Mobile Gaming Gets a Performance Boost: Adobe AIR 3.2 with 2D and 3D Hardware Acceleration Announced

Over the last year, we’ve seen a 7x increase in the availability of Adobe AIR apps in mobile marketplaces, including the Apple AppStore, with no signs of slowing down. With AIR, game developers and publishers can deliver their apps across 6 platforms on more than 500 million smartphones and tablets with stunning graphics and intricate gameplay. Creating amazingly detailed games like Machinarium, which claimed the spot as the #1 iPad app in 12 countries last year, is becoming easier than ever.

Just as Machinarium first debuted as a desktop game, publishers and developers today are looking to easily take their games and deliver them to app stores on a host of mobile devices across the globe. With the availability of AIR 3.2, we’re excited to help users push the envelope of mobile game development with new hardware accelerated 2D and 3D graphics rendering (Stage 3D) to enable significant performance gains in mobile gaming apps. Hardware accelerated 2D and 3D graphics will help ring in a new class of social and casual games running at 60 frames per second on mobile devices and tablets. Developers can download a release candidate of AIR 3.2 today and start packaging up apps for delivery to mobile marketplaces immediately, with general availability of AIR 3.2 and Flash Player 11.2 in March.

Hardware accelerated 2D and 3D support, released in Flash Player 11 last year, spurred a new class of features for existing games, including Rovio’s Angry Birds for Facebook, now available with special power up features and enhanced graphics. The global gaming community has shown great adoption of this new technology, boasting a host of titles from Renren, Gamegoo and Disney, and we anticipate that many existing PC games will be ported to mobile using AIR 3.2 in the coming months. Falanxia’s Spaced Away as well as Pamakids Tech’s Winter on Whale Island will be some of the first. Also, we recently learned that the top 9 Flash based games in China generate more than $70 million per month! Now that shows rapid adoption.

All of these innovative developments (with more to come soon!) demonstrate our focus on creating value for our gaming customers.     Flash developer really don’t have to envy other tech. Adobe has made some incredible advancement over the last year and I can honestly say that I am proud to be a flash dev.

    Flash 11 Rocks, but all developers of Stage 3D games ask for a feature: run on HTML pages without putting wMode=direct on it. That’s because when I distribute a game by Mochi, 99.9% of WebSites don’t put wMode=direct, so the game will not run.

    @Diana Helander – you are a PM for Gaming Solutions at Adobe so you shoud now about sound latency problem on Air for Android applications which is very important thing when you’re developing a game. Is this issue fixed with AIR 3.2?

    seeing a lot of these newer games requiring iPad 2 (and photoshop touch) – is this a result of the latest version of AIR? Will air 3.2 based games/apps run on iPad 1?

  10. I came to AS3 from Java background because of all the fun stuff and the visual effect that you can achieve. Its been hard for the past year for Flash developer to listen to the fuelled Html5 jumping on our neck because finally they can slide an image from left to right with some easing thanks to jQuery.
    I am glad that adobe is pushing hard by the incredible stage3D which will make us as Developer stand out!

    Hi

    Problem Alternativa3D with AIR 3.2 on iPad 2.
    I working on windows 7 creating this app by cs5.5 flash pro.
    I update air to 3.2 (http://www.flashdeveloper.co/post/20583114199/air32-in-flash-cs-55)
    I have Alternativa3D version: 8.27.0
    I publish this by Player: AIR for iOS – (in Flash Pro cs5.5)

    I download air 3.2 and works fine on PC with alternativa3D(8.27.0) with some demos that alternativa team gives.
    But if I want to publish to iOS (iPad or iPhone by flash pro cs.5.5) is NOT working.
    It’s not working on device – iPad 2.
    I put example of alternativa3D – simple box.
    I run application by clicking the icon on iPad 2.
    When application run I see only the grey background.

    In next option I put some layer in flash with text and vector symbol above action script to see if it’s work with this.
    I run App on iPad 2 and I see only my layer that I made.

    RenderMode is GPU. I test this on AUTO and CPU too. (xml is correct define)
    When I put Rendering to CPU mode I have error(Error #2044: Unhandled ErrorEvent:. text=Error #3702: Context3D not available). So I thing it’s correct to put Rendering to GPU mode.

    Like I said On PC everything is working fine – website, air.

    Please some help.
