Premiere Pro 4.0.1 is live and you need to get it!!!

Yes, it's that simple - you need to get it... Why?

Well, of course there some little bug fixes that you probably have never encountered. Or if you are encountering them, then hopefully this addresses them! But more importantly it give you some wonderful new functionality!

Here's what's new about this version
OMF Export - for those people doing some serious audio work or need to interface with ProTools, here's the ticket. This has been a long time coming and I'm glad to say we're finally there.

AAF Import/Export - This is for people who want to interact with Avid systems. It can't get any better than this can it?

Final Cut Pro Import - Oh snap...it can... This is not, I repeat NOT an EDL. It's much better. Cuts, PIPs, transitions, keyframes of basic transforms like scale and position all come across. If you're a FCP editor whose wanted to have some of the integration of Production Premium, well now you can. Edit in FCP, export to XML, import into Premiere Pro and finish with whatever other Adobe applications you need to use.

Other things: Surcode support, edit in Audition (Windows only), and some things that will allow our third parties to access some necessary funtionality for their hardware.

So, in one fell swoop, we've opened up interoperability between the major audio system of the world and the two major competitors in the NLE world. We want to play nice with everyone!

By the way, you may have seen some chatter about the RED plugin. It's coming but we've held off a little bit longer because we're getting some great feedback from users about whats needed. This will be an evolving process, but it will be worth the wait.

Get the software below...

Adobe Beginner Classes "Bootleg" Episode #3 is live!

Adobe AIR just went version 1.5 and Adobe Media Player is sure to follow. As always, I encourage you to watch this via the Adobe player, but if you can't wait, then here it is.

During this episode, I use a couple of presets along with a little Turbulent Displace and CC Vector Blur to make something cool. Really, that's all it is...it's just cool looking. Hope you enjoy.

nvidia and Adobe = match made in heaven

nvidia has recently released the Quadro CX board for PC users. This is a high powered graphics workstation class card that is not only capable of terrific performance, but is specifically tuned to leverage GPU accerlation in Adobe applications.

The cherry on the top for me is the inclusion of Elemental's plugin. This plugin makes h.264 encoding just plain fast. To me, if you do H.264 encoding, than you should just get this card for the software. It's fast, its GPU enabled and its designed for CS4. What's not to like?

Yes, this card is expensive for some, but if you're a professional, you owe it to yourself to give this a look. Check out the link on the nvidia site to get some more ideas of where this card helps Adobe.

I've installed it and will be working on getting my PC system up to date and up to snuff. Once I have it going, I'll be sure to let you know what I find. In addition, we may see some videos from other Adobe bloggers that will give you a video experience on what's out there.

As a PS - I've been dealing with computer crashes and blogging issues, so I've been remiss in my posting. Hence the deluge today. There's a lot to talk about and I've got a back log of things to post. Right now, I'm doing it via the web interface...yuck. Hopefully, in a week or two, I'll be back up and running.

Yet another cautionary tale of backing up your data (and in praise of Tekserve!)

I won't belabor the point but get straight to the conclusion: If you don't think your computer will ever blow up - you're WRONG! Back up your stuff!!!

Boy, I feel better already....

I was presenting to a FCP group in NYC that had about 200 people that night and had an appointment with ABC NY earlier in the afternoon. My Macbook Pro was acting funny and crashed - no really, Macs crash too! :-p

Restart...hmmm. no workee... restart again...hmmm... same thing...GRRR.

Zap the PRAM three times...restart...nothing...double GRRR....

disconnect everything...start in safe mode...nothing!!!

Call the Apple shops as a card carrying member of ProCare...Of course, all three shops are booked up and unavailable.

Full panic ensues...

Call my buddy Matt down at Tekserve who says bring the unit on down. Yes!

How does the story end? Well, even the boys at Tekserve couldn't fix it in time for my ABC meeting and evening event, but they went the distance and provided superior support and service and got me my laptop back as quickly as possible. They kept in communication about the status and got the unit back to me quickly. If you're in the NY metro area, I can recommend no dealer more highly than I do Tekserve.

As for me, lesson learned. While I didn't actually lose any data because Tekserve, saved my bacon, I've backed up my data a few times already and am sending my laptop back to the Adobe IT department to do a clean wipe and reinstall to make sure something like this is a horrible, distant, forgotten memory.

BACK UP YOUR DATA - you've got a chunk of your life inside of it!

Flash, ARM, MAX, AIR and more

As a guy who primarily focuses on Adobe's video products, I look at Flash from a different perspective than many. That being said, it's noteworthy for video and Flash designers alike to pay attention to the goings on in the world of Flash

ARM is a chip manufacturer that specializes in developing processors that are used in mobile devices such as cell phones. Here's one of many articles on it from the Mac perspective. Of course, they'd like to see it on the iPhone. Check it out here: ARM and Flash

MAX is going on and its as close to an Adobe love fest as you're likely to encounter. During this big Adobe event, we've outlined several things based around the world of Flash and no doubt more to come. One that I know of is a LiveCycle enabled client review system, similar to ClipNotes but offering a bit more for the enterprise customer.

AIR just went to version 1.5. AIR if you're not aware (no rhyme intended!) stands for Adobe Integrated Runtime. That's a fancy way of saying its an application environment or 'middleware' I'm really big on the idea of AIR as I can envision all kinds of AIR apps that are designed for refining specific tasks in video workflows - whether it's broadcast or post production. It's also a terribly convenient way to tie into 3rd party systems. I think this will take a while to maturate, but by 2010, I think we'll see some really interesting things in the way of video AIR apps.

And if you don't have it already, Flash Player 10 has been out there for a month or so and it's the latest and greatest from the Flash Player team.

Baseball is my favorite support or worst addiction depending on your perspective and its bugged me to no end that MLB was using Microsoft's Silverlight. My thinking was, "Why? Don't you want to reach the largest audience on the web? Isn't our Flash technology good enough? Why won't you get me Mets season tickets?" Okay, maybe the last one is a bit out of line... ;-) I'm incredibly excited to say that MLB has turned it around and is going back to Flash for it's video services for the 2009 season. Get the details here: MLB comes back to Flash

Lastly, here's another link on general Flash updates and tools from a tech website perspective: Upgrades to Flash Tools

In praise of HP warranties

Often times when people consider buying new hardware, the idea of the warranty rarely plays into the decision.  In a sense I understand it - you don't buy something with the idea that it's going to fail.  However, with technology there are so many tiny things (read 'nano-scale') that makes the idea of a DOA (dead on arrival) experience sometimes a reality.

Such was the case when I received a souped up, tricked out, HP 9400 with dual AMD quad cores.  Yes, this machine ROCKS and I'm excited to tweek it some more and make it my favorite PC.  However, I'm a month behind my coworkers because the motherboard turned out to be bad.

In the process, I learned that HP gives their workstation class machines a 3 year onsite warranty! Cha-ching!

So, why a month to get a replacement motherboard?  Well, turns out that we (HP and I) incorrectly diagnosed the original problem as a bad power supply.  After that, I actually received a second dead motherboard (yeah, you can't dream this stuff up), but third times the charm and it was great to have a guy come to my house (Edwin) and do the dirty work instead of me.

The entire experience was terrific given that I had hoped to never deal with any HP service.  That being said, the people at HP did a terrific job and I can wholeheartedly recommend HP not only from their technology and products, but also their service...

Adobe Beginner Classes Episode #12 is Live!

Episode #12 is live via Adobe TV.

I hope you'll give it a look.  In this episode I cover Premiere Pro's Media Browser panel (cool) and Soundbooth's volume matching capabilities (even cooler!)

As an aside, I've had to forgo the green screen and Ultra work simply because it doubles the overall production time that it takes to produce these.  I hope to bring it back, but I don't think too many of you are overly anxious to see my mug all of the time anyway. ;-)

Here's a direct link: Episode #12

PS - I'll have another ABC bootleg episode coming out real soon. It's a fun little After Effect Project. Of course, I'll post it here for you to play with when the episode goes live...
