Packager for iPhone update

We have posted an update to the Packager for iPhone that makes it easier for you to build AIR apps for iOS and submit them to the App Store.  Update 2.0.1.12640 addresses issues when submitting AIR applications for iOS to Apple’s App Store that resulted from changes to Apple’s application submissions tools.  You can download the latest standalone Packager for iPhone from Adobe Labs. or get the Flash Professional CS5 Update for iOS from the Flash Support Center.

Update: Valerio from the Flash Professional team has posted a nice video walkthrough for updating PFI in Flash Professional CS5 and publishing an example app for iOS.

Adobe AIR Apps Available on Android Market

At Mobile World Congress 2010 Adobe announced Adobe AIR would support mobile devices by the end of this year.  Adobe AIR, a key component of the Adobe Flash® Platform, enables developers to use a single development platform and reuse existing code to quickly build applications that run outside the browser, across multiple screens, devices and platforms. Because the source code and assets are reusable across the Flash Platform runtimes (AIR and Flash Player), it also gives developers a way to more rapidly target other mobile and desktop environments.

Today we reach another important milestone by posting the Adobe AIR runtime to the Android Market thus enabling our developers to distribute their applications to Android smartphone and tablets.  Some of these apps are already available as AIR applications running on the desktop and iOS.  We are also on track to deliver the next version of the AIR SDK  by the end of 2010.  Additional information regarding Adobe AIR for Android is available at Adobe Labs.

With the support of our Open Screen Project ™ partners, soon Adobe Flash Platform tools will allow for AIR apps to be compiled and delivered to Android, iOS, BlackBerry™ Tablet OS devices and more.    Come see us at Adobe MAX in Los Angeles on October 23-27 for first access to industry leading tools that enable the development of applications across multiple screens, devices and platforms.

Downloading Adobe AIR for your Android device.

You only need to download Adobe AIR once from the Android Market and it will work with any AIR based application on your device. If you download an AIR application to your Android device and AIR is not already installed, the application will take you directly to download the AIR runtime.  In the future, AIR will be preinstalled on many newer smartphones and tablets therefore eliminating the need for the initial download.

AIR for TV Sessions at MAX

Adobe MAX is right around the corner and we’re super excited to start showing off the latest and greatest that AIR has to offer. There’s going to be a ton of exciting sessions covering desktop, mobile devices, and now the newest screen, TVs.

We’ve got two sessions specifically aimed at getting our customers excited about and educated in what AIR for TV is going to offer them. We also have a lab that will give you a chance to learn how to actually develop AIR for TV applications. Plus, as usual, we’ll have a couple of surprises up our sleeve that you won’t want to miss!

Our two sessions will help you learn two things: first, the ecosystem around TVs, Blu-ray Players, and set top boxes; and, second how to actually use the new AIR for TV platform to build and optimize applications that run on those devices. Expect these to be info-packed, fun, and engaging sessions to learn about a whole new screen to take your apps and content.

Flash to AIR for Android in 10 minutes!

Over the last few days, developers in the Adobe AIR for Android private beta started creating AIR applications for the Android OS. Using existing code from Flash applications or their AIR applications created for the iPhone, developers were able to create applications in just a few short hours and for one developer in just 10 minutes! Here are a few quotes found on the blogs of our private beta developers:

For business reasons, Apple recently updated the terms of their iPhone developer program license which now restricts applications built with Adobe technology and other 3rd party technologies to be distributed in the Apple App Store. As a result of this business decision our customers will no longer be able to distribute their apps in the Apple App Store but not to worry since Adobe is committed to our developers and we will continue to support multi-screen and multi-platform content creation. This week Andy Rubin, Google VP of Engineering, made a guest post on the Adobe Featured blog stating Google’s commitment to bringing Flash and AIR to Android-based devices. With the continued support from OSP partners and the ubiquity and flexibility of the Adobe Flash Platform the possibilities are endless for our customers.

Happy Birthday Adobe® AIR®… 2 years and still growing

images.jpeg On February 25, 2008 Adobe gave birth to Adobe AIR. In two short years, we’ve seen the rapid growth and adoption of Adobe AIR with major brand names to small start-ups. AIR now powers a variety of applications used by enterprises and everyday consumers in applications for social networking, gaming, eLearning, subscription based services, tax collection, viewing of live events, video, productivity tools, collaboration services, film and television promotion, and more. I can’t wait to see all the new applications that we will see in 2010 that take advantage of the new desktop features in AIR 2 as well as the mobile release with support for Android and iPhone.

Everybody on the Adobe Flash Platform team would like to take this opportunity to thank all the developers, partners and customers that have provided feedback, participated in our betas, supported and adopted Adobe AIR over the last two years. We actually started the birthday party a little early in Barcelona at Mobile World Congress when we demonstrated AIR working on Android. We also received an early birthday present when Adobe® Acrobat® Connect™ Pro Mobile, an iPhone application built using Packager for iPhone was listed on Apple’s App Store now available on the iPhone. The number of AIR apps in the App Store powered by AIR keeps growing and in a few weeks we will be highlighting a few of the AIR apps for the iPhone so stay tuned.

Adobe AIR 2 Beta Now Available!

Today we are very excited to announce the availability of the Adobe AIR 2 beta (runtime and SDK) for Windows, Mac and Linux. At Adobe MAX, we provided you with a preview of Adobe AIR 2 and now you will have a chance to test drive the beta version. AIR 2 builds on the success of AIR 1 by giving developers new capabilities and even tighter integration with the desktop. This is the first time we have sim-shipped for all three major operating systems for both AIR and Flash Player (also in beta) and represents a major step forward in delivering on the promise of the Open Screen Project. In addition, the Flash Player team has also announced the availability of Player 10.1 on Adobe Labs.

HTC Hero: The first Android device with Flash

Adrian Ludwig from Adobe shared some very exciting news when he recently demoed Flash Player running inside of the new HTC Hero web browser. This makes the HTC Hero the first Android smartphone with Flash. There is a press release that provides some additional information on the announcement. You may be thinking — will Adobe AIR run on Android in the future? We are not making any announcements, but if this is something you would like to see, please drop us a comment below or through our feedback form.

Creating cinematic effecs with Adobe Pixel Bender and JavaScript

The team at Ext created an Adobe AIR application called Pixel Bender Explorer that demonstrates how to apply compelling animations and other effects to your JavaScript-based AIR applications. The effects are accomplished using Flash Player 10′s new Pixel Bender technology, the same technology behind many filters and effects in Adobe After Effects software. Aaron Conran from Ext discusses on the blog post how he was able to to access these effects from JavaScript and integrate this functionality into the Ext JavaScript framework.

The application allows you to load a sample video and image and then apply filters effects in real-time. It’s impressive to see the responsiveness when you load a video, apply an effect and adjust the supported properties (angle, direction, center point, etc.). Try loading the sample video, selecting "RadialCaleidoscope" and then slowing adjusting the "angle" property.
