A new and simplified Notetaking solution for DPS

Many of my DPS customers want to incorporate note taking into their DPS apps. Over the years, there have been several examples posted to DevNet, including one by me back in 2013. One of the challenges with that solution was that it requires the designer to make multiple copies of the underlying HTML file in order to support placing the note taking overlay on more than one page in an article. I have gone back and revised that code to make it work with a single HTML file that supports any number of pages in an article. You can read about the new technique here.

The new system has CSS styling to help match it to your brand. In addition, I’ve added a button to email a specific note as well as the whole set of notes. I’ve also been working on extending the system to include thumbnail images of the specific pages in the email. I’ve got a little more work to do on that before I’m ready to share it, but keep your eyes here (and on DevNet) for a follow-up article about embedding images in email messages from DPS.

Background Downloads now available in DPS outside of Newsstand!

Adobe DPS has leveraged Apple Newsstand background downloads to allow publishers to send issues to their readers while they sleep. Enterprise publishers who use DPS often can’t use Newsstand because they either publish private apps using Apple’s iOS Developer Enterprise Program or they don’t produce content that Apple will approve for Newsstand. In iOS 8, however, Apple opened background downloads to apps outside of the Newsstand. As a result, Enterprise DPS customers can now push content to their readers, so long as the readers are using iOS8.

Use Powerpoint presentations in Adobe DPS

Many of my Enterprise customers have asked for a way to bring PowerPoint content to DPS. While InDesign provides a robust design platform for creating interactive DPS experiences, InDesign isn’t always readily accessible to a salesperson or sales management who need to deploy presentations to their tablet-enabled sales force. In addition, they often have many years of approved presentation content in PowerPoint that is readily available. In order to use that content in DPS, a design team would usually rebuild the content in InDesign or perhaps use a third party tool to export the presentation to HTML and then import it to DPS. With the release of R32.1 of Adobe DPS, Enterprise DPS customers can now export their PowerPoint presentations directly to their DPS accounts using a new PowerPoint add-in. The add-in is available for Windows 7 and higher customers who use PowerPoint 2010 or 2013 in 32bit mode. There is no Macintosh version, as PowerPoint for Mac does not have a add-in architecture similar to Windows. You can download a localized version of the add-in from here.

The add-in supports most animations and even video. The add-in installs the desktop Content Viewer, too, so you don’t need InDesign to proof your presentation before publishing it to the Folio Producer. The ease with which a business user can convert their presentations to DPS is shocking, and I believe that customers will be delighted with the results.
