We found that Photoshop CS2 and CS3 double color manages to some Epson printers causing a magenta or green color cast, even if the printer color management is turned off. Letting the printer manage colors works well as a workaround for CS2. For CS3 the 10.0.1 update resolves this problem.
It is great that you never experienced the color cast problem when having Photoshop manage the color. But many of our users do run into this, and it is for those users we wrote the tech doc.
