Photoshop Tutorial - The beginner basics
Over the holiday break I created a simple birthday card for my son's birthday. As I was doing so, I was thinking that it would make a good example of a VERY basic Photoshop tutorial. If you already understand Layers, Selection tools, gradients and layer styles, then this tutorial is not for you...unless you're a Mets fan. If you're not familiar with some of the aforementioned Photoshop features, then pull up a chair and watch this simple 8 minute tutorial. Click on the link below to watch
PS - Since I've already committed myself above - Let's go Mets!

thank you very much! as for me there is no such thing as Basic Tutorial, as even a Pro can find something interesting and useful. So and me found two useful tools into your tutor ))
[DR - Terrific! Thanks for the comment.]

i'm not supposed to download anything from the net(like flash player). but i want to watch your tutorial.?????
[DR - Terry, the Flash player is the most widely distributed piece of software in the world. It's on over 99% of all computers in the world. It is also a small download (~1.4MB). I totally agree that workstations should not be general computers, but in this case, I think it safe to download the flash player so that you can view flash video content. I hope you enjoy the tutorials when you can view them!]

As a Photoshop beginner, I found this to be quite helpful and appreciate you taking the time to put it together. As an avid Red Sox fan, I admire your dedication to the Mets!
[DR - Ha ha, don't you know most Mets fans choose the Red Sox as their AL team? ;-) We do have a lot in common, except for winning in the last couple of year - maybe this will be our year.
Glad that you found the tutorial helpful. It makes me feel good when I know I've reached people. Cheers...]

I just bought PHoto shop elements 6 (my first Photo shop). How do I change the order of the photos since I am trying to combine photos from several cameras and want to organize them in the order of our vacation.
[DR - A great place to start would be at the Photoshop Elements support page where there is not only ways to troubleshoot problems but videos on how to do stuff. Check it out at: http://www.adobe.com/support/photoshopelements/
hope this helps - DR]

Thanks for a great basic tutorial. I now just need to find some more! Is there anything on slicing as a video? That would be awesome! Regards, Claire, Sydney, Australia
[DR - Claire, not sure what you mean but I'll be the answer is yes. If you let me know more specifically what you're looking for, I will try to point you in the right direction.]

Wow! All I can say is you saved me!! Just a little info can do so much.
Truthfully, I'm a hands on person and HATE to read the manual... figured I'd pick it up easily...wrong! LOL. Being that it's midnight, I had no one else to talk to... again, Mahalo nui loa! Thank you so much!
[DR - So glad that it worked out for you and that the tutorials was of some benefit! always happy to hear when these are helpful!]

Dear Dennis:
I was going to an interview for a position which required a knowledge of Photoshop. I have to say, you are god send. I went through your tutorial and re-created a logo for the Employee as a sample of work. You guessed it. I passed with flying colors. Thanks you. You are great!
[DR - Thanks! It is ALWAYS great to hear from users when the tutorials have been helpful. Thank you for taking the time to post.]

I love the Photoshop software but sad thing to say is we the "Deaf people" cannot hear when you use the video for explanation in the processing. The visual seems to be somewhat clear at times but other times Im trying to figure out where and what is it called when the presenter speaks with instructions via audio and also the sample shown small letter size that is hard to read. Can you have closed captions added to those video demonstrations?
Are there any scripts?
I will have to ask someone to assist with me. Thanks!
[DR - Barbie, thanks for your comments. I happened to have attended Rochester Institute of Technology for one year and it is one of the top schools for the hearing impared. As a result, I got to understand the challenges that you face and even learn a bit of sign language! ;-)
I think that close captioning could be a thing of the future for us given that we have added speech-to-text technology in our beta of Soundbooth. This process analyzes the spoken word in the audio file and transcribes it to text. That being said, it is probably still a ways off and there is no way for me to go back and add transcription to a web recording. I would point you to many of my other tutorials that include PDF documents with step-by-step instructions on how to do certain things. I will keep you in mind as I prepare some tutorials!]

I WANT PDF NOTES ABOUT PHOTOSHOP CS VERSION
[DR - without having reviewed the tutorial in question, I would guess that 95-100% of the tutorial will work with Photoshop CS.]

I just got Photoshop elements 6 and need assistance. Is there a beginners tutorial?
[DR - usually, there is a number of items included in the product and certainly there is some information on the website that can help you. good luck!]

Thanks so much! I was given a new responsibility at work that requires using photoshop and was completely lost when I opened it (ya know, the sink or swim routine). This gave me the perfect jumping off point.

This was just right. I am PC literate but a PS newbie. Thanks, I needed a little direction in the layering concept (and the backround copy really fit the bill too).
[DR - Hey Melissa, glad that it helps and thanks for letting me know that it was useful for you. Some times I'm thinking that these tutorials are too easy, but this one continues to get comments and views years after it's been done, so it's doing something right.
You might check out a recent new tutorial on Photoshop that I did for Adobe TV - it's at http://blogs.adobe.com/genesisproject/2009/04/adobe_beginner_classes_episode_12.html#more
Cheers, D]
