9/11 report experience
9/11 report experience: Staci Kramer of WIRED collects together various reformattings of the final report of the US commission on the 9/11 attacks. If you're active online then none of this is new; but I was struck by how different people found different aspects of the overall user experience to improve. Jason Kottke wanted links to parts of the summary... Michele Catalano converted the PDF to smaller and faster text... Vivisimo let you drill into areas on demand... Sid Steward optimized the compression and added PDF bookmarks... Andrew Grumet made the concise recommendations a portal to the rest of the document, and also provided an XML version of this approach... Audible.com repackaged it in audio for people to listen to sequentially while doing other things. Steward has a good quote: "I feel that anybody who wants people to read their work should make it as easy as possible to read. PDF is very easy to create and post online. Adding a few PDF features (such as bookmarks) takes a little more work, but it adds so much value." But look at all the different ways different people found to add value to this piece of content...!
