This is a great tutorial for getting a grip on the basics of After Effects.<br />

During this 20 minute tutorial, we cover a decent amount of ground and it helps give you a basic understanding of such things as ramps (gradients), layers, 3D position, null objects, parenting, nesting and several more things.
