To correct a misspelled keyword, Control (Mac) / Right Mouse (Win) -click on the keyword in the Keyword List panel and select “Edit Keyword Tag”. Correct the spelling, click Edit and the keyword will be updated on all images that have that keyword applied.

This is not possible when the correct spelled keyword is already existing. It then gives the messages that the name is already in use. The only way I found to work around this is to ad the right keyword and delete the misspelled one.

You are correct, if you already have created the keyword (spelled correctly), Lightroom does not allow you to add it again. In this case, I would simply filter based on the incorrect keyword and – before deleting the misspelled one – add the correct one. Then delete the misspelled one from the images and from the Keyword list. I also make sure to leave the Catalog Settings > Metadata > Offer suggestions from recently entered values turned on so that Lightroom helps to autocomplete my keywords.

Double click on the keyword in the keyword list also opens the keyword edit dialog. This is my prefered way to edit keywords. (I use Win7/64)
