Design Your Own Toys With Printies

Printies is a new craft toy from Techno Source that allows kids to be the toy designer. Using a very simple creative design tool powered by Adobe AIR, you can create your own stuffed character and print it to a pre-sewn, 100% cotton sheet. Once the design is printed, you fill your design with stuffing and you are done. For a video tutorial, check out the Printies website.

  1. Glad you guys enjoyed it! We’re happy to share more details. If it wasn’t for Adobe AIR we’d never have been able to make Printies a success!

Genius idea, my 8 year old daughter spends hours on design site, like hannah montana fashion designer stuff.

But I have to say I am a bit disappointed that I “have” to purchase the package to start designing, I understand you guys wouldn’t want to give it away, but…

If my daughter spent hours designing her favorite characters and or even got my son (4yrs) involved, they would undoubtably bug me to print it out to make it,

and at first I probably would say “No” because thats what I do, but after they spend a bunch of time on it then I am sure I would eventually come around.

Plus if you let kids spend quality time designing stuff you could actually sell even more packages being they would want to create all the designs.

But by not having the design “free” to use I have to make the decision on the idea instead of the passion from my kids.

Hope this helps and please let me know if and when you push the designer free…

    Thanks and Regards

Wow, that’s really cool, probably the most unique idea I’ve seen in a while. I wish you guys lots of luck.

  4. Thank you! We appreciate the shout out here on the blog. To our knowledge this is the first children’s toy rocking retail with Adobe AIR.

It was a lot of fun designing the application framework and flow along with implementing it. Several awesome challenges combining things such as time-line management, programmatic boundaries, sandbox management with part of the app being on the desktop and part of it on the server, print API functions in a cross-OS/cross-Browser environment, and user interface with children as the chief user base. Lots of stories and lots of fun.

Thank you as well for the kind comments here on the post itself.

The toy is currently on sale in Target, Toys R’ Us, and Walgreens and we’re expecting a big user escalation come Christmas. Our growth rate is amazing. We just gained 500 more users in just the past 3 days.

As Jason mentioned we’re available for discussions on the project etc. Several key features of AIR made this possible.

Thank you again and Merry Christmas!

  8. @Melody – I have sent a request to the team at Printies to see if they can provide support for your issue. You should be able to download the Printies application by going here:

@Amy: I have reached out to the Printies team to relay your issue. It is unclear to me why this might be happening, but I suspect the developers of the application will have a theory as to why this might be happening.

I am having the same problem as Melody. I have Adobe Air downloaded (though I can’t seem to find it on my computer anywhere, but it says I have it downloaded when I try to download it again). I just can’t open the multiple files that go on to my computer when I try to download the application.
