With the Move tool selected, Option (Mac) / Alt (Win) -dragging a layer in the image area creates a copy of the selected layer(s).
You can also Option (Mac) / Alt (Win) -drag in the Layers panel to duplicate a layer – select the layer(s) and drag (up or down) until yo see a heavy black line between the layers and release.
Command + J (Mac) | Control + J (Win) will also duplicate the selected layer(s). Note: this shortcut works for Layer Groups as well.
Cmd-Opt drag precludes having to select the Move tool.
Thanks Mac, great addition!
Dear Julieanne,
the Option (Mac) / Alt (Win) -dragging a layer tip on top of your post works great and is a time saver for duplicating a layer or even a group to it’s desired place.
What keyboard shortcut works for duplicating a layer or a group below the original instead of above?
As a longtime Adobe user I wish the company would turn back from the subscription model.
€61,50 equals $83 for Europeans. US user pay $50. This makes a single user like me so unhappy. Hopefully I win my Greencard next year.
Last question please.
I’m on a Mac and use the english language for the OS as well as for the Creative Suite 6 Master Collection I bought last year. But for any reason here from Germany I can’t open Adobe’s US site anymore. Safari always put a slash de behind the address line. Have you any idea why or a workaround?
Thanks a lot for teaching the community and keep going your great work, Julieanne!
All the best,
Holger
You can option/alt drag the Layer group below the other one to duplicate it.
I don’t know about the US site – I would post the issue to either of these forums to see if other customers are experiencing the same problem and if so, if they have found a solution. In addition, posting it here will allow the product management team to see it.
