CS4 Everyday Timesaving Really Resonates In Helsinki & Oslo
Greetings, my friends! Just a quick update from the road to let you know that we're half-way through the Production Premium CS4 tour, and it's been an overwhelming success!
This time around, I've created a slightly different program, focusing on the 'Everyday Timesaving' aspects of PPCS4 in the first half of the show, with some intense editing workflow and post-production features in the second half. Needless to say, I think it's been resonating very well with our audiences, and the responses have been nothing short of phenomenal.
Having said that, two of the bigger 'hits' of the tour, thus far, have been the showcasing of our RED camera support and the new abilities in PPRO CS4.0.1 to import FCP Projects. Again, unlike launch tours, I've spent a good deal of time going through the entire workflow process (and highlighting all of the ins-and-outs with regard to setting the RED Source Panel attributes) along with demonstrating real-world workflows for sharing projects between FCP and Premiere. The latter has gone over particularly well, because I'm really stressing the idea of 'sharing the love'; making life easier by using all the tools at your disposal; and now, more seamlessly than ever before. The message is appreciated, the time-saving aspects undeniable, and the sincerity, well, I am nothing if not sincere and honest ;)
I've now arrived in Copenhagen and look forward to our seminar on Friday, spending the weekend visiting some customers in Sweden, and then the final show on Monday in Stockholm.
Thanks to everyone in Helsinki and Oslo who attended. You truly make the experience of touring and presenting worthwhile, and it's my esteemed pleasure to be able to spend some time (and save some time) with you. ;)
Until next time...
Blog on.

Hello Jason! Thanks for a great seminar in Oslo. I found it very useful to attend. I have a few questions:
1) Do you have a link to that movie you showed us with all the greescreen stuff done by HBO?
2) Is Geotagging possible in the OnLocation software? Some pocket cameras now have geo-data and I think it will be more and more common. And besides, it is very cool :)
3)Do you have an email or website for your InDesign guru? Do you know if he's coming to Norway in the near future? Our company want to make use of InDesign scripting and we have lots of questions we want to ask.
Thanks again for a great show in Oslo. Rock on dude!

Hey John! Thanks for all the kind words. In response to your questions:
(1) Unfortunately, the John Adams reel is not available for distribution. We are privileged to be able to showcase to you in seminars, but sadly, that's as far as it can go;
(2) With regard to GeoTagging, if you expand the 'EXIF Schema for EXIF-Specific Properties' dropdown in the Metadata panel, you'll see that you have multiple fields for GPS data including latitude/longitude/time stamp/altitude, etc. Whether or not these can be auto-populated by your camera, I don't know. You can also create your own specific 'geo-tag' metadata fields in bridge.
(3) For InDesign-Guru questions, look no further than my fellow evangelist and blogger, Rufus Deuchler. You can contact him directly through his blog at http://blogs.adobe.com/rufus
Take care, and all the best...--JL

Hello Jason.
It was wonderful to see your seminar yesterday. I really enjoyed it, even though I work mainly in graphic design. The features you showed in Photoshop were absolutely amazing, and I am very interested to try more editing in Premiere as I tried it many versions ago, with little success.
I hope you come back to Norway soon. ;)

Hi Elina! Thanks for attending yesterday, and I'm glad to hear that you were inspired by PSCS4 *and* Premiere Pro, despite being more on the 'design side' of things. This is exactly the type of feedback we love to hear...true cross-pollinating between the different workflows/disciplines (ie, design and video coming together). If you've got any other specific questions with regard to the video/PS workflow or working together with the apps, please let me know. All the best. ---JL

Helsinki greets you, sir Jason!
The thing about xml cutlists being interchangable between FCP and Premiere was good news in many ways. That opens a simpler way from FCP to After Effects. And many attending dudes & dudettes I saw afterwards really appreciate the snow angel dip after hot sauna. Respect.

Tommi, you're a true gentleman and scholar. ;) It's great to hear the feedback, and indeed I believe you hit it right on the nose, regarding the FCP import workflow: it's really just a simpler way to AE with full support of PSD files. Keeps everybody happy! As for my snow-angel dip after hot sauna, well, you know whom I have to thank for making that possible ;P Bring on the ice!! All the best, my friend. --JL

Hi again, Jason!
The transcribe feature is interesting to us as we are corporate videos in english. Unfortunately,a highly technical language gives poor result in the auto transcribing.
Is there a way of embedding a prewritten script into the metadata, just for search engine pruposes?
Thanks again for your time and inspiration!
Cheers,
Geir Waaler

Hi Geir. Well, depending on the file type you'd be working with (where some have external XML files containing the metadata, vs. embedded) it *would* theoretically be possible, though I can't say that I've tried it myself. Granted, the metadata 'script' that's generated from Speech Search is also timecoded; not that it would be a problem to modify, but again, it could be a fairly lengthy process. Let me have a look and see what else I can find out. But off the top of my head, it should be a possible to modify (and replace) existing metadata with pre-written content in the XML. ---JL

Hi Jason,
I was unable to attend the show in Copenhagen :-(
Do you know if there will be any video-recordings of your "healing" available later ?
- Mikkel
---
Hi Mikkel. Sorry you were unable to attend. I don't have any recordings of the show-proper, but I have recorded some videos for AdobeTV which will be released shortly. The videos are based around some of the 'time saving' new features that I covered yesterday, but of course, they're a bit more 'marketing' than the usual fare. Hoping to be back in the spring, however, so perhaps I'll catch you then, and if you've got any questions, just let me know. All the best. --JL

Hey Jason!
Thank you for the great show in Helsinki, it's a shame you didn't post any pictures from there though. You're seriously an Adobe-God. I hope that you're coming back to Helsinki soon, as it's always a pleasure to have you here.
I thank you for the new cool time saving features, maybe you could try to add a shortcut to outer glow as well?
All the best for you, and thanks for making me wiser, and wiser everytime you're here.
I love to show off my knowledge to my friends, again, thank you for that!
With love,
Inka

Hey Inka! Well, thank you for the *very* nice comments. Quite the endorsement indeed ;) I loved the idea of the 'shortcut to Outer Glow'...sounds like a good book title! I'm hoping to return to Helsinki some time in the late spring/early summer (most likely, a master class tour of some sort) so stay tuned and I'll be sure to keep you posted. I *do* wish I had taken some pics during my day at Suomenlinna (except, perhaps during my 'snow angel' activities!) as it was truly beautiful. Take care, and all the best to you as well. ---JL

Hi again, Jason!
Having entered your realms by using Premiere for years, I've not made it to fully include After Effects in my workflow.
Much of the basic titling, lower thirds work and so on still takes place in Premiere.
Yes, I know it's an insult to AE. Facing the healing power of The Jase, I kneel before you to admit my sins and repent.
Do you have any general thoughts on what the workflow between PPRO and AE should be, given the fact that they overlap somewhat in functionality?
Again, your presence is making an impact. I now spread the love giving free classes in Photoshop on my own workplace, breeding new Adobe customers every day.
Peace, love, and Adobe!
Cheers,
Geir Waaler

Hello again, Geir! Well, as far as the general workflow, you've already spelled out a bit of what I typically showcase, which is largely based around using Dynamic Link from AE to Premiere. This is especially useful for lower third creation, and mainly text and background animations. I can't emphasize enough the power and flexibility of the Text Animation Presets. Coupling that with any kind of keying you may need to do (ie, Green Screen/Blue Screen) and you've got the award-winning effect 'Keylight' at your disposal in AE as well. Bring your Green clips from Premiere in AE, key them, do compositing in AE w/PSCS4, and DynLink back to Premiere, all without rendering.
This is *my* primary workflow/usage, but of course, there are countless other ways these two can interact. And don't forget, Dynamic Link can now go the other way, so you can bring Premiere timelines into AE, and do any kind of finishing/color correction, effects treatment there as well. And, because both apps work natively with PSD files, that opens up another pandora's box of possibilities. Hope that helps, and keep me posted. ---JL

Hi,
Can you use OnLocation to recorde 1080i/p from dvcpro (hvx200e)?
or do i have to get an firestore?
Håvard
---
Hey Håvard. All frame rates/frame sizes should work, but keep this in mind: OnLo only captures to QuickTime (Mac-only files) or AVI (Windows-only files) with 2 channels of audio. That’s true of ANY flavors of DVCPROHD in OnLocation. It does NOT capture MXF/4-channel audio files. But as far as 1080i/p, shouldn't be a problem. All the best. --JL
