    I have already created a folder on an external hard drive containing subfolders with all my images. I want Lightroom to recognize the external hard drive so that I can make more room available on my internal drive by taking these images off. Can it be done? Using Mac OS.

      Import the files from the external drive.

        Using the method you presented on copying files and folders to an external hard drive, I decided to move all the folders from the internal drive to the external drive avoiding the necessity to re-import all these photos. It seems to be working fine. This will take a little while but probably shorter than importing. It also has the benefit of allowing me to decide whether to keep a folder of images no longer needed or wanted. When I import new photos they will go on the external drive. I always backup my photos to another external drive. Thanks for your help.
