games available in the Sony PlayStation Portable (PSP) Mini. Looking to expand beyond the console, Frima Studio uses the Adobe Flash Platform to bring those same, engaging 3D experiences to the widest number of devices.

Zombie Tycoon is a single-player game in which zombie squads take over the world. The game is full of puzzle-filled cities, 360 degree animations, and skybox effects, which have delighted PSP Mini gamers for years. But to bring that same 3D experience to web gamers, Frima tapped Adobe Flash Player and Stage 3D APIs, a new method of 2D and 3D rendering in Flash Player.

The Frima team recognized a number of other advantages in the Flash Platform for its gamers.  Since Flash Player is everywhere—98 percent of the world’s Internet-connected computers—concerns about downloading a separate player to play these games are dispelled.

Using the Flex framework to build the tools to create the 3D apps, Adobe Flash Professional and Adobe Flash Builder to build the game UI menus and Adobe Photoshop CS5 to texturize images, developers reap the rewards too. Flash Player’s reach across screens worldwide offers developers greater monetization opportunities, particularly for Facebook games and free-to-play games. The new set of Stage 3D APIs, allows Frima developers, most of whom are ActionScript developers more versed in 2D game building, to easily create rich effects, texture and atmosphere in its games without sacrificing performance.

If you’re looking for examples of full web browsing with Adobe Flash Player on your mobile device, chances are you’ve visited m.flash.com. Since launching a year ago, this site has been a great resource for leading device manufacturers like Motorola and RIM to promote some of the best rich content created with Adobe Flash technology for their customers to enjoy anywhere, demonstrating the benefits of Flash Player. Today, we’re excited to expand the breadth of expressive apps and web browsing created with Adobe tools for Android, BlackBerry Tablet OS and Apple iOS platforms with the Adobe & Mobile Showcase.

Built with Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 products like Dreamweaver CS5.5 using HTML5, visitors to the Adobe & Mobile Showcase can view content available for their mobile platform, with a consistent Adobe-branded experience throughout. Android and BlackBerry PlayBook users will notice a revamped showcase design. And now, Apple iOS device users can view some of the selected AIR apps from FX Networks and USA Network built with Creative Suite 5.5, also available on the iTunes App Store.

Shantanu Joins RIM CEO Mike Lazaridis on Stage at BlackBerry World

During RIM’s BlackBerry World developer conference, Adobe CEO Shantanu Narayen and Danny Winokur, Adobe’s VP of Flash Runtimes, discussed how our developer community has embraced the opportunity to create innovative apps for the PlayBook. Shantanu announced that a large majority of the 3,000 apps in App World today are AIR apps, including the new Facebook app, which was built using Creative Suite tools like Flash Builder.

Now Available—One Mobile Development Platform with Flash Builder 4.5 and Flex 4.5

It’s here—Adobe Flash Builder 4.5 and Flex 4.5, along with Adobe Creative Suite 5.5, are shipping and ready for you to create expressive applications across leading device platforms!

We’ve really focused on mobile development for this release, offering developers one tool, one development framework and one codebase to build mobile applications on Android, BlackBerry Tablet OS and iOS. Flash Builder 4.5 also helps developers make these applications ready to deploy for an app store/market. You can immediately develop applications for Android, and support for BlackBerry Tablet OS and iOS will be available through free Flex and Flash Builder updates in June.

For you PHP developers out there creating RIAs across mobile, web and the desktop, Flash Builder 4.5 for PHP software is also now available from Adobe and Zend Technologies. The software features an integrated development environment (IDE) to create Flex and PHP applications, where developers can deliver Android, BlackBerry Tablet OS and iOS applications while sharing code from web apps. This helps reduce time and cost for development and maintenance.

But “seeing is believing!” If you happen to be at BlackBerry World this week, be sure to stop by Adobe’s booth to see some cool demos for Flash Builder 4.5-created applications.
