I only just found out today that Bruce has passed. It's terribly sad news. I'm an old friend of his from his Edinburgh days. We used to play in a band together - he on bass and me on drums. He had very clear talent even back then (the seventies). The last time I saw him must have been early 80's in San Francisco. He had just bought the Mac and was amazed at how the mouse worked - I remember how excited he was about it. I'm sorry I never got to see or talk to him again, but I'll always remember him fondly.

What an enormous loss. Just learned of this sad news. I'm new to the world of digital imaginmg and picked up one of Bruce's books so I could better understand colour management. He was one who could actually explain the subject. I even fired off few e-mails for a little extra help and, to my delight, he replied with clear and concise advice. My sincere sympathy to his family, close friends and colleagues.

I loved working with Bruce because he had a fine mind, was a scientist by nature, if not by training, and was as excited as I was about taking on the challenges and trying to find where the holes were. Sterling, perhaps correctly, makes gentle fun of the book Bruce and Rudy and I did together, "Using Color Management Systems for Pushbutton Color." But remember, that was in 1993, when no one had a clue about what desktop color was capable of, and Bruce put a huge amount of work into devising the best tests he could to figure out just what these new-fangled systems could produce. I financed the effort, none of us made a sous, but by these efforts does an industry (slowly) move forward. Rudy then wrote (Steve Hannaford edited, and I published) a more scientific guide to color management, and that was even better received, staying in print for a number of years.
Anyway, this is about Bruce. He was a great gentleman, and a gentle man, a true professional, an invaluable member of our profession. I think that he lived as he wanted to live, as was prepared to accept the consequences. Hence a brave man.
He was above all a lovely human being, with a gentle, funny and loving manner, and I will miss him a great deal.

This is the first time I have ever responded to a blog, and there is certainly nothing more I can add to what has already been said here. Nonetheless I feel the need to say goodbye to Bruce and to once again thank him for all of his fine work, in which he keenly combined amazing technical insight, true concern for the success of other professionals, as well as the best scribing abilities in the world of educational photography writing. Not only did Bruce solve many of my digital photography dilemmas, but he inspired me as a writer.
Although I didn’t really know Bruce, I have never promoted another photography professional with as much gusto. It was simply that the positive impact that Bruce’s work had in my life compelled me to share his teachings with as many people as possible.
My last email to Bruce in the beginning of December was entitled "Fraser Evangelist," and in it I proposed to Bruce that I write a profile piece on him for a national magazine that usually profiles flashier names in the world of photography, reckoning that Bruce deserves as much attention as any other photographer out there. Bruce took the time to respond and mentioned his fight with cancer, but I had no idea how sick he was. I have been traveling and only found about Bruce’s death today. I feel a sincere sadness for the loss of this impressive man, and I wish the best for Bruce’s family and his many close friends during this hard time.

Sad is an understatement. Others have expressed very eloquently the qualities of a fine man & mind. I can easily second those comments. While I have not spoken to Bruce in about three years, I always looked forward to many more conversations (along with a dram or two).

As per Dan Margulis's comments; I did have the pleasure of once surprising Bruce, and we almost wrote a book about it with our mutual friend Sam Merrill (the idea that is, not his expression while crossing a SF intersection).

He will be alive in my memories for a very long time. To those he held dear, I cannot express enough my most sincere condolences.
