Announcing Adobe Audition 3

It's been especially hard to keep my mouth shut about this one lately, but I'm thrilled to report that we announced Adobe Audition 3 this morning. The team is especially proud of this release, not just because of overcoming the challenge of producing it at the same time as Soundbooth, but mainly because it adds both brand new exciting capabilities and polishes existing workflows. Take a look at the new features summary, or the more thorough What's New PDF, to see what we've added--we think there's something for everyone.

Some of the highlights include:

  • MIDI recording and editing in a piano roll sequencer
  • VSTi support
  • Spectral frequency selection paintbrush
  • Spectral frequency healing brush
  • Marque editing in the spectral pan and phase displays
  • Multitrack auto-crossfades and fade handles on every clip
  • Grouped-clip editing in the multitrack view
  • New effects including Convolution Reverb, Analog Delay, a new Mastering tool, and a Guitar Suite
  • Time stretching using the Radius engine from iZotope
  • A dedicated top/tail view in the edit view for tuning the start and end of a file
  • On-clip controls for volume and fades in the edit view
  • New Adaptive Noise Reduction and Phase Correction tools
  • Improved performance with N-core support in the mixing engine

We should be shipping well before the end of the year--I'd say in or before November. The price remains the same at $349 US, and we have a $99 upgrade for anyone who has a previous version of Audition, even if it came as part of a collection or suite. You can pre-order now if you'd like, and there will be a demo version posted at or around the time we ship.

More personally, this rounds out quite a year for me and for the whole audio team. It's been an exhausting, challenging, exhilarating ride trying to bring a new take on audio to the world at the same time we were advancing a well-loved product to the next level. I couldn't be more proud of the team and, while there are always things we wished we could have done better, and others we wish we had done more or less of, on the whole I hope you'll agree that this is a bang-up release for our audio workhorse and a huge step forward for Adobe in audio. Now I'm going to take my fatigue, my wife, and myself on a vacation so don't be surprised if this spot is dark for a little while. :) More news when I return!

Hi there
wondering if you can help. I'm an independent radio producer working to a deadline editing a programme using Adobe Audition. I'm panicking as Audition has started to malfunction - I can't edit in multitrack mode, and when I edited in Edit mode I found that my original raw material had also been cut and didn't exist anymore in the system - a problem i've never come across before. The cursor won't appear and also I can't grab and move my clips around the screen.
Basically I'm not going to make my deadline because of this malfunction and I need help pretty quick to avoid a disaster!
Thanks!

Laura Haydon

That sounds like a strange problem! Something may be corrupted, either the session or application itself. Your best bet is to try Adobe support. --Hart

Was wondering if you can give some more insight on surface control support for Audition 3.0. The features page gave little additional nfo about it. Will Audition 3 support 24 track automation? Thanks much...

Kenan, Audition works out of the box with any controller that follows the Mackie Control protocol. In addition, we have an SDK that allows any hardware manufacturer to add native support to Audition as a plug-in if they wish. --Hart

$99 for something we should have gotten with the Suite in the first place. Doesn't anyone here feel ripped off? I know to some of you its nickel and dime. But that is how companies like Adobe rip us off.

I love the refinements in Audition 3 (I got my upgrade a few days ago).

I am curious if anyone has reported a problem with switching back and forth between Multitrack and Editing views?

When I go to the Editing view from Multitrack view I cannot play the audio file under any circumstances. Returning to Multitrack view restores proper operation.

I have set the hardware to be correct, the software simply does not respond to any transport controls and the waveform just sits there. It is not that the cursor line moves and the output meter shows signal but I cannot hear it, the software just doesn't do anything until I return to Multitrack view.

Any ideas or similar reports? The software is so new I haven't found any references to bugs or problems of this nature.

I know you are not Customer Support but until I can track it down or get it fixed I have to stick with 2.0! The Adobe support FAQ is useless in this circumstance.

Thanks
Steve, I haven't heard of this happening before, but I'll ask here at the office. You might also post to the user-to-user forum to see if they have any advice. http://www.adobe.com/support/forums/index.html

It would be nice if there was special pricing if you had a product that includes Sound Booth.. such as CS3 Master Collection or Production Premium.

The product summary says that an internet or phone connection is required for production registration. Two questions:

(1) I don't have internet access of any kind on my studio computer, will I still be able to register via telephone? I am assuming the answer is yes, but I'd like a confirmation before upgrading from 2.0 to 3.0.

(2) I use my laptop as a mobile recording device, then edit and mix the tracks on my studio machine. Will I still be able to have 3.0 on both machines? I understand that some people think they can get 2 for the price of 1, but I never have both running at the same time and this setup is an integral part of my rig. Will this be a problem?

(3) Not really a question, but thank you for adding VSTi!!!!

1) Yes. There will be a number to call and they'll walk you through it. 2) Yes. The license specifically allows this (a single user to run the software on a desktop and laptop but not at the same time). 3) You're welcome. :) --Hart

As an old CoolEdit and Photoshop user, I am -very- excited about the possibility of editing audio in spectral view using Photoshop-style brush and marquee tools.

Looking forward to Audition 3! (And maybe even a spectral clone stamp in the future?... :)

Glad to hear that Audition 3 is going to be available at the upgrade price even if it was originally purchased as part of a suite. I called this morning to ask that very question and the Customer Support rep was under the impression that it would NOT be available for a $99 upgrade if it was part of suite. You might let the guys on the phones know about this so they're giving out the right information. Thanks!

Thanks for the heads-up! I'll get that clarified with the support folks. --Hart

I love audition and am thrilled with the new midi feature. I would love to learn more about it and how can I use differnet instruments . Does anyone have a decent place for me to learn this?--I was editing sound and music with a razorblade and china marker :)

That's great news. I just placed a pre-order for Aud 3 and this is a year from when I purchased v2.0. I too have been using the product since the 'cool edit' days and I'm glad someone like ADOBE has this product going forward. I'm hoping v3 can help us clear out "session audio files" that are NOT being used after the final mix and master is finished. Audition creates way too many audio files and never deletes them. There should be a way to flush this unused files (which can take up tons of room on a hd). Why does audition record a new audio file everytime you record over an existing track? Or why can't you at least finalize a track when you're done so that ONE file is the final result on the hd? That's my only real gripe with Aud. It's a SUPERB product even with this trouble-some attribute.

I just want to put my support in for the above mention.
I really want to see Audition integrated into Premiere CS3. I want to be able to right-click my audio and Edit in Audition (not Soundbooth).
Any word on if this will be available?

Finally the midi recording feature...

since i am a user of this software since cool edit i want to say (GOD BLESS ADOBE AND THE AUDITION TEAM)

:)

What about a discount for recent 2.0 purchasers?

This is really great news. I'm hopeful, as are all existing Audition customers (hint, hint!), that it will also fully integrate with Premiere Pro CS3 as it did in the past...

But why all the secrecy? I'd been scanning the Adobe main site, Labs, Dev Center and all the usual Adobe hiding holes, but hadn't seen hide nor hair of Audition 3 'til now.

Again, thanks for the announcement!
