Vocal Treatments: SubMixing/Compression/Reverb (Part 1)
Hello again, my friends! This post will pick up where the last video left off, having just pitch-corrected a lead vocal. In this 3-part series, I'll start by taking you through the process of Submixing in Adobe Audition 3. Following the bussing of background vocals, I'll show you how to apply compression and reverb on the lead vocal, and use the same settings (as a rack preset) on the 'bussed' backgrounds. Incidentally, because compression is *always* one of the hottest topics, I will follow up with a separate video on using only the compressor (possibly for drums/bass, etc)...but this will give you a taste!

Also, since we're talking about the making of Johnny Encore's Chromakey You, I thought it only fitting to present the finished music video here, for the first time, in stereo *and* HD. Enjoy...

Stay tuned for Part 2, coming shortly...

Excellent once again, J! Will you ever fail to deliver?
Anyhoo, could you do one about sound fx editing? Maybe with directional stereo or 5:1 stuff? Probably not that useful to, but surely very, very cool.

;) Thanks, Floris! You're very kind. Glad you liked this one. More coming on compression, limiting, and mastering. Be well. --JL

Haha...thank *you*, Maestro :) I've actually been thinking about doing an episode for SFX creation/mixing/editing. I don't believe I've got any recorded in the series, but that's great food for thought (and I'll be recording new episodes, mid-August). As for the directional stereo/5.1, I also need to do some tutes on that. I actually had done some through Total Training several years back; but again, great feedback my friend. Let me see what I can work-up for the next season, and I will definitely try and get some of that in. If not, perhaps I could do a 'quickie' at the home studio..stay tuned. --JL

hey jason
i'm not shure, if i'm right at this part of the blog. i just wanted to say THANK YOU (and of course also greg and rufus!)thousand times for that great, informative, never(!) boring "session" here in zürich.
it must be some kind of an art, if you can keep people excited for about 9hours. one could feel the passion for what you do, especially yours!
first i asked my self, why you guys call yourselves "evangelists", we don't really use that term in europe, i thought "that does sound a bit religious". then i understood, it IS some kind of a "religion" or philosophy for you guys.
(later i found out, that evangelist means something like "representer")
so, i wanted to give that (feed)back to you ... nothings left to say,
keep having fun!
grüsse aus zürich ;-)

Hey Manon! Well, thank you for all the nice comments. The event in Zürich was truly great fun; everything from the venue, the catering, the attendees ;) ...just perfect. I'm only sorry that Greg and I couldn't stay longer during the 'after-party'. Sometimes it's hard to tell how people are reacting to (9 hours) of content---but just as you said, everyone seemed truly interested, engaged, and inspired--and that's what try to do;) Be well, and I look forward to returning soon. All the best, ~JL
