Edward Tufte shouldn't be left out of the information design lineup...

Though I found his one-day class a little lacking, the information and references are pretty solid. Note that he is not interested in usability - just making information displays as dense as possible, but still useful.

[Oh, don't worry--Tufte gets more than his fair share of love on these here internets. I saw that guy in New York years ago and came away unimpressed. --J.]
