Adobe Contribute CS3 – Whats new !!

     

        If you are still using the good old Macromedia Contribute 1.x / 2.x then its right-time for you to upgrade. I am not advertising though!!…:) Lots of features got added since then… In this post i will describe whats new with the latest Adobe Contribute CS3 release as compared to recent Macromedia Contribute 4..

  • The New Adobe Branding… Its No more Macromedia Contribute…. Its now skinned with new start page, new splash screen, new logo… and its your Adobe Contribute CS3
  • Improved CSS Rendering… It now has much better and enhanced CSS rendering engine which gives you true WYSIWYG editing experience
    Insert HTML Snippets… You can now insert HTML snippets in the edit mode at the cursor location. This is available for all blog entries in contribute edit mode. However for websites this is governed by an administrative setting for the given user role in Administrators -> Edit Role Settings dialog. You can now get HTML Snippets from YouTube.com and insert them directly using Insert->HTML Snippet in your blogs..
  • Insert Image From the Internet… You like an image on the internet and you want to insert it in your website or blog entry? its made more simple now… Choose Insert->Image->From the Internet, it opens a mini-browser for you. Enter the URL for the image on the internet and press OK… That inserts the image for you in your web page or blog entry… Note: This does not download the image from the internet and re-upload to your site…. it adds a reference to the original image… You want to insert computer image? browse to google.com click on images link and search for the images with computer keyword… browse for your favourite image and insert it…
  • Insert Flash From the Internet.. World is now changing and most of it is now Animation in SWF format… Lots of Flash content is available on the internet… If you want to insert it into your Web Page or Blog Entry.. its simple now… Insert->Flash->From the internet, it opens a mini-browser… browse to the URL containing SWF File (ex: http://www.xxx.com/myswf.swf) and press OK… resize the SWF and adjust it and publish it.. its simple now…
  • Insert Video From the Internet… You uploaded your MPEG, AVI, MOV etc. movie formats on to your web space (like www.5gbfree.com) and want to insert it in your blog entry or Web Page?? Insert->Video->From the Internet, browse to your video file and press OK.. thats embedded video for you on your favourite blog or web page…
  • Insert PDF DocumentFrom My Computer, From My Website, From the Internet… Earlier version of contribute only supported linking of a PDF Document but with this release you can choose to EMBED the PDF Document in your web page or blog entry…. Embedding PDF document reduces one click from the traditional linking to a document and gives you a better view to read the document in the web page without actually clicking and downloading… this option however gives you an option to either link to PDF document or Embed it in your web page or blog entry.
  • Office 2007 Integration…. Earlier it used to support Office 2003 and Office xp by keeping a Contribute Toolbar plugin in MS Word, MS Excel, MS Outlook email reader… Open in Contribute, Open selection in Contribute, Publish to Web, Publish Selection to Website, Post selection to your blog… Now it supports Office 2007 (.xlsx, .docx formats) are also supported.
  • Choosing Template before you Open in Contribute or Publish … Office plugin allows you to open the selection from a Office document into contribute and then make a modification and publish it as a webpage in your website… Or you make a selection, publish instantly to your website… with this release you can choose the template and the Editable region into which your content should go in… look at the preview and then publish it as a webpage.. this doesnt say now that – I am NO MORE a glorified FTP client …!!
  • Converting an Office Document to PDF and inserting in your web page… When using Contribute plugin from your office document, either you do Open document (selection) in contribute, you may choose to convert the document into PDF and embed it or link it. You may also do Publish document (selection) from your office document, you may choose to publish it as PDF before publishing the document. PS: you need to have Acrobat Elements 8 or Acrobat Professional for this…
  • Support for FireFox 2 and IE 7….Contribute adds a plugin in these browsers for quickly doing "Edit the browser url in contribute" or "Post a selection that you like on the page you are browsing in the browser into your blog entry".. Now it supports the newer versions of browser releases…
  • Enhanced and Easy Blog entries Management…. It was not so easy to locate and edit your blog entries in earlier Contribute 4.. with this release you will see an "Entries" drop down once you browse to your blog home page… Select the Blog entry and you will see "Edit Entry", "Delete Entry" buttons… its made very easy now…
  • Preview in Browser for blogs…. Even though contribute blog editor gives you a clean WYSIWYG editing experience while creating your blog entry by downloading the Blog template for you before even you publish, some wanted to preview their content before they publish… this mechanism is now in-built in this release…
  • Support for IPv6… Contribute now supports connecting to your websites or blogs that are residing on a server with IPv6 configured…
    New Blogger support… Blogger has enhanced its protocol and lot of other blog clients including Contribute 4 cannot now connect to blogger blog accounts.. this has been fixed in this release which now supports new blogger accounts…
  • Date Time Control on Blog entries… You can now publish your blog entries on a specific time (limitations are blog servers how they handle this via protocol)… WordPress supports scheduling via contribute.. other blogs accept the date time and show it on your blog entry but may not actually schedule it…
  • Support for Multiple Categories and Multiple Trackbacks… Contribute now allows you to select multiple categories and multiple trackbacks for your blog entries.
  • RSD Support for Blogs… RSD is a technology used to discover the access point URL for your blogs by entering your website URL…. stands for Really simple discoverability… Assuming you have a blog server setup on your website, just enter the website URL and it will pick up the access point url by default for the blog server from an xml file named rsd.xml… Connecting to blogs made easier now with this add-on… see here for more..
  • Roller blog Support… if you have your own website where you have installed roller blog server then you can start using contribute to edit / post / delete your blog entries… You will have to choose Other blog servers and enter the Access point URL as http://:port/roller/xmlrpc, username and password and start blogging..
  • Universal Binary for Mac users … its better little late than never… Finally the UB is out and its pretty faster.. runs natively on your Mac-Intel….
    Support for Windows Vista…. Contribute CS3 is fully supported for Windows Vista now…
  • New Enhanced Adobe Help Integration …. Integrated with Adobe Help viewer to show a better help with in the product…
  • Adobe Bridge Integration… You can now work with Adobe Bridge which is a kind of file browser that bridges all the Adobe CS applications.. you can now browse to an image in bridge edit it in photoshop.. then Place the same in contribute web page where your cursor is located…it also supports office publishing and open in Contribute features… this integration seamlessly lets you work with other CS3 products..
  • Better look of the installer… Its no more the olden Install Sheild … its looks better now… Please note that with this release you can actually see an "Uninstaller" on MAC… Browse to /Applications/Utlities/Adobe Installers/ and you will see an alias "Adobe Contribute CS3"… double click it to uninstall or re-install.. this keeps your machine clean unlike the blunt way of "DELETE" which keeps some files on your mac
